New XBL Update Killing Older Consoles

Well, SW here's the news that hasn't made it's round here yet (from my scanning of the SW pages)...

New 360 Update incompatible with some models.

The plus side is that you may get a free Xbox Slim for your troubles...

"Microsoft has confirmed that some Xbox 360 consoles weren't happy with a recent firmware update upcoming, mandatory firmware update. The console manufacturer will replace consoles that have become unable to read retail game discs with a new Xbox 360 S with 250 GB hard drive.

"Following a recent update to our system software, we have become aware of an issue that is preventing a very small number of Xbox 360 owners from playing retail game discs," a Microsoft statement reads. "This issue manifests itself a as a unique 'disc unreadable' or 'disc unsupported' error on the screen and is unrelated to our recent public beta (alteration from original Eurogamer statement).

We are also able to detect this issue over Xbox Live and are proactively reaching out to customers that may be impacted to replace their console."The firmware update implements new anti-piracy measures (along with a 1GB bump in disc storage capacity) that apparently don't play nice with certain DVE drives. Given that the Xbox 360 has had several revisions to its guts over the years, this is the reason why only certain models will be affected.We've contacted Microsoft to find out what North American consumers should do if their console is incompatible with the update. European consumers have been told to go to Microsoft's general support page."

It seems a New 360 may be the solution for a lot of you gamers out there. :P

Yeah, a pending update that's in beta. Which they have to fix problems like these.

Right now, it's in Beta...but it will roll out to everyone at some point. I believe this particular problem being talked about though, is for the older update. So, it seems it takes time before some news breaks...

Maybe, I don't know. If that happens, hopefully people here in SW and whereever else contact the manufacturer and possibly get a new machine. A bit of a hassle, but them's the breaks with online in our consoles.

I know a lot more than I post, but I'm always multitasking on the PC...let's just say, you were my muse for me actually taking time away from my activities to actually educate SW this time around. Maybe it will help some folks, and that's always good. :P

I have a 20GB white 360, but I think its a Elite model, just.. Well, white & only 20GB without the other little things the elite models have. I've been trying to find a larger, new hard drive in a retail store for it but haven't had much luck so getting a free Slim would be pretty awesome. Just how old does the 360 have to be?

Not related to the new beta The issue is from a previous manditory firmware update.

I wonder when an update will bring some exclusives to the system. Hell it's even losing it's superior multiplat edge it has on PS3, the PS3 versions of games either running better or getting exclusive content. Mean time lems get exclusive DLC for homefront :lol:

Yeah, I'm glad MS is being forthcoming about this issue and is working with users to rectify the issue by giving them a new console and a year's worth of Live for free. That's a heck of a nice gesture if you ask me.

Also for the record, they fixed them for free.

Really my friend has an old 360 and it is running fine. Least it is better than getting a bargin bin game for not been able to play online for almost a month. :Dxhawk27

Nah I still don't have a PS3. :( (Would love one but I barely have time to play one system as it is, stupid life and all its downsides :lol: ) I just view Sony as MS's main competitor (Much like many here in SW, I mean, we want to have a fair fight so we can't include the PC in this) so I just find it funny how MS would actually give you a brand new console while Sony gives you a hug and a "We're sorry" :P
