I have a strong feeling next gen games will focus on having more action/cinematic games more than ever. With much improved graphics and more technical power more than ever, developers have more opportunities to create blockbuster style games. From the PS2/Xbox/Gamecube to PS3/X360, the increase to these type of games significantly heightened.

Oh come on guys. MGS4 was a great game!

....if you happened to purchase the MGS4: Game Edition. ;)

and that is why I'll be getting a Nintendo console. Action and Shooter games tend to be weaker on Nintendo platforms.

Transformers2 was one of the worst movies I've ever seen. And that's saying something.

Not really, yeah sure there will be a focus on this sort of games for big devs, but most of the non mainstream games as well as most Nintendo games won't take that route

i hope not. youd think that with improved hardware developers wouldnt have to resort to such corner cutting, but i suppose that hasnt been the case. still, i think there will be enough holdouts to solid interactivity-driven game design.

If that interaction is minimal, might as well as watch a movie than make it into a game.

It's just like having silent protagonists... There's a sense of control. I also think that's why Bethesda prefers the first person perspective in RPG, despite third person RPG combat offering more flexibility. Plus, most cinematic games have you make decisions, are much longer, and have online multiplayer.

Most of PlayStation 3's exclusives aren't even that cinematic. People just choose to ignore the games that don't fit their argument.

Most of the cinematic games don't have you make decisions, all I can think of is Bioware games and The Witcher 2, and in most cases they are largely superficial. 4. Online multiplayer has something to do with cinematic games as in how?

Many people here will crap on the cinematic games, but in reality they have their place. Does it mean every game needs to be over the top and/or cinematic? no, obviously not. Sometimes I want Mario. SOmetimes I want Uncharted. Sometimes I want Timesplitters. Sometimes I want MGS. Can't we all just get along!? :P

The problem is once people think it's trend, they will only try that and sacrifice some aspects of the predecessors that made them great and make it rather mindless.

1. No, it provides a sense of connectivity. Don't put words into my mouth. 2. It's back to the connectivity. Skyrim's perspective provides a better link between the player and game. 3. I'm sorry that's all you can think of, as there are plenty more. Heavy Rain: The Origami Killer, Final Fantasy XIII-2, and L.A. Noire for starters. 4. Because a lot of cinematic games, like the Uncharted series, Call of Duty series, and Battlefield series, have popular multiplayer features, so putting it on the big screen would be silly. They have to supplement the multiplayer with a campaign.

Most games on consoles and handhelds are not that cinematic. It's a small minority people choose to pay attention to.

Now we aren't even talking about cinematic games and lack of interaction which it is likely to cause. How is lack of interaction (which I said) translates to connectivity (what you said)? And just because a game is cinematic doesn't mean it is automatically getting a multiplayer. Vanquish didn't have one. Just because it's cinematic, it doesn't guarantee a multiplayer, which is mostly tacked-on and rarely anything good or innovative.

I happen to consider cinematic games to be somewhat anti-games. Gaming is about player participation. Cinematics are about the developer removing control from you to give you what THEY want.

A good game with a good story is often confused as a cinematic game.

If this is to do with MGS4, released in 2008, I loved the cutscenes as it's do with the story of the game and relevant to the nature of the game.
ie. You kill a boss, you wanna know whats happening...
MGS5 will have less cutscenes as they're saying.

As someone said, Cinematic game > Grinding game.

Truthfully, am more concerned about funky controllers, motion controls and casual games and use of old hardware for next gen.

Developers just need to learn that linear gameplay and cutscenes do not make cinematic games.

Some of the most cinematic moments I've ever seen in video games were in the Total War series. It's not about pausing the game to show some set piece, it's about how you design the entire game. If you're good, you can make a game as slow and grand as Rome Total War cinematic as all hell.

When developers think cinimiatic they think linear + cutscenes and try to make it as much like a movie as possible. That's not right.

Cinematic done right is when the game itself (while playing) looks cinematic.

Not 9 hours of cutscene in a 12 hour game.

I know what you mean, but I think it works for some games. I don't know if you are targeting Uncharted or MGS, but both are amazing games in all aspects. MGS4 especially is an awesome game. I can understand if someone does not like it or its scenes, but there is no denying it has a lot of awesome gameplay and scenes and so on.

Games like Uncharted? Yes.

Games like Heavy Rain? No.

I want to play a game, not mash buttons in sequence in order to watch a movie.
