The recent article posted by Gamespot mentioning a speculation that the next generation consoles would be around be avaliable at least 2012. Some how I will doubt this theory is true, instead we will hear something from Microsoft around 2010 about their next generation console. The reason is to keep developers happy by giving them more flexability with more advanced hardware.

Still, lets assume neither Microsoft nor Sony were to put a next gen console by 2012. Around late 2010 console hardware will have an increased limitation by offering a weak CPU and small amount of system memory and video memory. While PC gaming hardware will ever increased advancement by offering much larger performing hardware. Does this give an advantage to the PC by causing publishers to make PC exclusive to take advantage of the latest hardware?

possibly. They will probably continue to base games within console limits though. It makes sense. We will still see the odd game PC exclusive though to push PC hardware. Personally i'm not that bothered, the level we are at at he moment is great.

i don't see why. The PC always has that advantage. Even now, you can make a more powerful PC. If developers were that worried about it, the PC would always have a lot more support than it does now

Nope, it'll be the same. With devs like CryTek wanting to see what's possible with the latest hardware.

PC has always had the advantage over consoles in the graphics department. This has not stopped or slowed down sales of consoles in the past though. It is hard to tell this generation though, considering the Xbox 360 and PS3 are becoming dangerously close to being PC-like themselves. It most likely won't hurt the Wii since graphics have never been a Wii selling point since day one, but the 360 and PS3 may need to upgrade early to stay in the game. We'll have to see I guess.

PS2 launched in 2000. PS3 was launched in 2006. That's six years. It's not that much. It just usually averages five. This is just one more.

The longer, the better, in my opinion.

on the flipside of everything you've said TC, theres the problem of increased dev costs to make games.

Devs dont need to be "kept happy" by increasing technical prowess, i think they are much more concerned with making profit, and its becoming increasingly difficult to turn a profit off of games which are at an all time high of development costs. notice what a lot of developers have done. they have made cheap, mediocre games on wii to turn profits to fund the development of their bigger franchises. Konami has done it, ubi has done it, EA, etc etc. devs dont need constantly increasing hardward performance to be happy, what they need to money and game sales.

Plus, dev cycles on good games are also increasing.

This is why i believe over the next few years true exclusives will be a thing of the past. The only exclusives we will see are the ones from small devs, like Sins. Timed and added content exclusives will be the norm instead. Imo.

It depends really. If Nintendo, MS, and Sony decide to make their hardware drastically different to program for next-gen, we could see more exclusives. Maybe it won't be like that though? Who knows.

Next question

Lets say there is no console or PC exclusives. Instead you will have a publisher set up two teams, as console team and a pc team that work on a game on both platforms. The PC get much higher treatment by giving us higher resolution, graphics, and maybe a slightly different version by giving us bigger levels and more NPCs.

Could this be more probable?

Well it depends on how you look at it. Longer time on the market = longer time to unlock a console and optimize games for it. Looking at PS2 games from 2001 who would have thought we'd see something like GoWII in 2007?

Only for a select few, big name publishers. It actually aleady happened with Mass Effect. Overall it's much much cheaper just to make a game for one system, and port it to the other (this case PC being ported to).

yes. Look at farcry 2. It could well make PC lead platform on many games in the future.

PCs will always have the hardware advantage. This is not the arguable point. The question with PCs versus consoles is the software. I think that PCs will lose game sales (I know WOW is gernerating a load of money). I believe that companies are tired of the piracy activity online with PC gaming.

Maybe they will find a way to generate more sales with less pirated activity. The next step for the pc will probaley be digital distribution since that can be control a little better. This will pull up the sales when they begin to slump I don't think that a longer console span is any indication of a pc advantage. Look at the ps2, its still selling consoles with strong numbers. This will repeat itself when these consoles age.

one thing that annoyed me about the PS2 sales is just how many of those were re purchased. I went through 4 PS2's over its lifespan. I know guys who are on their second 360 already.

Yeah but by 2012 the PC still won't have the games I like, so..................

The majority of games that interest me are available on console as well, majority are better played on console, or have been on console then released on PC a year afterwards. I don't like RTS's and RPG's neither.

Of course, look at 2004. The PC had doom 3, half life 2, far cry. It will be the same for PC in 2010.

PC always has the advantage in terms of hardware, games, control, everything. You need only look at titles like Crysis to see this.
