"I'm not that interested in technology or the next generation of consoles," he said. "If we could continue with PlayStation 3 for another five years it would be fine with me."

Cage went on to explain that the main limitation is not in hardware (he says he's not yet found something the PS3 can't power), but rather a lack of creativity on the part of developers.

"As an industry we have pretty much have been building the same games for 50 years, despite the platforms changing," he said.

When the next generation of consoles do arrive Cage expects them to have typical trappings of updated technology.

"What do I expect from the next generation of hardware? You know, the usual," he said. "More polys, and higher resolution texture maps, and, horsepower, and, stuff. Wow. It's so cool and exciting."

Cage also sounded off on the present market. He said the industry is oversupplied with first-person shooters and role-playing games, and is too tilted towards violence.

"The industry is too far balanced towards kids and teenagers. It's too focused on violence," he said. "There should be games for all ages, all tastes. Whatever is possible with interactive entertainment should be explored, and I don't think we're seeing that right now."

Part of me agrees with this. Some developers like more power, some don't care. If you, as a gamer, want extra power? You can easily get a PC. No need to wait for big brother to sell you one. The more the PC divides itself in power to consoles, the better for both platforms, imo. More exclusive-centric industry and less multi-platform held hostage by the lowest common denominator

I agree with him , new Consoles aren't really needed yet, plenty of great games coming out still.

2017 is too long to wait, though.

Sales are falling from the sky. People want something new and are getting their fixes from elsewhere. The Wii U is going to be new competition for the Xbox 360/PS3, it will be seen as the newest console and it will easily make them irrelevant. It is too late Heavy Rain people, next-gen has started.

It doesn't really matter what game developers think, they aren't the ones who drive the industry. The consumer does that, and whenever the next gen of consoles hits the consumers will buy them up.

I guess it's not needed if you make linear, on-rails games with zero interactivity.

Of course, that's to be expected from PS3 since there's a massive amount of potential and power in the PS3. Did you notice how visuals improved from Uncharted 2 to the 3rd one. It just keeps getting better. So there's plenty of power left in the PS3.

The Xbox 360 is pretty much done and is ready for the next generation.

Well, look at this. U3 looks noticeably better than U2, so that indicates Naughty Dog probably have said it too early.

Oh don't worry they'll say something like "We were able to draw upon 25% more power with Last of Us on the PS3. Now the PS3 has been maxed...until our next game....." DERP.

The thing is, a lot of people don't seem to realise that more power means so much more than better graphics. The sandbox genre, for example, still has a lot of potential, but it's being held back by technical limitations, at least on consoles (for example the cell loading in Far Cry 2). More freedom, more in-game memory, more destructability and more on-screen units can make for a better, more authentic experience. And in this respect, the next gen needs to arrive right now.

The PS3 was released in the UK in 2007, so that's exactly 10 years.

If there's a large amount of undiscovered power and potential left in the PS3, then it would make sense to continue the console until 2017. The PS3 has Blu-ray and a powerful CELL processor so it should suffice for a few more years, in my opinion. I know that limited amount of memory in the PS3 is a problem, we just have to wait and see. But still, all PS3 exclusives are absolutely outstanding that are above all other consoles and they seem to be getting better graphically.

I don't want a new console for gimmicks like the Wii and Wii-U... Just focus on the power.

And in America it came in November 2006 so it would be beyond 10 years for this country.D=

New console releases have always had a reboot effect on the industry..hype levels go up , fanboys evangelise, word of mouth spreads and the whole industry gets rejuvenated...I think MS may be more willing to jump into the fray as Sony may be having second thoughts about their ability to enter a new war...In any case we are due if not overdue...Bring it on...my evangelical fervour is needing to be let out...Hallelujah!!!!!

I agree with him. I'd rather play games with sh*te graphics but fun gameplay than vice-versa. Altho the "next-gen" is already here, so to speak (3DS, Vita, Wii U, ect.).

That's a bunch of bullsh!t and he knows it. People still can't seem to grasp the concept that better hardware doesn't mean just better graphics. We need new hardware to allow developers to do more stuff with gameplay. People complain about the lack of innovation, well part of that is due to a lack of better hardware to allow more complex gameplay scenarios. There's a reason why we've had the five year cycle since the SNES.
