tl;dr version: generation 7 was not as good as generation 6, and generation 8 will be worse than generation 7

Generation 7 was home to some great games and great technology, but unfortunately it fell short of the expectations laid down by Generation 6. When one looks back on the best modern classics of the last 13 years, most of them released on the PS2, Xbox, and Gamecube. Most of the tops sellers in Gen 7 have been good games that fall very squarely into pre-defined genres, and while they have in many ways taken the medium to new hights, it's also brought about some brand new lows-- games that sacrifice single player for the sake of a mediocre online mode, rampant DLC abuse, horrendous abuse of QTEs in place of true interactivity, and more focus on commercial tie ins with bad pop music and junk food that stains your teeth orange. And what's more, I expect a lot of people will be disappointed when they see next generation's games, and they are only marginally better than what current console games look like due to escalating development and manufacturing costs.

Here is what next gen is shaping up to be:

Microsoft is going to charge even more for Xbox Live, and they are moving away from exclusives to focus on early access to DLC. They are also abandoning the core gamer because they see Kinect as being a more profitable venture, while pushing the Xbox 360 as a set-top-box as opposed to a game machine.

Sony is in a dire financial situation, and this will likely end up hurting the PS4. From the sounds of it there will be no backwards compatibility with PS3 games, and if there is, expect it to be limited. Like Microsoft, they are pushing their consoles more and more towards being set top boxes, and while that is fine and dandy, it should not come at the cost of making your system be for gamers. I expect Sony's system to play things very "safe" this time, and that means it will be less innovative as the PS2 or PS3. They do not have an ace in the hole for the PS4 like they did with the PS2's DVD player or the PS3's Blu-Ray player.

Nintendo tried to cash in on the popularity of Wii by making lighting strike twice, but the problem is that Wii is not popular anymore, despite having sold millions. Releasing the Wii U is akin to Tay Zonday releasing more songs after Chocolate Rain: people loved Chocolate Rain because of the novelty-- some people passed it around because it was "ironic," while other people actually found it strangely catchy. However, no-one gave a crap about Tay Zonday's second song, because everyone had already moved on by then. The Wii U is basically the same thing as the Wii except several years later: no graphical imporvement over the current generation of systems, and it is using a gimmicky new controller to get you to play the same games as last time.

The 8th generation of consoles is not going to sweep in and take us back to the good old days, because the good old days are not coming back. This generation has dragged on for so long that it may have actually caused damage to the industry that we are only starting to understand. The console market has basically been segmented into the two CoD boxes plagued by DLC and online passes, and then there's the shiny white toy for little Jimmy. A lot of people who don't like those options are finding games in other places, like smart phones, tablets, and computers. This trend is growing, not shrinking, and that could mean that next gen could be the worst one since the 1980s crash.

That's your opinion and the fact that it's coming from a Hermit pretty much makes it a mute point. Consoles aren't going anywhere anytime soon. Also PC gaming did in fact SHRINK in 2012 and that included DD as well.

Some people will never be happy because today is not like the "good old days." Whatever that means. Things change, and Nintendo cannot unmake the Wii and WiiU.

TL;DR, but I highly doubt it.

Back when I had a 2600 I would only play it if I was extremely bored. The WiiU alone has already brought me more enjoyment than the 2600 and I dont even own one yet.

I personally thought this gen was better last although I switched from a casual mostly nintendo gamer to a hardcore pc gamer played several times more games this gen then I did the last 2 combined (steam sales and cheap pc games in general). I'm expecting that the next gen will be even better especially for a primarily pc gamer it'll be the first two gens I can really compare as while obviously impossible to play all the games that came out but I'll have played enough to get a solid guauge of how good the gen was at least for pc gamer don't really play much console exclusive games.

Lol no it did not...Console gaming shrank by around 12% yet Pc gaming has been growing year on year (about 15% in 2012)for a while now and Digital Distribution has yet to show signs of shrinking steam alone has been growing by 100% every year for the last few years...where exactly did you get your facts from?

one example of many news articles (March 2012)-http://www.gamernode.com/new-report-shows-pc-gaming-isnt-shrinking-but-growing/

People that say such things are totally biased, they simply express their nostalgy of old memories when they were younger and used to enjoy gaming to a different level. This is totally absurd to say that todays gaming is not of top quality. Just compare games of today with games of the past and you can see how wrong the assumption is.

You simply saying that games and their franchises like the following are not good:
Alan Wake, Witcher, Mass Effect, Assasin's Creed, Halo, Uncharted, God of War, L.A Noire, Red Dead Redemption, Dishonoured, Crysis, Far Cry, Risen, Gears of War, Heavy Rain, Bayonetta, Portal, Team Fortress, Zelda, Bioshock, Dead Space, Fallout, The Darkness, Xenoblade, Lost Odyssey, Dark Souls, Skyrim, Oblivion... and many many more are not good? That is so wrong... (I know some of the games that I listed are sequels of previous gens but still you can judge the ones that have made it into 7th gen)

OP totally wrong, thinking of past won't make you view clearly the current gen games. I am also pretty sure that 8th gen won't disappoint us, games like Watchdogs, Starwars 1313 and the Last of Us are pretty promising.

What you can argue over is that gaming nowadays become much more expensive than previous gen, and I bet 8th gen will be even more expensive for both (devs and gamers). Still that doesn't mean that there were not good games.

From the way things are going, I've just about given up on the gaming industry. I'm pretty sure I'm going 100% retro after this generation comes to a close. I can't afford to keep up with all these extra costs companies are trying to sneak in. (Online-passes, DLC, online subscriptions, etc)

I also HATE motion control, it's a stupid gimmick and it seems these companies are trying so hard to push it.

There's too much corruption in the gaming industry because these people know gaming has become such a huge money-maker and they're trying to exploit it any way they can. (Day-one, ON DISC dlc is a load of bullsh*t. If I paid $60 for that disc, I better fvcking be able to access all the content on that disc. I freaking paid for it.)

I've also noticed that the most successful games are painfully linear and streamlined, and I don't think this trend will come to and end any time soon. People are easily amused by cinematic explosions and camera angles.

The last generation was a lot better. That was when game developers had class and they'd released their games finished without the need to patch them later or release dlc.

Considering in addition to the "Big 3" we're looking to have 8th Gen console offerings in the form of Ouya, GameStick, Steam Box, NVidia Shield, Esfere, Razer Edge and so on, I'm inclined to think this is going to be a hardware generation unlike any we've seen before.

I think people are way too nostalgic about last gen. I think this gen is the best it's ever been and it will only get better.

And it's not just better graphics. Physics, ai and the bigger RAM have contributed to much better gameplay.

I dont agree with any of this. I say this gen is way better than last gen.

Do you realize that some of the best looking games this gen had relatively small budgets? Witcher 2 maxed on pc looks incredible and next gen consoles will be able to handle that level of graphics with ease. I would guess that the average game next gen will look at least a little better than Witcher 2 maxed plus dx11 effects on top. This will be mind blowing to those who dont have gaming rigs. Also expect larger gameworlds. BF 4 on next gen consoels will have big maps just like pc.

Funny you bring up dlc and online passes yet you ignore the fact that the average game this gen comes with more content out of the box than last gen. Look at Cod 1, short sp and limited mp modes. Now Cod comes out of the box with sp, tons of mp modes, zombie mode, bot modes, spec ops, survival. GTA has mp now. Many games have coop modes. Battlefield added sp. I could go on and on about how the average game gives you more for your money than ever before.

Hard to tell how well optimized most games are these days. Graphics havent improved much in the past 5 years but the hardware has.

Graphics HAVE improved, Now read this:

Take a look at the games released in 2008 to 2010 now tell me how many games were developed individually?
Mirror's Edge?
Far Cry 2?
Any other?

Now tell me the list of games that were horrible console ports

RE4
DMC4
GTAIV
SR2
AC2
GR Series was ruined on pc but i don't know which one started it

And the list goes on....

And tell me how many Horrible Console Ports are there ranging from 2011 to 2013?
Crysis 2?
Dark Souls?
Any other?

And the list of wonderful PC games with fidelity (With and without Console Ports, Remember NOT ALL console ports are bad)
BF3
Sleeping Dogs
SR3

I've played more console games this generation than any other. So for me the 7th generation was quite good.

When one looks back on the best modern classics of the last 13 years, most of them released on the PS2, Xbox, and Gamecube. Timstuff
Nostalgia. Give it several years and all of a sudden when people look back at classics there will be plenty of Wii, PS3, and 360 games in there too.

The Atari 2600 gen was when gaming was still in it's infancy so I don't think we can just dismiss it as "terrible".

The A2600 was a product of it's time and at the time, it was cool as it was the first video game system for many. (8-bit home computers like Spectrum ZX and Commodore 64 were popular too)

If you wanted to see "cutting-edge" games and graphics in those times, you had to go to the arcade.

I would say the NES made a small revolution when it came out as it re-ignited interest in console gaming, but still there was room for improvement as the 16-bit consoles have shown and also 16-bit home computers like Amiga and the arcades.

The most interesting times for gaming were, imo, the 90s, as we have seen a fierce battle between the 16-bit systems (SNES vs Genesis), the downfall of Amiga and rise of the PC and the jump to 3D graphics and 3D capable consoles (Saturn, PSX, N64) and graphics cards for PC (3dfx Voodoo, Nvidia Riva TNT, ATi Rage 3D) which got some of the best games of all times.

But still, there was room for improvement as the "128-bit" consoles (Dreamcast, PS2, GC, Xbox) have shown as well as better PC hardware. (Nvidia GeForce, ATi Radeon) and eventually the current-gen consoles (360, PS3, WiiU) and PC hardware.

Most gamers who were growing-up in the 90s may have the most fond memories of those times but that doesn't mean there was no evolution going on.

If that evolution was favorable or not is another question.
