Hmm, earlier when it was said Mini wouldn't have a disc-drive I thought that meant it would be download only. Didn't know that ya could use the Nextbox disc drive for it if ya got em hooked together. microsoft wants you to buy whatever console you like.  The xbox mini is a stand alone device.  You don't have to get it.  It is not an attachment.

It's kind of an attachment since in the diagram I saw it can use Nextbox's disc drive. But it's not something that somebody needs to buy. Just if they want to.

it can work hand in hand with the durango but it is a stand alone device.  There will be people who just buy the xbox mini only to use as a streaming device for their tv like a roku or boxee.  That is what the xbox mini main function will be.  Its going after the google tv market.  The secondary function is that it will also allow you to play 360 games on your durango.  So people who want to play 360 games on their durango can also get it.  Or they could just stick with their xbox.  They don't have to get it.  Me I will get it but not to play 360 games but to get a bad ass streaming device for my other tv to replace my roku.  People on here tend to think only as gamers and don't even realize what microsoft is doing.  They are going after more than just gamers.  If they execute this right they will blow both Sony and Nintendo away in terms of profits.  Think about.  There could be millions of people with xbox minis watching movies, playing music, buying games.  Then millions with durangos for playing core games and then even people with BOTH.  All under the XBL ecosystem spending money on things like movies, games, music, and apps.  It could be a HUGE success.  Its an ambitious plan but it makes so much sense when you think about it.  Probably why Microsoft stock shot up this week.

I'm fine with all the media stuff MS wants to do so long as the hardware doesn't suck. They can do media this and media that and it ain't gonna tempt me nor turn me away but if it comes at the expense of what could/should have been powerful hardware then I'll look elsewhere. That graphics chip that is rumored to be in it just doesn't cut it. They need to improve that.

If the 720 managed to cut its cost by not offering backwards capability but offers a peripheral that gives people the option of pay the cost of it to get it then that sounds pretty good but if the 720 isn't any cheaper to buy with or without the peripheral built in then thats just MS milking the gaming community. The worst thing is to force gamers to pay for functionality they don't want/need. Anyone keeping their 360 probably couldn't care less if the 720 offers backwards functionality.

  Why the fvck is this idea being attacked when the competitors are not EVEN OFFERING BC options?  I would pay a extra $100 if it meant the next gen console can play the last two gen libraries of games.... Are people still not getting how this works? The Xbox mini is just for the people for whom "Durango" (or what ever it's official name will be) is their first MS console. The mini is their means (an option) to get backwards compatibility if they want to catch up.

For those who already have the 360 they can just buy Durango by itself and play 360 games on their existing 360. Or if you just don't care about previous generation games, Durango will meet that players current gen gaming requirements. The mini is only necessary if you don't already have a 360 or even want BC in the first place.

Too complicated? :| And let's not forget, PS4 doesn't have built in BC either, you need an external service for that.

yeah to be honest i can see alot of people doing that, so if it retails at 149, you probably can trade in your current 360 that is replaced by the 720 for about 90 etc and it will cost you the amount of a current game to incorporate your entire library of 360 games.   Not a bad deal I think...  i will get the xbox mini

That's what I would do. But I don't think it's targeted at people that already have 360 but rather to new customers that might consider getting both. Doesn't seem like a bad idea to me.

I suppose it's a nice gesture towards those that care for BC, but I won't be using my next machine to play current games.

The poor hardware in the 360 will force lemmings to buy the mini when MS drop the 360.

The more likely scenario is that the 720 will offer all of the things the 720 mini will, but will also offer the ability to play retail games (that are more demanding). The 720 mini will be a box that integrates with your cable and offers you the ability to play XBL Arcade games. Having to purchase 2 Xbox's doesn't even make sense. lhughey

i agree.  That is why i said if they do it right.  For that they would have to have a system that appeals to the core gamer.   I'm interested in seeing how this all works out.  But right now it seems like MS is thinking a couple of steps ahead of Sony as always.
