For those who have played a few current gen games, do you ever get the feeling that some of the games you play have nice graphics... and nothing else remotely interesting?

I'll use Resistance as an example. The game visually looks really nice. The graphics are great and the environments are detailed. But everytime I played it all I could think about was how dull the gameplay is and how generic the whole game felt.

I only did a few levels (I genuinely couldn't be bothered playing any more) but they were all so similar and boring... but hey, the game had nice graphics!

I also had exactly the same feeling when I played the following current gen games... the following is allin my opinion: Bioshock, Mass Effect, Oblivion, Heavenly Sword, Timeshift, Perfect Dark Zero, Assassin's Creed... that's about it I think. So, not a lot of games but still quite a few, and many were highly praised by reviewers.

Anyone else ever get the feeling of "nice graphics, boring game"?

This thread isn't an attempt to praise the Wii or anything. I just think too much focus has been put on graphics for a lot of the games this gen (eg. Lair) and it isn't necessarily needed to make a standout game. I mean, look at what won GOTY 2007 in most places.

What do you guys think? Agree/Disagree?

Hmm....don't own any games that have that problem. The closest would probably be Gears of War. But I do own Assassin's Creed, and I think it's a fantastic game. Well, it's not even a game. The closest I can call it is an 'experience', no joke.

It all depends on your tastes, expectations, and mood. I do admit that I feel the same way about some games such as Timeshift and PD0. Though I'll admit that I'm also disappointed when games look like a smelly dog turd for no reason as well, no matter how they play.

Those games you selected happened to be good looking and fun.

If you had picked something like Lair and Bomberman then you would have been fine.

Definately....all these "great" games have been average to me at best

My favorite game of this gen has been Rainbow Six Vegas... and the graphics in that game are terrible.....it just seems like they focused on gameplay first, then went foward with graphics and all of that, which is why the game is so good..

Games like Bioshock, Mass Effect, Oblivion, Halo 3 all supposed really good games...have been terrible to me...

Actually my favorite game ive played since this gen started is Indigo Prophecy which is a really old game....games need to try to do something new like that game rather than just add really good graphics and the same boring gameplay weve seen for years now....

You just described my expereince with nearly every "big" game of this generation.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, the Year 2000 was the end of Gamings Goldenage (IMO).

Total matter of personal preference. I've only played a few of those games and they're fun. Graphics are a nice bonus though.

Mass Effect is more gameplay than graphics. (it's graphics aren't that good neither).

There has been games in the past that are more graphics than gameplay, but not all games are like that.

I haven't played Mass Effect or Assasin's Creed..yet. But, every game doesn't have to be action packed to be enjoyable. There are other ways a game draws gamers into it. Ya, know...immersion?

Thought that would be asked... I've enjoyed a lot but keep in mind I'm still pretty new to this gen:

Gears, Halo, Forza, both PGRs, Uncharted, both GRAWs, R6 Vegas, Burnout, Guitar Hero... a few more I think that I can't remember right now.

The graphics were nice! Not like Gears or Bioshock nice, but still pretty good, and R6 is definitely one of the most overlooked titles of last year. Very fun.

For single player the graphics were pretty good, but for the online part they are drasically lowered, it looks a regular xbox game with a few things thrown in that look up to 360 quality.

But yeah, R6 was a really really good game. Too bad a lot of multiplatform games can't be considered great on this board because you cant use them to "own" anybody

I see, well, im completely new to this gen. i have a 360 with 4 games and so far, i pfinished and loved CoD4, and im playing and loving AC (which just froze on me tonight, i almost cried). still got halo 3 and mass effect to run through.

so from my very limited experience, im not getting the same vibe as you. different strokes different folks methinks.

For sure. I'm not saying graphics mean nothing, I just think a bit too much focus is being put on them. i mean, look at Burnout Paradise and GTAIV. The graphics aren't superb, but I'm willing to bet both games will be 2 of the best games of 2008.

Games like Halo 3, Perfect Dark Zero, Ratchet and clank and Oblivion have all has this I´ve played this before feeling.

The only system I've enjoyed fully this gen is my ds.

I definitely have. When I first played Halo: CE and even Halo 2, I got past the amazing visuals and realized the gameplay here was stale, boring, and repetitive. The same can be said for Halo 3, as well. Online is fun, though.

EDIT: I just have to take this time to praise Galaxy on the Wii... I played it at a friend's house, and while my Wii hasn't arrived yet (I had to place a rain check to nag one), Galaxy is ridiculously fun. The graphics look quite amazing and polished, but they aren't on par with 360 games, but that's ok; the gameplay alone makes up for it. More 360 and PS3 games need to be like this!

Assassin's Creed, yes....Resistance, Bioshock, Oblivion, no.....

Even though I didn't like Oblivion.

Your comment about Resistance being very "bleh" gameplay is total BS. I've literally gone through the story mode 3 times already. You don't appear to understand the appeal behind the game.....you pick up interesting weapons and battle increasingly more interesting enemies. I've found that the combat was extremely varied.

Let me take one instance as an example (you seriously know nothing about this game if you haven't completed it at least once....and the second time is MUCH better): I walked into a room, threw down a feedback grenade, stepped in the bubble, whipped out my shotgun, blasted some Chimera off the walls, tossed a hedgehog grenade, whipped out my Hailstorm, shot an autonomous magazine with 50 rounds flying around the room, and surveyed the carnage with much satisfaction.

This game was pure win. You aren't exactly credible enough to speak on it, seeing as you've played it for fifteen minutes and given up. Two assault rifles don't constitute the pantheon of incredible this game has going for it, I promise you that.

"You don't appear to understand the appeal behind the game." You're exactly right, I don't. It just isn't my type of game. I wasn't asking people to agree with me on that, I was just asking if people have felt that way ("nice graphics, boring game") about any games they've played this gen.

But on Resistance... I played the game for much longer than 15 min, don't make assumptions, and I'm not gonna force myself to play a game I don't like.

I agree with you. A lot of the games you mentioned seemed to have not innovated a lot but feel generic -- i disagree with assassins creed though, sort of. I mean it did add a lot of things that were new but the plot and repetativeness brought it down from AAA status for me.

i truly think that developers should not worry about the graphics, but instead upgrade things that will improve the experience for gamers.. like Physics, AI, Loading Times, Frame Rate issues, story telling, etc.

No actually I think the games with the best graphics this year (Crysis, Uncharted, R&C) were some of the best games period. Heavenly Sword is the only exception I can think of off the top of my head

Well, last-gen's games still take a dump over most of the titles made this gen. I feel as a whole, the games aren't nearly as fun or thought out which is why I find myself playing MUCH more PS2/Xbox/Cube than anything on the current systems.

That's what I feel too. I think with the high next gen costs, devs are going with what they know sells, so they aren't really trying to do anything drastically new, and it shows in the gameplay. Imo, anyway.

Bioshock for me was just kinda decent, not bad, not good

Crysis looked really good, and using the stealth nano suit power was fun, but I got passed the graphics and I got bored of the game quickly.

Lost Planet for me was also meh, The boss battles were awesome, but i just couldn't get into it.

Two assault rifles don't constitute the pantheon of incredible this game has going for it, I promise you that.

the-very-best

lol, my opinion is BS. Thanks. :)

Let me rephrase that.....your opinion is almost totally without any credibility.

The game is significantly more enjoyable on the second play through and the latter half of the first playthrough, and I'll leave it at that.

Couldn't disagree more with Assassin's Creed, Oblivion, Mass Effect, and Bioshock. Great games all around, not just visual pieces.

The-very-best did you notice that al the games you listed were either on the 360 or ps3 ?

I think both platforms are going to have a hard time keeping there customers happy with there games because of the lack of innovation (or gimmick) they put into there controller. Espcially the 360. The wii dosent have that problem I found because nintendo and other dev's have found new ways of keeping the gamers entertained with OK graphics and fun gameplay.

Wii spots is a great example with it's simplitic graphics yet addictive gameplay.

That fact that he's remarking solely on games with good graphics but "boring" gameplay pretty much takes wii out of the discussion, simply for the fact that very few of its games have good graphics for todays standards.

thats why there arent any wii games. if he was talking about all around boring games, im sure there would be wii games there.

Ironically, I haven't played Wii Sports since shortly after the launch. Guess I'm not that type of gamer.
