Great games don't always hop over tastes or likes.

[QUOTE="Gh0st_Of_0nyx"]That fact that he's remarking solely on games with good graphics but "boring" gameplay pretty much takes wii out of the discussion, simply for the fact that very few of its games have good graphics for todays standards.The-very-best did you notice that al the games you listed were either on the 360 or ps3 ?
I think both platforms are going to have a hard time keeping there customers happy with there games because of the lack of innovation (or gimmick) they put into there controller. Espcially the 360. The wii dosent have that problem I found because nintendo and other dev's have found new ways of keeping the gamers entertained with OK graphics and fun gameplay.
Wii spots is a great example with it's simplitic graphics yet addictive gameplay.
JPOBS
thats why there arent any wii games. if he was talking about all around boring games, im sure there would be wii games there.
There are wii games with "good" graphics by today standards like MP: 3 and SMG or Super paper mario and SSX and I havent seen any threads on how boring they get but are nice eye candy to look at. I tend to agree with The TC on alot of those games I think its just they way I see gameing on the 360 as being very stale and not much fun anymore. Dont get me wrong playing halo 3 is still fun but it dosent have the same spark it did in the beginning. Mass effect is another game Im very close to beating it but when Im finished im not going to play it again :( I replayed KOTOR 1&2 countless times but idk with this one I just wana get it over with and get my achievments :?[QUOTE="Gh0st_Of_0nyx"] There are wii games with "good" graphics by today standards like MP: 3 and SMG or Super paper mario and SSX

While I flat out disagree with you on the subject of Mass Effect, Oblivionand Bioshock, there have been a few games I've played that fit in well here and the first that pops into my head is GT5: Prologue. Keep in mind that I've only played the demo since apparenly Sony can't be arsed to release the damn game on US shores.
While I'm going to come off as some kind of rabid fanboy since I love the Forza series so much, I just don't see what's so amazing about GT5: Prologue besides the graphics. The in car view is great, but it's nothing I haven't seen in PGR 3 and 4.I do enjoy the larger 16 car fields but the bumper car physics turn each race into a demolition derby for me as I plow into folks with reckless abandon to maintain high cornering speeds. It's a dirty tactic but hey, it works.
Not to say GT5 isn't good, it's just rather boring next to Forza 2. Here's hoping the full game will wow me in the way the Prologue demo didn't.

Primarily because I only have one friend who owns a Wii, and I haven't really played many games on the system that much. I've played the 360 much more, and I just got myself a PS3 recently so I've had some experience with those games too...
It's not like I don't like games with nice graphics though. I mean, I absolutely love Uncharted and its graphics are part of the reason I do, but the gameplay and story is more of a reason. The games I mentioned just didn't reel me in as I had expected them too, possibly due to how much I expected after reading reviews/reaction from gamers.
I seriously don't get the point of having "good graphics".
Okay so the game is photorealistic.....so what?
Does it change the fact that it plays worse then Fallout, Vagrant Story, or Marvel vs. Capcom?
As long as the game looks eye pleasing to me it's fine.
*Sigh* Shame to see developers waste their time with pointless crap instead of the stuff that really matters.

Well, it seems some developers spend more time on making the games look photorealistic than actual gameplay mechanics these days...and it's a shame,
What we need is a game that's the best of both worlds.
[QUOTE="HAZE-Unit"]I agree, except for Assassins creed, it was a great game, featured new things.
I did asimilar topic about this, but everyone bashed me to hell, lol, maybe I don't put the comfortable words like you do, lol.

lol, do you have a link to it, just so I can see why that is?
Yeah, you gotta tread lightly in the OP or else you'll be bashed like crazy. I thought I would be considering I had the word "boring" in there, guess I got lucky.

I think you were attacked cause you said 2008 looks better than 2007, and while I actually agree with you, 2008 mainly looks significantly better cause of the PS3 games, and there's very few PS3 owners in SW, hence the attacks in that thread.
But I wasn't really comparing years/lineups, was just asking if people felt graphics were being focused on a bit too much this gen.
I don't understand how you can relate those game being boring to you with them having good graphics. I agree with you about finding them boring. I myself found Oblivion, COD4, Bioshock etc. a bit lacking gameplay wise. But I don't think graphics had anything to do with it.froidnite
What I mean is that I found the graphics to be awesome, but felt the devs didn't really do anything spectacular gameplay wise, resulting in a disappointing game, for me at least.

They were dissappointments I agree....What does that have to do with graphics.....Do you expect all disappointments to have crappy graphics?I don't think their gameplay was lacking because developers put too much time concentrating on graphics.....i mean Oblivion sucked to me because it had a very shallow RPG element. I am sure that was decided even before game producion had started. Same goes for Bioshock.
Most games look good this gen because the h/w is very powerful and it's relatively easy and cheap to put forth good graphics. So almost all game this gen will have good graphicas, even the averge ones.

Ya I know, but it is somehow the same opinion about the games we mentioned, that's why I remembered my thread.
Felt that way about Oblivion(marrowind owned it)
Other than that, i liked the other games
Assassins Creed is way to repetitive, but its a solid good game.
Bioshock is a great overall experience
I think COD 4 is overrated because its pretty, both Halo 3 and Crysis IMO were better games overall. But i do like COD 4.
ANd i think Fire EMblem got underrated cause it looks like a piece of crap.
Stronly disagree with your statement... Halo3, timeshift, Gears of War etc... ok... maybe... BUT bioshock? Mass Effect? Assassin's Creed? and i'm sure that you were gonna say COD4 (if u played it)... whoa!!! maybe you should try to focus yourchoice-of-gameson another platform... like the wii... mariogalaxy is said tohave been a great success..oh and btw...maybe it's bcz youarent looking in the same direction like most players... I, for example, look at thestory, yes the graphx and soundquality... but mostly the storyline and the way it unfolds.. gameplay is important only ifit relates suitably with the story...
if gameplayis your main focus on games then you wouldnt like books either... cuz having to turn the page to read the next chapter has gotten old...
how far are you into these said games that you have played? I am just wondering. Some of those games don't really becoming good until you get a quite a few hours into them.DrinkDuff
I was an hour or so into most of them, with the exception of Heavenly Sword and Timeshift. I played PDZ for longer than that and still don't like it, but MP wasn't too bad. I watched people play through most of Bioshock too and still didn't find it interesting, wasn't crap or anything though, just nowhere near as good as hyped to be imo.

United_We_Fall
lol.
Can you explain to me how you came to that conclusion? What does my opinion about those games have to do with reading books?
Gameplay and graphics are both important to me, I don't like either neglected.
You know the people bashing his opinion for focusing on gameplay, why is that wrong.
What is the point of a good story and deep immersive world, if the gameplay sucks.
WE play videogames, no matter what game it is, the majority of your work is playing the game.
IF hes bored by the way Bioshock or Mass Effect play, he isnt gonna get into the story because he'll be bored out of his mind.
Seriousaly its one things for games to try to be artistic, but dont be artistic and not have good gameplay, wont win over many gamers.
He and all of you should honestly put gameplay first and everything else second, third ,etc. but thats just my opinion.jg4xchamp
That's basically the same way I see it. I've got nothing against people who disagree with me though about the games... I knew when I made this topic that the majority would not agree with me, but I thought more people would have had the "nice graphics, boring game" feeling more often... guess not.
I thought this was going to be about Crysis when I saw the title.
I don't agree with Oblivion being in there though that's one of the greatest games of all time. I still go back to it even now.
Both PD0 and Resistance are very dull games. As is Mass Effect - one of the most boring games of 2007 (I know I'm in the minority there). I'm not sure about Bioshock - nice graphics but I don't like all the variables in the game play.
Assasin's Creed could have been so much better if they'd not ruined the immersion by dragging you off to the furture all the time. + by varying the gameplay a bit as you progpressed through it. it had the nuts and bolts of a great game apart from that.

Neh, even the music and sound is important the graphics IMO.
This generation is a bit messed up, Nintendo were right that controls needed to evolve but it needed a leap in power which they apparently cba do bother with :|. I would not go as far as to use the word boring about 360/ps3 games, but they don't seem to be breaking last gens moulds.
Lets hope GTA mixes things up a little more than just a graphical update (Im hoping a LOT to explore).

SA was huge and R* has promised to cut out the country crap and make the map really detailed, and they always deliver on their promises. The only thing they lie about is scandals (hot coffee) and exclusivity (GTAIII, VC, SA, LCS, VCS - all were said to be exclusive).
GTAIV is gonna be the game to reel in so many casuals from last gen so I think the reaction worldwide is gonna be huge and the gaming community will be very active for the months after its release, similar to what happened with SA.
lol... doesnt sound rite now that i've read what i wrote... what i meant was taht your character -for example in bioshock- is like your hand turning the page ...so even tho it's an fps with the same old-fashioned shoot and run type it doesnt matter a lot... what matters ishow the story unfolds.sounds kinda stupid i know but i was goingto a public school.. :P

I think you're saying I don't enjoy Bioshock's story? It's not that though, it's just the gameplay that bored me. The game had really nice graphics and a great atmosphere but I just wasn't into the gameplay itself, so the game overall wasn't that interesting for me.

what's the last game u've enjoyed most for its gameplay?Uncharted was the single most boring game i have played, the tedious all same battles were just horrible
Then comes Assassins
As for Mass Effect, i have played 80 hours or more, and still have not got bored any bit
saolin323
Can you name one game with a lot of variety in the battles?
This is actually one of many trends right now.
Repetition- Assassins Creed, Heavenly Sword, and even good old Call of Duty 4
Missed out on certain ambitions- Mass Effect(great game IMO, but lifeless worlds in some cases), Assassins Creed great exploration great change of pace from the typical GTA knock offs, but you made the game repetitive, the combat missed out on its over defensive mechanics, and the AI is also pretty stupid at times. Halo 3 was suppose to have amazing AI, there good but not the best ever, Bungie what happened.
Evolution in gameplay more than innovation- not saying innovation is always needed, but Some games all they do is evolve. DO Halo 3 and MEtroid Prime 3 play great yes, but they didnt exactly change it up, just took what worked and evolved it and perfected it to have less flaws. SUre maybe some new things were added for strategic reasons, but after 3 games, you need to mix it up if u plan on coming back(that means Halo 4 or whatever better have a nice change of pace).
Gamers forcing everything to be art- this is more or less a problem with the gamers on this board and some critics, if the game has a story thats really, really, really good it gets a free pass.Bioshock had everybody ready to call it god, mass effect is beloved, and the same will happen when FF 13, Alan Wake, or MGS 4 come by. Essentially im saying its not wrong to be artistic, but that should not mean games get free passes on flaws and having ok to meh gameplay. P.S. i only used common examples of good stories, and no thats not how i feel about there gameplay completely.
Franchises having too high of expectations- this is more or less for the devs, if you got a franchise IT MUST DELIVER AND THEN SOME. Plain and simple the Next Zelda, Metroid, Haloish game, Half Life, Starcraft, Splinter Cell, Metal Gear, FInal Fantasy, God oF War, whatever have got to hit 9s or better. Not because there any less of good games, if they get 8s, but because when you become a franchise and you have been so successful in the past, to become stale and start to miss a step becomes a negative among consumers, and ultimately that specific game becomes a dissapointment(hence TP for having to live up to the amazing Zelda games of the past)
Thats not a negative, but we are starting to see Devs having a problem topping there past work in some cases.
