Wasn't the original game a hack and slash?

I hope they are actually making an RPG not a standard hack and slash game. Bit too early to tell from the trailers so far but they need to show something other than hectic hack and slash combat personally I am hoping for Nier 2 not Bayonetta 3. Nothing against Bayonetta but I would rather they did the next one off their own backs, a lot of people are looking forward to another Nier game.
The creative dude behind Nier is still on this, same with the composer. He just doesn't have his own team internally at Square, so they always outsource his ideas with collabs with really iffy devs. Why they actually made a wise move this time is sort of beyond me, because I imagine none of his games actually sold enough to warrant this, could just be Platinum's mercenary dev style just gets em enough jobs. Either way I wouldn't be worried about the game being full on Platinum beat-em up. From my understanding, that trailer is indicative of how the original played from a core combat standpoint, just way more fluid. But all the crazier shit Nier had to keep itself varied is still there, don't really have a grasp on how Nier handled its stat based stuff though. There was a solid famtisu translation of all the stuff about this game on gaf, but that shit is buried like 5 pages in.
It's not a million miles off Nier combat just sped up x 20 lol and no signs of magic but like I said it's early days. Nier skill choices and progression wasn't really that deep but the game was full on open exploration, lots of lore and conversation and utterly whacko out there game elements appearing out of nowhere. Basically typical bizarro world Japanese stuff.
I remember the Platinum guy saying he's aware it's an RPG at heart and he wants to keep that so I won't worry too much I just don't think they do themselves any favours with trailers that show nothing but really hectic combat. I'm sure it will all be fine on release (famous last words).

The combat wasn't far off it though it had magic too but there was a lot more to Nier than that. Very weird but very good game.
As much as I would like it to be good, I really have doubt. the first Nier wasn't good and I tend to hate platinum games

Right, I like to think the trailer is a product of its easier to market showing something obvious about the game, and showing off that stuff playing well and looking polished.
I think the larger worry for anyone invested OG Nier is, they are obviously going to make a better playing game, but that original Nier from my understanding is loved on its story. And I would be more worried about that stuff holdings its own in a sequel, because I've tried the Drakengard stuff, and the main character Drakengard 3 is pretty entertaining, that game's sense of humor definitely keeps me invested in spite of the butthole gameplay, but the plot is always a bit disjointed.
Again with no real context for Nier's plot, I would wager that's the bigger question mark. Making a sequel to a video game is whatever, it's reasonably difficult, but there are things you can do better objectively. A plot, story, characters, that stuff is very easy to **** up and misread what your audience liked about the first game. But I get your sentiment.
I can't imagine them skimping on any of the elements that made Nier good, it's just this time the combat and visuals will be will be great as well. And it's 60fps.
This game is a potential masterpiece.
I'm having trouble generating care for it since it's exclusive to a platform I'm never going to buy.
That said, I am also having trouble understanding where they could honestly take the story after the first game.
Looks awesome but Metal gear rising much?
But really Platinum games Games are basically a rehash of their former games in a new skin. I can instantly tell that it's by platinum. They all have similar style and animation too.
You are absolutely right, but this looks better than all of their other games and its on the best hardware exclusively unlike their other games.

lolwut?
Bayonetta plays nothing like Vanquish, which plays nothing like Revengeance which plays nothing like The Wonderful 101. None of them play like Madworld or Anarchy Reigns. Similar engines and animation style sure, rehash wouldn't apply. They make games in the same genre pretty often, I would agree on some level that is disappointing. Given we know some of them have worked on Okami, and other members of the team have had backgrounds working on Maximo, Resident Evil, Megaman stuff, and the like.
But it's the catch 22 for the type of games they want to make, in between they do a bunch of licensed stuff to keep the lights on. But when they do go big, they don't make anything focus tested and compromised.
Yeah, but isn't it going to be a Platinum co-developed hack and slash / beat em up? Is that not a good thing? And wasn't the original game a hack and slash? I don't see a problem here; is there a problem?
Square hasn't made a halfway decent game in years... they are clueless.
This is not being developed by Square Enix, they are just publishing it.

Oh, ok. Well, my comment still stands.. lol.
Who is making the game? Doesn't look like my type of game, but color me a little more interested that Square doesn't have a hand in development. I just don't mesh with that company anymore. I have found next to no enjoyment with their games at all over the last few years... which is sad because they used to be one of the best.

Look into the first game, it's for Ps3 and 360. That was made by Cavia, and the director and composer for the first Nier is working on this sequel, but with Platinum games doing the legwork and combat.
The first game was very atmospheric, with a weird but interesting story and great soundtrack. It's a little rough around the edges but it's become somewhat of a cult classic, for good reasons. Nier Automata looks anything but rough though.
Thank you based Platinum.
For making games for all platforms that everyone will buy said platform for.
