NieR is a good game, imo, but I do think the fans overrate the story. The first half of the game is just going to dungeons, looking for work and a cure for Yonah's sickness. Simple stuff. It isn't until the halfway point that the story gets interesting, but imo, the second half felt rushed; they threw everything at you in a matter of hours, which made some moments not as emotional as they wanted it to.
[spoiler] Freya's death scene didn't have an impact on me, since we didn't see much development of her. She appeared for just a few minutes throughout the game. [/spoiler]
Though, the playthrough for ending B was well-done, imo. As for the quests, I also think they're tedious. They're mostly fetch-quests with no good pay-off, imo. Yeah, you get some witty dialogue between NieR and Weiss, but you see a lot of that in the main campaign.
Loved the soundtrack, characters (Weiss, NieR and Kaine), and boss fights. Everything else is a mix-bag
