Wikipedia says that the game wasn't changed that much (the script was supposedly largely unchanged) for the other protagonist. Looking more at the characters, I thinkt he "original" looks especially terrible, although I'm not entirely fond of the "brother." I think I'd be more okay with it if the "father" looked something like Basch from FFXII, but ... he reminds me of "The Wrestler."
[QUOTE="Master_ShakeXXX"][QUOTE="TheGuardian03"]Its become overrated by the fans, i'm getting it in two days along with Deus Ex, i expect a good story and soundtrack that rival Xenoblade.TheGuardian03
How do you know it's overrated if you haven't even played it yet? And I expect great things from Xenoblade if it's story and soundtrack can even come close to Nier's.
Do you really need to play it to know its overrated ? its underrated by the reviews and overrated by the fans, what more need i say ? can you prove otherwise ? and many threads with fans talking how underrated it is without realising they are giving it too much praise.I'm not overrating it. I enjoyed NIER more than 99% of the games I have played this gen and am giving my honest opinion about it. Maybe you didn't read it, but at the bottom of page two I explained a couple of my reasons for loving it so much. Other reasons include the 3 dimensional characters, witty dialogue, and superb soundtrack.
And yes, you do need to actually experience a game before you can effectively claim if you believe it's underrated or overrated.

It was written as a tale of a boy desperately trying to sustain his sister, to the point of male prostitution according to Grimoire: Nier.
"Father" nier is a result of catering to the western audience and they managed the character exceedingly well.
Bottom line is that you're intent on sacrificing everything for you kin.
That's a simple and blunt way to put it but that's the beauty of the plot. The story is perfectly fine with treading volatile waters without treating controversial topics as if they're...... Well, controversial.
That's an impressive feat in an industry, where edgy plot design constitutes integrating a female portagonist who's a tightasses version of Marcus Phoenix, with breasts.
No offense Gears, such critique applies everywhere.
Edit: The game does in no way feature incest in any shape, form or insinuation :P It does feauture possession complexes.
That's true, the story does handle some of its elements quite well (I just wish the beginning wasn't so slow). My only problem with the characters is Kaine, as her outfit is beyond ridiculous and kind of goes against her (her?) as a character. It's some of the worst design in the entire game.[QUOTE="Filthybastrd"]That's true, the story does handle some of its elements quite well (I just wish the beginning wasn't so slow). It really does. I suppose it's tied into her identity issues but that's probably being too lenient with the designers ;)
I do believe she's intended to be vulgar in a masculine way while promoting her feminine virtues but that does'nt excuse her deisgn.
[QUOTE="SNIPER4321"][QUOTE="shalashaska88"] Apparently a lot of people do. xXShortroundXxJRPGs are for Little Kids and girls who play with barbie doll Cool story Sniper4321. No biased there. I agree with Sniper. *Goes back to playing with barbie doll* :P
Good story in Nier? I don't know about that. The story at its core is good and I could believe that it could be the basis of an expanded universe but it leans a lot on an overly ethereal dream-like quality. A lot of details are confusing and glossed over using this method. People also praise the music but again, it is very sappy and swooning. I don't hate the music and I don't hate the story either. I'll say it's better than average but that doesn't make up for the huge shortcomings in gameplay and overall lack of attention to detail. Such a shame considering the pedigree. I would compare it to another SquareEnix RPG adventure- Final Fantasy Adventure. That game was phenomenal. Neir was good enough a concept to warrant a decent budgetGunSmith1_basic
That's just the way the storytelling is meant to be in the game. You're never much wiser than Nier himself is.
And the game expands on Drakengard, so it's more of a continuation than a basis ;)

I respect your opinion man, i believed you and bought vanquish, didn't disappoint great shooter too bad it was a short game, still one of the best TPS games in years, i'm gonna try Nier and see it for myself :).Glad to hear you enjoyed Vanquish. It's nice to know that some people actually listen to my crazed rantings about how amazing it is and play it for themselves.

Same, expect nobody listens :P Did you beat challenge 6 and plat it? :)[QUOTE="Master_ShakeXXX"][QUOTE="TheGuardian03"] I respect your opinion man, i believed you and bought vanquish, didn't disappoint great shooter too bad it was a short game, still one of the best TPS games in years, i'm gonna try Nier and see it for myself :).DarthJohnova

Same, expect nobody listens :P Did you beat challenge 6 and plat it? :)I beat challenge 6. It was one of the hardest things I have attempted in a game, and it nearly took me a week to beat. I still need to go back and get 2 or3 more trophies for the plat, but I'll have it some day.
NIER was an awful game imo, and one of my least favorite JRPGs this gen. The only thing it had going for it was music.
Give that man a silver dollar, Nier was awesome!Proving graphics don't matter. Excelling in storytelling, characters, music, gameplay, ideas and pretty much everything you can excell in. Nier is gaming excellence. How did this game go about getting so much hate ?
It is much much better than any of the other drab rpgs this gen has mustered up ( excluding Valkyria Chronicles of course :P )
Final Fantasy XIII, Lost Odyssey, Star Ocean 4 and Infinite Undiscovery have nothing on this.
Nier is a underapreciated gem.
Critics have never gotten any review of any game ever, so wrong. Shame critics. Shame !

I saw the game for $9.99 at EB Games today... would've picked it up if my gaming backlog wasn't so freaking huge.
Bought Nier and FF13 roughly a month ago. Nier was amazing, easily one of the best RPGs I've played in a long while, and while FF13 (which I havn't finished yet) is good, it doesn't hold up to Nier's greatness. I was so dissapointed at the end of the game, simply because it ended. It was so fun, and I'm actually semi speed running FF13 so I can do my followup playthroughs of Nier so that I can uncover more about the story. It's definately underrated, but Nier is a perfect example that graphics don't make a game; gameplay and story do.

I believe the game itself addresses the issue by saying that she overemphasized her femininity on purpose to prove to others that she was a woman. It was a little much, but I just accepted it as part of the many oddities of the game's characters. Please Log In to post.
