I am saddened by the negativity on this thread, it is evident that most have not played the original NiGHTS. The game should be glorious. The art style is pleasing, encompassing all the vibracy trademark Sega colour palette, the gameplay looks light, airy and majestic; and the worlds seem imaginative. One thing the footage does highlight is the importance of music in video-games, however on this front I have no fear, Naofumi Hataya- the composer of the delightful score in the original- is working as musical director. I am also intrigued about the use of the Forecast Channel, after all the original was a pioneer of similar features by using the Saturn's internal clock.

Yes the textures are bland and the gameplay seems very similar to the original, but is that really a bad thing? I once read an interview with a Sega employee (possibly Yuji Naka) who said the reason there had not been a sequel to NiGHTS is because they did not want to upset fans by altering it. The game will likely be a fan-service but there are few things you can do with a formula almost perfected on the first outing. For now I remain cautious about the implementation of the Wii controls but overwhelmingly optimistic that the game will pull through unscathed.

Shame on the pessimists of the gaming world, happy to lap-up the generic shooters and racers we are spoon-fed on a regular basis. I think I am now beginning to understand the reason why I feel so disenfranchised by gaming at the moment, and I can assure you it is not the influx of non-gamers.

MrGrimFandango

Now can you point me the way to the FUN in that trailer?

That is dependent on whether you have played the original, if so you will be aware of the subtlety of the NiGHTS experience. It is almost metronomic and soothing; elevating the player to a zen-like state of concentration. Gamers are so cynical and scornful today, we need to return to the child-like fascination and discovery games once brought.

FUN?!?

Folks like yourself are why I feel at a loss with the gaming community, we cannot even have an intelligible discussion about our hobby. Must you reduce everything to the base-level of 'fun'? What do you regard as fun?

Wow... way to make this seem way worse than it is.

It doesn't look that bad. The graphics are pretty terrible, but we haven't heard any in-game music and the quality is pretty terrible. I want to see how it controls.

Panzer_Zwei

It was on rails and most of the movement was only in 2 directions (up and down). It's a glorified 2D platformer.

The Saturn had to fake its 3D graphics because it frankly had limited capabilities. Nothing like Sonic Adventure was possible on the Saturn. Thats why Nights is on rails and looks 3D but is truly 2D with 3D backgrounds.

That's not true, you obviously didn't played Burning Rangers, or seen the Saturn footage of Shenmue.

Wasn't the Saturn a tad more powerful than the Playstation?

Well, it's evident by this thread that a LOT of people never played this game the first time around. That's a shame, because it seems many of you didn't know what to expect and are now disappointed because it's not living up to your expectations.

NiGHTS is a game you have to play to understand.I can't describe it, and you can't just watch it. From the outside it's boring, but once you play it, it hooks you. It's about going fast and getting the highest score possible in the least amount of time. If that doesn't appeal to you, then I don't know what to say.

[QUOTE="foxhound_fox"]Does anyone have any Saturn NiGHTS videos for comparison? I have never seen or played the Saturn version and am interested to see how it compares.MikeE21286

Here ya go.

I'm being dead honest here.....that is quite comparable to the Wii video.

I hope you mean gameplay :|

For the most part yeah, can't really tell the graphics with that youtube quality

While Journey of Dreams looks like an early and poor Gamecube game graphically, the Gamecube was a lot more powerful than the N64 which was quite a bit more powerful than the Saturn. The graphics aren't even close.

Apparently you don't know anything about the first game. After seeing this video however, I'm convinced this is nothing but a poorly and lazily developed game which is trying to get $50 out of old Sega gamers.

Yes, so long as the majority of the gaming population regard the only reason to play games is for 'fun' then our medium will always be dismissed. Also some of us like to play games in order to relax, I used ther adjective 'airy' as it invoked a child-like sensation of flight, especially of flight during a dream. What is there not to enjoy about effortlessly soaring through strange worlds? Similarly I am also looking forward to Forever Blue on Wii as it promises to offer a similar sensation of discovery and mystique.

What are the reasons you persevere with such an expensive hobby?

I also suggest people watch the footage here as the slightly improved video quality does the graphics more justice. http://gonintendo.com/index.php?paged=4

If you want to sit around and pop pills with your saturn and get into "zen concentration" then you certainly have the right but dont come in here and pretend to be better than those who have a different idea of fun than you do. I have not heard such pomposity in one thread from one person as I have from you in this thread.

Oh thank god. Someone reasonable.

I don't understand all the negativity in this thread. It seems people have broken down gaming, and the "fun" that can be derived from it into an almost mathmatical equation. Don't you guys remember the first time you touched a game, and a smile lit up your face? The way you felt when you pressed a button and saw Mario jump? That feeling is what we should be in pursuit of with out games, not technical excellence, or "hardcore difficulty" or perfect art direction.

Nights is just... well, it's a different beast from modern games, and if you're going judge it by the same standards, you're ENTIRELY missing the point.

I am as humble as can be, why do you infer pomposity from my posts? I am just urging gamers to connect with their inquisitive childhood side instead of being so critical and quick to judge.

First, It's a comparatively inexpensive hobby. CCGs, collections, or tabletop games like WH40k, are all more expensive than gaming.

My answer to your question is quite simple. Because I enjoy it. I don't seek to improve myself or anything along those lines, I simply want to enjoy my time.

Also, you claim that gaming is dismissed. As of late, gaming is enjoy greater and greater acceptance in mainstream culture, as evidenced by it's appearence on mainstream television show like southpark. Also note the rapidly expanding section of new gamers, brought about by the wii. Children, parents, grandparents, women, are all getting into gaming, becuase the wii is the "fun" console.

Sometimes people just want to have fun.

that is a disgrace and shows what crap the Wii is.

also that boss was in the first game, which was AWESOME. dont hate it if you havent played it. its actually a pretty good and fun game.

as to this game. It seems like its just a copy of the saturn game with the same physics, graphics, and most likely sound. Pretty much a straight port from the saturn (circa 1999) most likely with a new story but nothing else.

So glad I dont support nintendo.

sega should have made a PROPER sequel on the 360/PS3 instead of this garbage. Nights In HD would look amazing.

I also game because I enjoy myself, but is relaxing not enjoyment? Sometimes I think games need no purpose or pretext, much like Electroplankton. On the surface gaming is becoming accepted because of the fun and accessibilityof the Wii, however it is still dismissed as a toy and something that does not relate to real life; nor does gaming ever evoke any true emotion or sense of real artistry outside a few exceptions. I believe gaming is becoming popular in mainstream culture because of the games that have relevance in everyday life. Brain Training/Brain Age (and the included Sudoku) which aims to promote mental dexterity, or Wii Sports which has been used as an exercise tool and so forth. Gaming at the moment is on theperiphery, it is not as indisposable as music or cinema or television. We needto strike a balance between fun, practicality and artistry.

That's some very bad editing and choice of footage, it looks like a fan trailer in a lot of ways which is hardly inspiring. That aside it looks like NiGHTS, that is a good thing.

7.2Demetri_OS

No offense aimed at Demetri_OS but I believe this is an example of the mindset of most gamers, sadly I am all too often included. We do not care if we personally enjoy the game instead we hang on the words, and more intensely, the scores, of so-called 'professionals'. It is amazing just how much the opinion of a reviewer can affect our enjoyment of a game, there is always the score looming in the back of our mind; it forces to pick out faults and not judge a game as it is but as we think it should be. I have not had internet access for very long so I can see the detrimental effects of this up-to-the-minute gaming news and criticism, we nit-pick every shard of information, every screen and every video.

you guys are not fair. This game looks like it doesn't lend itself well to a little piece of the game because it is verydifferent. Maybe if NiGHTs was limited to walking on the ground, it was in first person, and he was holding a gun you could appreciate it

Same here. It looks great, just like the original. That boss fight looked a little screwy though. Also, I'm sure there will be music in the final version! I think I'll read some reviews before I decide, but I'm pretty sure I'll get it.

Looks like another Wii flop, shock of the century!
