This will cause problems for Sony since they were likely banking on the 3DS to be 250 dollars when the Vita launched. I'm willing to bet that even in a worst case scenario, Sony did not predict Nintendo would drop the price this drastically so soon.
What we have is the potental of another PSP vs DS if Nintendo plays their cards right. Now, not only can Nintendo boast some killer apps to counter the Vita's launch lineup, but they have a drastically lowered price that is almost 80 bucks less then the Vita, almost mirroring what happened between the DS and the PSP last generation.
it appears Nintendo is not taking any chances and are willing to do what it takes to ensure the Vita does not get a chance to take their leadership fo the handheld market.
The handheld wars have just gotten interesting since Nintendo is getting aggressive and is taking steps to undercut the Vita before it even comes out. While the handheld wars could play differently this time, there is no questioning the fact that Nintendo is serious about keeping their crown as the undisputed leader of the handheld market.
Let's see how Sony responds.

they cant do much at this moment their best thing to do is release in the biggest gaming market before the years end....U.S they cant cut price because they are already selling at a loss they honestly just got to take the pain until they can get back up in fight back, drop the price 2-3 years in which would be good too im getting one regardless.
This is where Sony may have made a horrible mistake. My guess is that they assumed that Nintendo at most would drop the price of the 3DS by 20 or 30 bucks by Christmas. A price drop of this level is unheard of for a system that has only been on the market for a few months.
And while the fanboys on the site can try to paint this as Nintendo being desperate, the thing to remember is that the 3DS is not a 3D0, a Jaguar, a Saturn, or a 32X. It is Nintendo's heir to their handheld legacy and it will have all the games and support it needs to succeed. Just because Nintendo is loweing the price this quickly does not mean anything in the long run. At most, it means Nintendo is serious about remaining the leader of the handheld market.
Fanboys can try to spin this around, but the point remains that this makes the 3DS more enticing to parents, and other consumers who were turned off by the high price point.
Nintendo has just dealt a major blow to the Vita before it even gets out the door. This will be interesting to see how it unfolds.
