Nintendo is dropping like a rock now that people realize it's an updated Atari 2600. Casual game fest with motion-sensing control. Every family bought one and there's no one left who is interested. They want the REAL video games now. EVEN Nintendo admits that poor software has destroyed their system this year, something Nintendo faithful refused to admit last year even though we all told them this.

Sony profits are dropping like a rock because it released such a pricey system. People are just now starting to buy the PS3 but with the horrible start that relied too much on people who would foolishly fork over five hundred dollars for a console and trust in Blu-Ray, it looks doomed to failure. The same quality games are on the Xbox 360, and exclusives are rare these days. PS3 will sell well near its end, but Sony is bleeding money right now.

Microsoft hasa successful formula down pat. Not too expensive, but not too gimmicky or casual. Still offers great graphics and games like PS3, but has a price point closer to traditional console costs. Also, it stays simple, something PS3 has lost track of but Nintendo cashed in on. Yep, if the video game market bottoms out it's because of Nintendo and Sony, not because of Microsoft. They're the only ones doing anything right. Which is strange, because I never would have told you this during the Xbox 1 days.

If I had to sum it up in a nut shell -- Nintendo too short-term in its strategy, Sony far too long-term in its strategy, Microsoft just right.

Better than charging for demos, a brand new format and hoping people fork out $600 due to brand loyalty.

Read the cover story on Gamespot's main page. Wii sales are dropping fast. Nintendo even admits its been a very disappointing year and the momentum is gone because of poor games.

Someone do me a favor and remind me what happened to HDDVDs. the format that M$ was supporting so whole heartedly. Oh thats right, it failed, and Epicly at that. Sony and Blue Ray FTW!

Since when is Nintendo dying?

New Super Mario Bros Wii is about to land and its going to sell very well.

And even then they still have next years line-up.

Nintendo isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

This generation, all they have done is

-- Nintendo has pushed motion sensing controllers for every system

-- Sony has established that Blu-Ray is the HD format of choice, if it stays

Other than that, they're living off past glory. Microsoft has influenced the gaming industry these past two consoles far more than the PS2/PS3 or Gamecube/Wii

-- Online gaming as the norm, avatars, game tags, achievements, etc

-- Headset communication as the norm

-- Downloadable content

-- Hard drives on systems

-- HD connections and capability (remember, Xbox 1 started that before the PS3)

-- PC genres on consoles (remember, shooters, WRPGs, MMORPGs, and real-time strategy on consoles were pretty much unheard of before Xbox 1/2)

I hope Nintendo keeps doing what it's doing with the handhelds though because the DS is one of my all-time favorite systems ever. I rank it up there with the SNES, and that's saying a lot. I wouldn't mind if they dropped consoles and went 100% handheld.

Funny how the handhelds seem to get ignored in these discussion. Nintendo has done so much with the handheld, including the DS with great control and a great library.

I think Nintendo's casual formula is perfect for handhelds and companies like Sony that try to make handhelds too much of a complex gaming device are the ones that screw it up.

Except you have quite a few non-casual games on the DS, like Chinatown Wars, and quite a few hard RPGs, and old school platformers. The PSP is a great handheld. Sony updates it far too often.

Anyone with a brain would say the opposite TC. Nintendo's was the only company to try anything new. Sony at least added Blu-ray. M$ decided to make a console catering to multiplayer, thus helping destroy the single player experience, and nickel and dime everyone forcing them to pay for online and DLC. Even If I buy a new game at full price, I still have to pay M$ to use the online feature. M$'s first sku's couldn't even do 1080p nor did they have HDMI. The console was a joke, that is of course if the console worked at first. The company is pathetic and M$ simply throws money at it to get what they want. Nintendo and Sony earned they're places, M$ bought theirs.

You may have to pay (which I don't like either) but I still think Xbox offers a far superior online gaming service than Nintendo or Sony (although Sony is making waves.) PC is still the superior of all the systems online. Xbox Live is really nothing more than trying to mimic all the online options that made PC gaming great.

You do realize that the PS3 cost $800 to make for the first year or so of the gen, so it was a great deal at $600 also as of now they're both the same price? Also I fail to see how you think charging $600 for a console worth $800 is ruining the industry but having to pay $50 a year for Xbox Live and MS waiting around three years to finally try to stop RROD isn't.

-- HD connections and capability (remember, Xbox 1 started that before the PS3)

-- PC genres on consoles (remember, shooters, WRPGs, MMORPGs, and real-time strategy on consoles were pretty much unheard of before Xbox 1/2)

Here's a correction for you;

Nintendo;

- Expanding the the console market far and beyond its original selective audience (including amazing ease of use for console setup/etc)

- Most advanced controller ever

- In built wi-fi.

- Bluetooth (even though this originally started with GC of course)

- And of course popularising motion control (even though it has yet to hook many hardcore gamers.

- Backwards compatitiblity taken to the next level (via downloads)

- Miis

- Changing handheld industry via touch screen (again opening up huge a huge gaming audience) and its many advantages and changes to gaming, e.g. Nintendogs

- Opening the gaming scope as a medium to include fitness games (creating a new genre)

Sony;

- Blu-ray format (and hence advancing it, WILL become standard for HD games in the future, games using 3x DVDs in the future isn't practical, just look at FF13, they are already taking stuff out because of 360's lacking ability)

- HDD compatitiblity with a common format (2.5" SATA)

- The most complete out of the box system of this generation, including;

+ full bluetooth

+ inbuilt controller charging

+ full use of PSN

+ HDMI from the get-go (360 only adding the option later)

+ In build wi-fi

Now, lets have a look at your 360 points...

- Online gaming. This topic is about the video game market, hence PC is included. PC already has this and does his more effectively. If anything MS is a worst online gaming platform because the 360 isn't an open system like the PC is, and unlike PSN/Wii the service to play games online is far from free. Can you give credit for MS for online gaming on the console? Yes and no. On one hand, technology was getting there anyway, on the other they were the ones that did push it with the original xbox.

Anyway, Dreamcast thought of using online gaming as a core part of a console years before the Xbox.

- Avatars. This doesn't even deserve a reply.

- Game Tags. Again, PC gaming.

- Achievements. Personally I think these things are a disease on gaming. Nor did MS come up with them. No, they just put them in every single game while before they were really achievements, now they are just useless epeen points and a way for MS to get more content out of bad games because silly people are willing to grind more or do unbelievable things for useless titles.

- Headset communication. Again, you are joking right? I was using a headset for gaming years before the original xbox came out.

- I'm pretty sure I can buy full games on PC, but not on the 360.

- AGAIN, sounds like a PC to me. And last time I checked, there was no harddrive on all 360 models, actually MS removed the best 360 model on purpose. And also, unlike Sony (or even Nintendo) their harddrives are only sold by MS themselves and hence rip off their costumer base. MS IS SO HONEST!

- HD. Umm, was it actually used? Microsoft didn't invent HD buddy, but hey, I'll give you that one even (as 'MS did it first!!!', even though PS2 was released earlier and hardly anyone actually had HDTV) though it was probably annoying to setup and annoying only having one or two games that actually used it.

- Other genres on consoles;

Shooters: pretty sure there were a number of games that did it well (or even better) then MS before Halo came along.

WRPGs: Are still much better on PC, and... MS didn't randomly invent putting them on, consoles caught up with PC capablities so companies like Bioware put them on other platforms. Actually if anything WRPGs jumping to consoles has actually dumbed them down a bit.

MMORPGs: Ummm, pretty sure there has been NO stand out MMORPG on a console yet (how did you pull this one out of your arse? Seriously?). Phansty Star Online was a solid multiplayer RPG though.

RTS: Sucked on consoles before the Xbox, and still suck on consoles now... Seriously where are you coming up with this rubbish?!

Ironically, ALL you have shown is that MS is basically stealing ideas from the PC... And considering the architecture of consoles and PCs have slowly been getting closer and closer, this really isn't a surprise...

ALL Microsoft has done in gaming is built a PC that they can control 100%, which is funny considering people are still getting away with massive amounts of privacy on it. Personally, I have no doubt in my mind that Microsoft is killing gaming and milking it for all that it is worth.

NO. Overspeculation of land messed up the video game market. Read a book.

Imo, MS is the one that is hurting the industry the most. Charging for online and nickel-and-diming everyone.

Better than charging for demos, a brand new format and hoping people fork out $600 due to brand loyalty.

Um...it's $299 and has a whole lot more value then your 360.

Read the cover story on Gamespot's main page. Wii sales are dropping fast. Nintendo even admits its been a very disappointing year and the momentum is gone because of poor games.

And even with "Wii sales dropping fast", Nintendo could never sell a Wii again and M$ and sony likely would never catch up in sales to them.

Let me,an older gamer inform those praising MS. I have given my history before on here but in cases like this I have to repeat and get it off the ol chest. Im going to be 38 next month. I have been collecting and playing videogames since 1980. I have 16 consoles as of now. I will be purchasing a PS3 in FEB. I have stood inline to be #1 at many many console launches,and have drove a total of 4 hrs to pick a games up at midnight launches. I am a child of the arcade days. I have been there and done it for years.

WHY??? because I LOVE IT. Gaming was my life for many many years. Although I have a wife and kids now, its still a huge factor in my house. We all game. Its part of every day life.

I was one of the millions that stood in line for the 360 at launch. It was amazing when I first poped in COD2. It blew my mind. Playing King Kong, Kameo,ect the day they came out...They were all incredible.

BUT then after 8 months with my launch console it died on me. No warranty. No nothing. Nobody knew about the RROD at the time and the importance of having the 50$ "must have" MS warranty. So off to the landfill it goes. Then 2 months later on Sep28 I buy another 360 and make sure I get the MS warranty. As of now, its been in to MS repair 4x.

As a gamer though and through....Someone who lives it and loves it like a 10 year old....MS has pretty much single handedly destroyed my love of gaming and my enthusiasum of waiting in line at launch. They have totally taken something from me that was such a joy and a love and turned it into a regret and hate and disguest.

On top of the horrible hardware they charge money to play online to get the FULL advatage of a game that YOU payed your hard earned money for. EVEN though Im an original adaptor of LIVE from the XBOX days its still a rip off...PLUS they charge for every single map,weapons, clothes,gamerpics, themes,ect,ect..Nothing is free..NOTHING...And yet they make more money now then ever.

It really has been a bad time to be a gamer. Im thinking E.T for my Atari 2600 is less frustrating after this gen of let downs. I think a good game crash would get everyones heads out of their A$@ and back on track. It would serve them right and for destroying my love and childlike feelings I once had.

Does MS make me pay out all this money???? I dont know? BUT I do know I have been gaming longer than MS has been making consoles and I have seen how gaming should be done.

More expensive console out the gate. TC, if anything sony is making all the right moves right now while microsoft and nintendo are coasting, and coasting is not the same as dropping like a rock.

I know plenty of people who went through 3 or 4 ps2's. Faulty console designs are nothing new.

I think it was far from the failure rate the 360 has. Matter of fact it was probably under 5% just guessing.

I don't know the percent, but 5 seems like an extreme lowball.
