Nintendo Bait & Switch offers false advertising

Nintendo Switch offered first hand looks at games from third party companies, like Bethesda with Skyrim Remastered and 2K with NBA 2K17. However, the Switch has fallen victim to false advertising as games originally shown are not confirmed (as by reps from each respective companies). They are simply promising "support in the future" of their companies for the Nintendo Switch.

Dang, already? It hasn't even been a week yet and companies are going to say stuff like this? Shakin muh head.

Yeah the 3rd party situation is the biggest question. If NBA2K and/or Skyrim don't see a release on the Switch then they pulled a dirty trick on all of us. But you have to wonder if 2K/Bethesda would allow them to show the footage if they aren't committed to making those specific games on the platform. I have a hard time believing 2K/Bethesda/Nintendo would offer a middle finger like that to potential customers. Nearly every other publisher has a similar blurb about possible Switch support.

Nintendo has likely put a NDA on developers, not allowing them to talk about software until 2017. So 2K and Bethesda couldn't confirm the games if they wanted to. Nintendo showed what they wanted to because they call the shots surrounding Switch details. Developers openly talking about Nintendos product when Nintendo isn't would be kind of silly.

What sense then would it make to show off games like skyrim and 2k17 but then tell the companies who created those games that they can't confirm whether they will actually be on the switch or not? Everyone is obviously interested so why allow it to get to the point where rumors get started like this and practically confirmed? It's just bad PR and damaging to the newly revealed product

@jcrame10: It's even worse PR to show a game they know may not even see a release on the Switch. Even Nintendo isn't that tone deaf to it's customers. At least I would hope not.

Whether they are on the console or not, it's not actually bait and switch unless they physically release the console without telling us those games arent on the console. You really think we won't know that those games aren't on the console by the time switch releases?

Nintendo wants total control. They control all messaging around their products. So for them to do what they are doing here is no surprise.

Bethesda is under NDA from Nintendo I believe, Bethesda actually collaborated with Nintendo to get it in the teaser, I doubt they wouldn't port Skyrim to Switch and I kinda feel like they almost have to release Skyrim after putting it in the trailer. The real question is if it will be the remastered edition or can Switch even be capable of running the remastered edition. I see no false advertising, Nintendo needed to show something and more details will come later.

Bethesda wants to focus on selling Skyrim Remastered on PS4 and X1. Why the hell would they come out with an official announcement when even nintendo didnt oficially announce the new 3D Mario game they showed in the trailer?

If you think Bethesda just let them use gameplay of one of their biggest games ever with no solid deal to back it up, then lol

I don't know. I think people here really don't understand how things work and will come up with the craziest conspiracy theories in order to justify their love/hate for a product. People here don't like Nintendo. The idea of Nintendo showing games that aren't actually releasing on the system is fuel for their fire. It's a totally asinine thought though. Nintendo would face legal action from Bethesda, 2K, The NBA etc... The games are coming out on the Switch.

This is a question that has already been addressed before. No games have been confirmed for the Switch yet that were shown in the video except for Zelda, not even the Nintendo ones. This is because the lineup reveal for Switch comes in January. Evidence of Bethesda's support for Switch should lie in the fact that their statement outright says we support the Switch, and we will announce specific games later.

Just like that quote from Bethesda, it's obvious that now is simply not the time to announce software. Nintendo has some kind of informal gag order on it, so these companies are being a bit coy. I would think that Skyrim is absolutely coming. I'll wait to be 100% confident, but Bethesda was listed as a third party partner, and Skyrim on the Switch had a lot of positive press and internet opinion.

Wat. Cannot compute. Guess Nintendo isn't concerned about all those consumers who are planning on picking up an Xbox one or ps4 this Christmas...many for call of duty, many for battlefield, many for watch dogs, many for mafia 3. maybe it they knew for fact those games were or were not coming to the switch in just 5 months they would hold off. But oh well....we will keep justifying everything Nintendo does as right.

Maybe someone really wants Mario, Zelda, for honor and ghost recon wildlands, but we don't know if they will just have to buy the switch or a ps4/xbone and the switch.

I'm not going to bother questioning Nintendo's marketing. I thought they didn't have a fucking clue, then the Switch reveal was more effective in 3 minutes than I remember just about any tech reveal in the last few years being. They seem to know what they are doing, I'll let them do their thing.

They want to concede Christmas season? Let them. Why does it matter to your or me? They'll reveal the games in January, and we'll know then what's what.

@charizard1605: the reveal was surprisingly very good, I'll admit to that and agree with you. But every day sense has brought it downhill because of internet journalism and nintendo has put no effort into creating any sort of response.

Since we are on the topic of Donald. Take a look at Hillary Clinton's Briefing campaign. Look through a bunch of them and you will notice a something. Each single segment focuses EXCLUSIVELY on one issue attacking Trump. And there is a good reason for that. If they focus on too much at once, the message becomes diluted.

This is exactly what Nintendo was doing here. Because they are making a very non-traditional console. They wanted this ad to focus exclusively on the pitch. And this narrow focus is exactly what made the advertisement so effective. It was straight to the point, and showcased exactly what the new console is about. Now that they got their unorthodox concept out of the way, they can focus on the software. They made their pitch, and it was quite successful, now they can focus on the features and games it will come with. The dilluted messaging is probably a part of the reason the Wii U caused such confusion. Sure, more dedicated gamers might find themselves craving more. But the fact is, to the casual observer. This was right on the point, and a brilliant reveal.

I agree with you- it was well done. I also agree that Nintendo's lack of a response is infuriating. Personally, I would have gone for a steady drip feed of information, but hey- again, they seem to think they know what they are doing. For now I am inclined to believe them.

Anyone who thinks the games shown in the trailer aren't confirmed is a lost cause. The only reason companies wont confirm or deny anything is because Nintendo has things sealed down more water tight than a frogs ass. lol

basically, the games are in developement for switch (nintendo is not lying about that). they showed you what it would be like. but are not 100% guaranteed to come out.

if the switch sells well you can bet your butt these games will release and then some.

it will be interesting to see if those games do come out and if they get all 3rd party games.

they will not get them all imo.

all they need is COD,madden and fifa. maybe battlefield?

but of course if they get a lot of 3rd party switch will be more appealing.

If Skyrim doesn't end up on the switch, that is a really bad look for both Nintendo and Bethesda. I'm certain it will be, if for no other reason than that.
