1 million dollars for Retro Studios.... After the Metroid Prime Saga I'm curious to know how much theyre worth now!!

Metroid prime is the greatest game on GC and its the best game of this generation by far!! I dont think you can put a price on them to be honest.

The console has barely begun its journey to the top.
I'm not worrying that much about what nintendo does or doesn't do, that will all just work out fine.
You see the one thing i like most about them is how smart they are from the moment i've been paying attention to them.
Or was it luck? Ow well the only thing on their minds right now should be the gamble on next gen. I can't really anticipate how much their competitors have learned.

Nice thread. Yeah, Nintendo is a great company. The positives definitely outweigh the negatives. I'm assuming this thread is in response to a certain Nintendo bashing post?

I think there's nothing wrong with constructive criticism over Nintendo's problems with online, FCs, 3rd parties etc, but when it's just plain bashing the best solution is to simply ignore it, as those kinds of posts only want reactions, not discussions.

the-very-best

I'm fine when people talk about those things because it is true that Nintendo has these faults. Their online is slow and combersome and their 3rd party support is very much below average.

But what I don't understand is why Nintendo is blamed for its 3rd party support at every turn. Nintendo didn't ask developers to make crap games. The Wii has several outstanding titles on it from 3rd parties, but they are all niche titles that do not appeal to 80% of system wars. These titles include:

  1. Zack & Wiki - you know... the kiddy romp where a spiky haird kid runs around solving really hard puzzles.
  2. Trauma Center - that one game where you act as doctor and use the Wii-mote to slice and inject your way to victory.
  3. No More Heroes - the title that looks like crap but has fantastic gameplay, but because it looks like crap, no one will play it.
  4. De Blob - that interesting game where you go around as a pile of paint and you paint the town colors.
  5. Deadly Creatures - the strange title where you act as an insect trying to destroy other insects.
  6. Boom Blox - you use the Wii-mote to destroy certain blocks to create explosions and such.
  7. Sam & Max - that unknown PC title that only few enjoyed but has now been anounced for the Wii
  8. Okami - the amazing PS2 title that failed at retail and is getting another chance on Wii
These are all great titles that are out or coming out... but who the hell cares right? The Wii has games, but they are so niche that everyone overlooks them.

Definately agree. Nintendo make tons of games every year, in many genres, but all people say is "Lol no FPS! Nintendo sucks!". To the best developer in the world. Ugh. Sickening.

Metroid Prime 3: Corruption.... No other FPS had such quality gameplay , Superb boss battles, intresting new ideas. Intresting puzzles... Every other FPS has been stuck in the mold of golden eye since the N64 while Retro Studio's broke the mold, Made a new one and claimed FPS genre as its Skanky dieseased HO. Every other FPS these days are based more around online mode while there Single player sucks! I'm glad Retro never added online.

corruption is still very adventure-centric, and its one of the few things i actually like about the game. Retro did do a good job of keeping the adventure gameplay of metroid paramount while giving it more of a shooter feel.

Its more metroid prime than metroid prime hunters if that helps.

how many great hardcore games has sony and microsoft made during the last couple of years? (not 3rd parties, but SONY and MICROSOFT themselves)

elbow2k

I dare say, have you been living under a rock? Sony's first party/second party development has turned out games like God of War series, Jak and Daxter, Ratchet and Clank, Shadow of the Colossus.

It sure as hell isn't as good as Nintendo's, but damn they do make great games.

agreed sony has some great titles, but with yearly offerings of R&C i grow tired of the franchise. I cant wait for GOW3 though, and potentially a new Jax&Daxter title.

[QUOTE="laughingman42"]Holy crap they bought Retro for only $1 million! man what a deal for such incredible talent.kansasdude2009

well... at the time, they were failing. Nintendo fired over 2/3rd of their staff in order to reduce their spending. It was a bad time a year before Metorid Prime came out. But they somehow turned their act around and dominated.

i hope retro appreciate nintendo's role in their success and stick with them, or at least continue to make games for their consoles even if they're multiplats

more importantly, i hope nintendo's choice of future direction doesn't cause devs like retro to ever move to another console

i'm thinking of Silicon Knights .. they felt the wii wasn't powerful enough for the games they wanted to make, so jumped to M$

Silicon Knights only had a two game contract with Nintendo and the contract ended after they made Twin Snakes. Retro is Wholly owned and the only why they can leave is if they pull a Bungie and request there Independence.

if nintendo does so much for hardcores like you say why are all the hardcores being scared away? why do hardcores tell me the sequels of zelda metroid and mario are starting to get old

they invest so much in money in R&D to create games with old IP's because a game with just a name doesnt sell and nintendo is afraid of creating new IP's. it sounds more like a twisted double helix to me than a genius "we love the hardcore" plan

Nintendo makes hardware to fit their software really. Every controller they have ever made was designed around their games... which is very smart of them. Sadly, 3rd party developers are too dumb to study this and look at what Nintendo does correctly in order to create better games on their system. Either that, or they are too busy trying to "test" the audience that they don't fully support any Nintendo system at all!

I'm a tad biased against the Prime games, since I loved the side scroller Metroids - I hated where they went with the Prime games. But even my brother who loves them agrees that they aren't shooters.

It still a FPS if you subtracted the puzzles and exploration. Like i said in my post above which i think you missed saying "mix of FPS, Action, Adventure,Puzzle with as much exploration as the others" Its not your average joe FPS as of the likes of Halo, Perfect Dark, MoH its a whole new way of seeing how FPS can be done! Overall its in a FIRST PERSON view and you SHOOT! Its like saying Fable is not a RPG as its not turn based like FF series.

Yes the shooting is as good as im working on out! Sorry but its probaly better than words can put it! I was in rapture while playing the MP series and number 3 took me to the next stage! Perfect mix of FPS, Exploration, Puzzles with superb bosses and memorable characters.

I enjoyed the 2-D side scrollers aswell.

It's stated as an FPA (first person adventure) by most sites.

You'd either go fps or adventure if you had only the basic criteria and i would be more inclined to go for the adventure category myself seeing as the adventure aspect takes presidece over the shooting, whereas a game like halo has shooting as presedece over any other genre.

None of the Prime games are really shooters. They're adventure games in first person.

And the gameplay - especially the shooting is not as good as you're trying to make it sound. They're good adventure games with some interesting ideas (and lots of scanning), not solid shooters.

I'm actually glad they didn't add online multiplayer either, considering it was never good offline in the Prime games.

Yeah, I missed that post, I was in the process of replying to your post when I had something else to do - so the reply page was sitting there for like a half hour. xD I probably missed another post by now.

Although, if you took away the puzzles and exploration, it would be a pretty bad game... The shooting elements are just average at best, and everyone I know with the Prime games - if they like them or not - agrees. It shows new ways adventure games can be done, not FPS. But whatever.

But speaking of Metroid make me want to fire up the ol' SNES for some Super Metroid! =O Gotta go.

[QUOTE="nintendo-4life"]you know you're right, it's sometimes hard to remember that nintendo is just a developing company really.sambalimbo

*begins to rant*

LOL all the great wii games play better on GC controller, exept maybe metroid

i didnt know zack and wiki and trauma center worked so well with a GC controller! ;)

But before Nintendo bought them Retro never made a game before so Nintendo must of bought them knowing how well Retro was doing with Metroid even though it wasn't finished at the time.

I always picture this one guy working at Nintendo. Like that red stapler guy in the office. Who tries to tell the big wigs to work on some new IP's that aren't related to mario, metroid, and link. They smile and nod their heads but laugh at him when he's gone and then move his office further into the basement.

Yup. And when its time to decide what games to develop. Its never a new IP. Always mario, metroid, and link. Or new crap like Wii fit.

Bread_or_Decide

its tough coming up with new ips, sony and MS just pays others to do that for them.

Yeah its tough. When you don't try at all. Sony and MS have the luxury of attracting third parties who come up with new IP's. But they also fund new franchises, especially Sony. Heck the first year of the PS3 was focused primarily on new IP's. For better or worse that at least shows a commitment to doing something new.

so nintendo does just that: for better or worse they try to do something new.

but like you said, wii fit doesnt count? for better or worse, it is something new

sony and MS HAVE to do it like that cause they dont really develope games like Nintendo does.

you are comparing the development of 1 company that does it all itself, to 2 companies that pay many others to do it for them. what did you expect?

is that statement directed at me?

Because if it is, you obviously have not read any of my rants about Nintendo as a company, because I have several problems with them as well. I am a simple 17 year old up in my room who is a huge fan of Nintendo software and I follow their hardware in order to play their software. But I also am a strong manticore in that I own a 360, PS2 (want a PS3 for MGS4), and I even owned a PSP for about a year. I also own a gaming PC. I think that the best 3rd party developer in the world is Blizzard, followed by Valve.

I like high quality gaming, nothing more.

So then please tell me, which is a more fresh expirence. Mario galaxy, or Heavenly Sword/Uncharted? Seriously, what Sony games these days actually do somethin new? How many revolutionize platforming like mario galaxy or first person console controls like MP3. Better yet, name one company who has changed their franchise the way Ninty changed zelda with windwaker. I dont see any cel shaded solid snakes or cel shaded master chiefs. Oh but because it has the name Zelda in it, it doesnt count as a new fresh expirence though right?

I thought Lara croft grew Genitals and had breast reduction in Tomb Raider? oops i mean Uncharted. sorry its hard to tell games apart when theyre carbon copies of each other.

Weird how 20 year old characters have added more to each designated genre than the new franchises have done so!

New IP's ... Hmmm! Eternal Darknesss, diaster day of crisis theres to IP's which are from Ninty which are new from the top of my head. Ohh and Capcom are cloning Eternal Darkness with RE5! Weird how Nintendo has no new IP's but then again every company tends to rip'em off.

IP's are ridiculously overrated,

Mario Sunshine could've been a new IP.

Metroid Prime could've been a new IP.

Galaxy could've been a new IP.

All the Mario sports games ccould have each been new IP's.

Same with Paper Mario.

But....why? So that some jaded forumites don't extend their bias against a certain gaming icon towards other completely new ideas under his guise? I'd rather guarantee that people actually play the game because Mario's in it.

Well it is true that birds are decended from dinosaurs, but to say T-Rex evolved into a pigeon is far fetched....Although a pack of Velociraptors can be just as deadly. :D

I couldnt spell velociraptor so i used the the biggest thing i could think of! The T-rex!!

We also have sharks which Nintendo could buy as they was around before Dinosaurs! Plus they never needed to evolve!
