As a matter of fact I think one will.

From what we've heard (all rumors, I know) their next console will be super-developer friendly and significantly more powerful than what is avalaible. Coupled with the Nintendo magic of their first party software and quirky features, it could become insanely popular and give hardcore and casual gamers alike little reason to want to switch to a new console in 2014. One is going to suffer the fate of the Dreamcast.

This is of course if Nintendo actually tries this time...It's all on them.

Dream on. Neither one of those two are going anywhere right now. Plus should either Sony, Microsoft, or both of them were to disappear from the gaming industry, do you realize without hard competition, that there would be no innovation, no great games, no tons of 1st & or 2nd party games, etc.?

I don't think so. Most of those casuals won't be buying another Nintendo product anyway since they have Wii strictly for things like Wii Sports and Just Dance. They don't follow the industry nor care what newer iterations of those games come out

The biggest flaw I see in your theory is that Nintendo usually doesn't do well with 3rd party. And 3rd party are the life blood of the current industry.

I doubt it. Microsoft has been making truckloads of money this gen, and Sony's doing well, too. There'd be no point.

Other way around. All it takes is one of the big 2 to create something like say a motion tracking camera and the wii is obsolete.

Yup that is the key. If they can get third party developers on board with it. IF.

nintendo is going to try to cute into a market addicted to gears, halo, uncharted, killzone with mario and zelda and you think one of the other companies will drop out.... I don't see extra power being the deciding factor here especially if new consoles that are more powerful are going to be released right around the corner.

u realize most innovation comes from 3rd party and it has nothing to do with hardware? so why having extra hardware vanish and make one platform that everyone games on going to be a much more competitive in the areas we'd like it to be, the software on the platform.

I'm sorry I should have been more specific. The only way Nintendo can do this is if they get the support of third-party developers and start making more hardcore first party titles and more often. All I'm saying is that they're in the position to do so. If Bioware, Rockstar, Bethesda, Gearbox, Bungie etc. supported it with superior ports of new games, Nintendo could be very very successful. Nintendo pretty much would have to pull everything off perfectly, including online service and features, for them to reach their full potential though.

You are assuming alot, Nintendo does make good games, the problem is in that they are the same games, that couple with the fact causuals don't run out to buy something unless it's trendy and the longevity potential of the ps3 makes me think it won't be as easy as you think, MS on the other hand is in a much weaker position, no good core games, gouges everyone for price and their console is going to die alot sooner then the ps3 and there won't be much incentive for the next xbox considering it survives off multiplats and having easier friends/chat settings online (which it charges 60 a year for and I don't think people will feel it's worth it, most people were ignorant to the charging online then just go stuck with it so they try to justify it)

Nintendo can't knock either one out of the console industry. Not only that but I'm pretty sure MSFT could buy Nintendo if it came down to it.

Nintendo is multi-billion corp, somehow people here think that they know more about the industry than the people hired by Nintendo. SW pwned itself with its Kinect=flop predictions.

IDK....

If the rumors are true Ninty are preparing to further increase their gimmick factor even more with that silly touch screen controller. Stupid idea right there....

And the Ninty magic is gone, it got buried with the Gamecube.

Microsoft could knock themselves out if they don't start focusing more on in-house development teams and stop relying so much on third party multiplats. They're able to get away with it this gen, but with Sony and Nintendo having quite a few top-notch first and second party devs already, Microsoft can't afford to fall too much farther behind if next gen all consoles are closer in power than they are this generation.

Sony still got the best exclusives and MS sells well in the US because of their multiplayer component.

It's not just about power, since nintendo will be overun once again when MS and Sony announce their next consoles. Nintendo also needs to work on their online which i heard it was extremely weak this gen.

So basically in order to Nintendo to achieve world domination they would need XBLA and Sony's exclusives. Nah never gonna happen.

As long as Sony has Gran Turismo and the 360 has Halo, no one is going anywhere. Those games push consoles regardless of how successful the next brand is. People aren't just going to jump ship because Nintendo finally has a half respectable library.

That's one way of looking at it, I guess. I predict 2 years of Project Cafe receiving the superior version of 360/PS3 games (but the 360/PS3 versions still selling better due to install base), followed by 3rd parties once again repeating the PS4/720/PC trio once Microsoft and Sony release their new consoles in 2014. This will be followed by Sony and MS fanboys coming out of shadows to laugh at Project Cafe's limited hardware after 2 years.

That's just ignorant. Remember that we have all been beginners at one point.

I think this is all part of Nintendos blue ocean strategy. I guess they feel that the Wii audience is ready to migrate to the next level.

Nintendo needs to really make some new hardcore IP's for mature audiences if they want to capture the teen-young adult audience. I don't see it happening. Nintendo is too hellbent on keeping a family-friendly image. Oh.. and on top of that, we all know Nintendo doesn't do new core IPs to begin with. That would take too much money and effort, the cheap bastards.

Nintendo has sort of "broken" the generational shift. In 2014, the Project Café has already been out for almost three years (if it launches in early 2012), which means that Nintendo could release another console in maybe 2016, which would probably be more powerful than Sony's and Microsoft's PS4 and 720. Then again, the industry can't keep going that fast all the time. Making games is already expensive, as it has been proven by the studios that have closed their doors because their game didn't sell enough units this generation. The future for this industry is probably going to rely more on services and improving them rather than releasing new hardware every six years.

It's waaaaaaayyyyyy to early to declare that they can recapture the hardcore. In order to do that their online service has to be comparable or even better than Sony's and Microsofts. So far given Nintendo's past with Online it doesn't look promising.

Because they're fanboys. I'm not saying that to be mean, but it's pretty true. SW tends to highlight differences, but it doesn't hide the fact that most games are 3rd party, multiplatform games.

I agree, and I think it will be MS. It seems "exclusives" is becoming a rare word. Nintendo will survive off their nintendo branded games, Sony has a strong lineup of in-house developers, but MS is offering next to nothing at this point. If sony and nintendo get all the games microsoft gets, what is the point of owning the microsoft product? That's how I see it.

First thing that's qute funny is how everybody seems to decide to make a whole thread on what could happen if "such and such company does such and such thing and everything happens right".

A lot of things could happen in the world if "certain people decided to do certain things and lady luck deigned to play along".

I think people should stick to making threads about tangible facts and at the very least, logical conjectures rather than what-if scenarios. rant ends here.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

That said i DON't think sony OR microsoft are going to be knocked out of the industry even if nintendo's next console makes a killing and ends up being much more successful than even the wii.

And it's simply bcause sony and microsoft are corporates with lots of $ in the bank. console making is just of their many ventures, albeit a highly profitable one.

If they get hit hard, they'll just bounce right back with new ideas and more investment $ to get a hold of this lucrative platform. they're not like atari or sega, with norhing to fall back on.

nintendo realized this around the time that they released wii music, which is why they have shifted there focus more so to the games which appeal to the hardcore audience, ie, zelda, ie kirby (arguably :P), ie mario galaxy 2, ie...i dont feel like listing the rest, but nintendo came to the realization that the casual audience isnt gonna buy more than a few games over the life of the wii

In order for Wii 2 (Project Cafe) to win market share from Sony or MS, Nintendo needs to do the following: 1) Better graphics than PS3/360. I am sure it can't be too hard to outperform a 5-year-old machine. Seriously... 2) Good online. Having a unified friend code is not enough, we need a beefed up network like XBL. If its really good, I will have no problems paying a subscription fee. 3) Achievement system. Yes, go ahead and say "its not important". But there are lots of people who enjoy collecting them. Just add it in for crying out loud. 4) 3D support. Yes, 3DTVs are expensive now in 2011, but in 2013 they will be very cheap. Add 3D support just to be future-ready. All it takes is a mere firmware update 5) Good interactivity with 3DS.

Very, very doubtful.

Nintendo is going to have a lot of trouble breaking in. I for one won't buy a console geared towards children. And that's all Nintendo has to offer.
