jeez this thread blew up quickly, im shockedhow nintendo dares to do something new with interaction, and tries to get more people to play games and its seen as a bad thing.

for shame all of you haters :(

DrAwsomeness

The problem is that you're assuming Nintendo did this because they wanted to "give us more interaction". That is not the case. They wanted to compete in the console market without really competing, and figured out that if they strip the features down and create a nice marketing buzz, all you need is tacked on motion and you've got a winner. It's sly business, some might say shady. They're giving you very little and pretending that it's "better gameplay".

You think Microsoft and Sony want to give you better gameplay?

If you think yes, then you're a tool. When the 360/PS3 were both designed, Sony and Microsoft both thought that it would make them the most money possible. Obviously they were wrong. Do you really think if they could go back in time they wouldn't change their designs? No. They would both make Wii-like consoles.

And then we would really have no quality games!!!1 Sounds fun!

To my friends: " Hey! Lets go play Mario Party and Mario Soccer and Mario Baseball and Mario Golf and Mario Kart! "

Don't forget Brain Age and Wii Fit.

Obviously the Wii isn't trash to the millions of people (and me) who bought it.

You can't use sales to qualify whether or not something is good, as evidenced by the pet rock example. To prove to me that it's good, I'd need surveys from a nicely sized sample of Wii owners claiming that they are satisfied with their purchase. Looking at the games they have available, I would assume that any "yes" responses are either 10 year olds, or liars.

Of course I mean casuals. (ie. those who are not hardcore, and not in-the-know when it comes to gaming)

Uncle_Uzi

I just think it's a little elitist to believe that "casuals" aren't intelligent enough to know whether they are enjoying what they are doing or not. A lot of people, me included, think the Wii can be very fun, and fun things sell. That's economics 101, folks.

Well, are you planning on getting Halo 3? If not, then you are restricting yourself to a console that undoubtedly has no game better than Halo 3.

or bioshock, or oblivion, or gears.

Drug dealers make lots of money, so does the mafia. I suppose their success must be earned then right? Surely it isn't a businessbuilt on exploitation.

For the last time, NINTENDO'S ONLY OBLIGATION IS TO ITS STOCKHOLDERS. Not gamers. Not you.

Deal with it.

Ninento cares about selling its product first and foremost. To accomplish this they need to make something that we will enjoy and continue to enjoy. If they made garbage that was ripping people off the sales would plummet and the stocks would drop.

As a game company they are trying to do everything in their power to please us as consumers to continue to make money and continue to flourish, in that sense they care about us. All big companies are like that, they want to know how they can please their customers as much as possible and give them what they want so that they can make money and not just short term.

Pet Rocks sold quite well.

Yeah, I'm sure the company that made pet rocks is still sitting up on its high horse today

How has Nintendo changed? Nintendo was always the company that tried to do what the other companies weren't doing.

Mordred19

the gamecube was directly competing with Sony and MS last gen. It's hardware was second most-powerful.

They may have been competing for the same market, but they never did exactly what the competition were doing. I mean the Gamecube was a purple box with a handle.

Doesn't matter if they like it. The fact remains that they aren't fully aware there's more out there, and Ninty is cheating them out of those experiences. It isn't elitist to assume that a group, whose only membership qualification is little knowledge, has little knowledge.

I play my Wii much more than my 360. And I'm pretty sure I'm not 10 years old.

Let me translate this for you guys.

"Nintendo are making monies. I are angry."

Seriously, that was a bad post man. Mainly due to the fact that it isn't true.

darkmario123

Or it could be that Nintendo literally betrayed it's target audience, since it couldn't keep up with real companies.

You answered your question right there. If their old strategy wasn't working, why shouldn't they come up with a new one? Are you saying that they should continue doing what doesn't work until they go out of business?

I'm saying Nintendo is failure when it comes to the video game market.

Where ever they are, they have more money than they should have. The same applies to Nintendo. Their gimmick is getting undeserved success due to marketing and hype alone. The Wii does thrive on the merit of its games.

So companies should no longer be able to advertise their products because someone who doesn't know what the product is might actually take an interest in it?

Just because a person has little knowledge of gaming doesn't mean they should be ignored.

in 10 Days Nintendo releases The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass. In the next 4 months Nintendo will release Mario Galaxy, Fire Emblem, Battalion Wars 2, Advanced Wars DS 2, Super Smash Brothers Brawl, and more. Retro Studios just finished the outstanding Metroid Prime 3, and are currently working on a new title. Nintendo recently bought out Monolith Soft. They are making a new Nintendo IP called Disaster: Day of Crisis. They also have an RPG in the works for the Wii as well.

It isn't the fact that they make money that bothers. It's the fact that they're essentially "tricking" consumers with a gimmick to do so. All the facts are there...

-appealing to the least knowledgeable crowd (which they then identify as the "uncatered to")

-pricing the system at half the competitors (saying that it's an attempt to make gaming more widespread and accessible, when in reality they're making a profit on each one by selling old hardware worth 100 bucks)

-producing games that rely heavily on motion sensing (while ommiting massive amounts of other gameplay options, calling this "innovative gameplay" aka. gameplay that is cheap to produce)

I could go on and on, but essentially Ninty has found a way to project every negative of their systems as a positive, and people are eating it up. With 360 and ps3, you know what you're getting. The absolute bleeding edge at a price much below gaming PC's.

My lack of research on that company has pushed me into a corner. So I will take a different route:

Not doing anything but marketing? Have you played MP3? The controls and the experience are top of the line.

I like the wii quite a lot(albeit the few amount of games) and I have been playing games since commodore and colecovision. Ninendo makes quality product and always has.

I believe Nintendo deserve there sucess in trying something "new" (yes motion was done before but Nintendo implemented it a different way) as is now expanding the market. Just becuse certain people don't like casual games does not mean it is a bad system. The Wii has seen great "hardcore titles" like Zelda and Metroid Prime. If you do not like the system then don't buy it.

Nintendo had to change their stratagy because the pevious one was not working so well. Did you know Nintendo did believe in having the most cutting edge technology with in their console. Like the Nes, all the way to the gamecube. I mean Nintendo even collaborated with Sony to make a CD based console but backed out. Compare to the Playstation 32 bit processor to the N-64 64 bit processor. Nintendo had the cutting edge tech but in the end Sony won with the games. Same with teh Gamecube, the Cube is technologically more powerful than the PS2 (can be see from games like Rouge Squadren and RE4).

Andtoend,Nintendosystems(orWiiinthiscase)arenotGarbage, theymakethemostreliablesystemsintheWORLDandhaveoneofthebestcustomerservices too. We all complain about the "lack of games" but in the end, the Wii has not even been out a YEAR yet. We all need to give it time to prove itself. Just like later on, the Xbox360 proved that it can compete and it can get Japanese developers to make game for it. Just like every new thing, you have to give it time

Well MS (not really a dev) has had Halo 3, ME, BioShock, PGR4, GTA4, CoD4 and others headed to their platform for a while.

And Sony has quite a bit going for thier troops in '08.

And sorry, I know you can sya the same thing, but the vast majority of the titles you listed look really stupid and pointless to me.

One problem though... It does have better games then the 360 could ever dream about having. Sure, the 360 will have more games, however, the Wii will have fewer, but higher quility games, just like the Gamecube and N64 did before it.

Not to mention... I have both a 360 and Wii. I'm happy, and no matter how bad you try and make the Wii look, it will prevail, and deserve the respect. How did the 360 look at this time last year?

At the end of the day, the product is worse, so why support it? We all know each company is out to make money, but at least Microsoft and Sony are trying to make money by selling quality hardware and software. Nintendo doesn't even care. They made a weak, overpriced machine and are selling it to a susceptible crowd.

The evidence is standing clear in the open for all to see -because of the GameCube's immense failure, the then penniless Nintendo was forced to change aim.Uncle_Uzi
your lack of knowledge is laughable. Nintendo was anything but pennyless after the game cube. Although it cam last in sales, they sold at a proffit from day 1, meaning they earned the most money in the end.

Nintendo deserves a lot of respect for what they have accomplished. They have gone from being dead last to the leader. They were able to create a console that was affordable and can have great games. They didn't fall into the price trap that sony set for themselves. The wii is doing well because it literally does have games for everyone. While it has its share of mini games, it also has great games like MP3, SSBB, No More Heroes and BWii. You post because not only are you a fanboy, but you don't even seem to know what you're talking about.

Precisely. No other company is making as many quality games as Nintendo right now. They're trying to cater to everyone including casuals and hardcores. It's amazing how many people can't accept this fact and continue to perpetuate lies.

i find it funny how people bring up wii fit and brain training and say nintedo sucks and doesn't care about it fanbase anymore.

you might want to look at the crap sony constantly shoved down our throats over the years.

-singstar

-eyetoy (involving minigames, one of them called eyetoy kinetic was an excersise game  i don't remember sony being hated on for that)

-buzz ( a series of trivia games)

-eye of judgement (a virtual trading card game)

now there wasn't just one of each of these series. singstar has over 10 iterations, eyetoy has 7 and buzz has 5 different games attatched to the name. so beforeany cow tries touse wii fit as ammunition against nintendo, just remember that would be quite hypoctritical.

Hey, try harder and you can miss the point entirely!

Of course I mean casuals. (ie. those who are not hardcore, and not in-the-know when it comes to gaming)

iunderstand

I just think it's a little elitist to believe that "casuals" aren't intelligent enough to know whether they are enjoying what they are doing or not. A lot of people, me included, think the Wii can be very fun, and fun things sell. That's economics 101, folks.

Doesn't matter if they like it. The fact remains that they aren't fully aware there's more out there, and Ninty is cheating them out of those experiences. It isn't elitist to assume that a group, whose only membership qualification is little knowledge, has little knowledge.

So companies should no longer be able to advertise their products because someone who doesn't know what the product is might actually take an interest in it?

Just because a person has little knowledge of gaming doesn't mean they should be ignored.

You're right, they shouldn't be ignored. In fact they aren't. It's just too bad Nintendo won't get out of the way long enough for them to be able to see it.

They're giving you very little and pretending that it's "better gameplay".

i dont see anything wrong with them doing it just to make money, its the same with every company. beleive it or not, microsoft didn't make the 360 to give you amazing online and tonnes of games, they made the 360 becauase Bill Gates wasn't happy with his billions upon billions of dolars, so he decided to wave his money in everyone's face and break into another industry, hoping to get even more$$$ to stuff into his solid gold mansion.

Look you don't like the Wii. We get it. But a lot of people do. Not only the "least knowledgeable crowd" but also gamers, like me. Or any other Nintendo fan on these forums. You talk all gamers desipse the Wii, but if that were the truth, there would be no sheep.

Nintendo "doesn't deserve" their success? So now you're the judge, sitting in your stand with your gavel in hand, deciding which companies deserve to make money and which ones don't?

This argument doesn't have anything to do with what's being said in the thread. If Ninty would stop passing of mediocre systems as "innovative", and focus entirely on making great games for other systems...all would be kosher.

Of course, they're not. They're using their games as leverage to sell mediocre products for a hefty profit.

At the end of the day, the product is worse, so why support it? We all know each company is out to make money, but at least Microsoft and Sony are trying to make money by selling quality hardware and software. Nintendo doesn't even care. They made a weak, overpriced machine and are selling it to a susceptible crowd.

i dont beleive the product is worse. i never had a chance to play all those classics from the snses/genisis and n64 era so the Vc alone was worth the price of admission for me. and the fact is if the wii didn't exists i would still be stuck with my old ps2, waiting for price drops on the other consoles. i love the controller and there are heaps of upcoming games that i want to buy in the future. i would never swap my wii for another console atm.

there is not ONE game available on the ps3 right now that i would buy, not even multiplats, so for me the ps3 is a peice of crap, and thats coming from a person who supported sony since they entetered the market.

Nintendo developing 124 games

President Satoru Iwata tells the Bloomberg news service some 79 DS, 45 Wii first-party titles are in the works.

By Tor Thorsen

One of the more widely used nicknames for Nintendo is the "Mario Factory." The moniker is certainly well-deserved. The Kyoto-based publisher is famous for its robust catalog of first-party games, which feature franchises such as the Legend of Zelda and iconic characters such as the aforementioned diminutive plumber.

So far, though, 2007 has seen Nintendo's flow of self-made games taper off in the wake of the Wii launch lineup. Not counting virtual console releases, less than a dozen first-party Wii games have been released this year, including Super Paper Mario, Wii Play, and WarioWare: Smooth Moves. Nintendo-made DS games have also been a fairly rare animal, with the ****of 2007 being led by the less than acclaimed Wario: Master of Disguise and Diddy Kong Racing DS.

Luckily, though, the Mario Factory will soon be churning out Wii and DS games at a steady clip. Speaking today at a Tokyo press conference following Nintendo's recent earnings report, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata said that his company currently has no less than 124 games in development. Of those, 45 are for the Wii and 79 are for the DS.

While comforted by knowing so many games are in the pipeline, owners of either platform still want to know when the next wave of DS and Wii games is due. According to the Bloomberg news service, Iwata said the next batch of first-party games is due out at the end of summer--and just before one of the more crowded fourth-quarter release slates in years. No specific titles were mentioned as being part of the batch.

Link

I messed up with the number of DS games, but 79 is still an excellent number.
