Right now I'm sort of leaning towards the DS, since all the extra features and such the PSP can handle (Emulators, internet, mods, etc) I can already do on my PC at home, while the DS has a ton of games I would love to play in my spare time (Castlevania, Mario, Mario Kart, Megaman, etc).

Anyway, in your opinion, which portable system should I get. Name all the pros and cons you can think of for each, this will be an important decision. Once I make it there will be no turning back.

Supporting your opinion with some great games for the system wouldn't hurt at all either

DS GAEMS: At least one epic game in every genre. Whilst making new genres of epic. Examples of Epic: EBA, New Mario Bros, Brain Age (lol casual), Advance wars, and A LOT MORE AND OTHERS.

Psp GAEMS: Mostly ps2 ports. FDAFSFA Almost all ps2 ports.

PSP is tailored towards graphically-hungry gamers (who can't play games that are anything less than visually pleasing) on the go ;

DS is tailored towards all sorts of gamers, from casuals to hardcores, who would spare the graphics for an enjoyable variety of truly unique games, and who only preoccupy themselves with graphics on their home console or PC rigs.

Personally, I'd go for the DS for its massive games library : there ought to be something in there that would please you. PSP is a bit more towards people who missed the fun with their gamecubes and xboxes last generation... I have a Ps2, so I see little reason to get a PSP. The unique games from the DS add a variety to what the PS2 offered (and still offers) me. The PSP looks too much like the PS2 in terms of general games.

You will find that there are better games on emulators than on either the PSP or DS natively. For that reason alone, i would go PSP because its a more powerful system. Without emulation, the DS wins hands down due to its vastly superior game library imho.

It all boils down to choice in games.

Ive been a ninty Handheld lover since the first GB, but the PSP is currently my favourite. I love the brew, and I rather the games.

DS is still great though.

Either way you cant go wrong.

DS is the PS2/SNES of handhelds. one of the best RPG lineups ever, excellent platformers. Old Skool action. Strategy Games and Adventure games by the buttload.

The PSP is the PS3 of handhelds. unneeded multimedia features and no games

get the PSP if you want a console-style system for portable use, with many similar types of games as the PS2, and various multimedia features

get the DS if you want something a little more unique or are a big fan of Nintendo 1st Party Games

both have their pros and cons, personally I use my DS slightly more than my PSP but I'm happy enough with both purchases

a lot of those are availible on the PS2/ports. Those that arent either suck (medal of honour) or are watered down sequels to console games. The DS has better games out right now, better games coming out and most importantly exclusive games. The PSP is the PS2's retarded brother

I prefer the PSP, I just like their lay out of games more.. The DS has some really good games, but it seems in my eyes half the time the PSP has more mature games.. And the bonus with this in the near future you may be able to purchase PS1 games for the PSP legally, I can only imagine what it would be like playing a game like FF7 on the PSP all over again..

What I suggest you do is go to the top rated games on both sides and read up on the ones, to make your decision.. Also look on games on the horizon.

I like my DS more then the PSP, but I hate that little analog nub thing.

DS has a large variety of games and you can even get emulator cards for it if you are cheap/want to demo a game before buying it. PSP is the multimedia center that can be modded to play homebrew games and emulators, it also has some good games, not as many as the DS, but arguably has more quality titles and less filler.

Regardless there are still alot of games that have been either enhanced or are good exclusives.. In the end when you look at the top rated games for both of all time they are pretty even.. It comes down to what you like in the genres. That being said alot of the DS's big games were a bit of a disapointment.. Like the New Super Mario Brothers game was good.. But was awfully linear, sure there were a few ways you could end the level to go to some hiddne level, but half the time it wasn't even worth doing.. I guess I just can't see them trying to do something like Super Mario World or Mario Brothers 3 again..

I also must admit this isn't fair in some rights.. Mario Karts for instance, its a great game don't get me wrong. But other then tracks and a few new features its just like the older ones.. Also I must say that the multiplayer like the Wii's is a disapointmetn.

In the end its a toss up with the PSP cheaper then ever, I really can't see you going wrong with either one.

You can fix both the troublesome analog stick and the dpad (well for fighters like Street Fighter Alpha 3 Max) with cheap addons. There is a Analog stick addon which makes it like a regular one making it much easier to use.. Same goes for the dpad. Though the Dpad isn't that bad, though I havnt played a fighter such as SFA3 on it yet.

Yeah you can get them at your local Gamestop.. Analog stick add on sell alone for like $2.. I don't think I saw the dpad selling alone.. But it was in this amazing bundle that included durable carrying case, 2 game sleeves, head phones, ciggerette lighter adapter, wristband attachement for the PSP, soft fiber cloth for cleaning screen, USB cable, USB computer software to manage information, and one more thing I can't remember off the top of my head, all for $20.. IMO it was quite a bargain..

What, are they illegal to buy, or are you simply trying to avoid starting a conversation about torrenting DS Roms for the nintendo DS? I guess I'll just have to google this all up...

I traded a DS for a PSP and no regrets, DS is uncomfortable to game with, it is for people with realllly small hands.

Here are PSP exclusives above 8 and good non exclusives: http://au.gamespot.com/pages/forums/show_msgs.php?topic_id=25935655&page=0

The new castlevania hasn't been added to that so here is the review: http://au.gamespot.com/psp/action/castlevaniathedraculaxchronicles/review.html?sid=6181938&om_act=convert&om_clk=multimodule&tag=multimodule;picks;title;2

I would go for the PSP

  • It has lengthy games
  • Better games (IMO)
  • Some good as up and comming games ( god of war, FF7 crisis core, Silent hill, secrent agent clank and there more!)
  • Multimedia

Anyway just go for the handheld that you think has better games.

Here are some good DS games: http://au.gamespot.com/pages/forums/show_msgs.php?topic_id=25359188

If you're into adventure games, then you'll love the DS.
Other than those, I can't really comment (the only non-adventure games I've got are Resident Evil DS, Mario Kart DS and SM64DS - all of which are good/great)

DS Pros-Lots of fun intuitive games, with quite a bit of variety. Like games where you have to think? Hotel Dusk and Phoenix Wright. Racing? Mario Kart DS. Strategy? Advance Wars, Luminous Arc, Age of Empires, and Front Mission. Puzzle? Picross and Meteos. RPG? FF3 and Mario+Luigi: Partners in Time. Platformer? NSMB. Adventure? Zelda and Castlevania. None of the above? Trauma Center, Osu Tatakae Ouendan/Elite Beat Agents, and Animal Crossing. Also, BC with the GBA is a big plus considering the GBA's massive library.

It's also much better for traveling with its very long battery life and relative durability.

DS Cons-Friend Codes, it's graphics, while nice, will not please the average graphics-wh*re. Also, it lacks games in the Sports, FPS, and Shooters in General genres. The online, while servicable, is not very robust. Also, with all the good games, you get a lot of very crappy ones.

PSP Pros-Powerful graphics, multimedia capabilities, and emulation capabilities. If you like games that have graphics comparable to the PS2, the PSP is a good system. While it doesn't have the same calibur of memorable games as the DS, it still has a few gems, such as Daxter and the recently released Disgaea.

PSP Cons-Short battery life, not as robus library, and general lack of variety in games. Also, there are the infamous loading times that plague many games, even a few of the good games. Also, memory sticks can be annoying as well. Games are also more expensive. For every3 PSP games you can buy, you can get 4 DS games. Also, if you factor in price of the PSP itself, that adds up to a lot more DS games.

I own both and I personally perfer the DS myself, but it's really your choice. *cough*gowiththeDS*cough*

Regardless of what gamerankings says about the two, pretty much the general consensus of the handheld community and those that own both state that the DS is far superior to the PSP.

I mean sure Gamerankings states that the PSP has more 8.0-8.9 scoring games but seriously just look at that list and most of them are games either ports or multiplats. No I'm not kidding go there and see for yourself. I'm not stating this because that's all the PSP has, but more so showing how stupid review scores are.

The PSP is more of a niche console if anything. It trys to seek people who want that "console experience" in their hands and does deliever with some games like Daxter are Burnout. The system also contains many ports, however they are often ones that you want like Valkyrie Profile, Final Fantasy Tactics, Disgaea, Power Stone 1 & 2, Street Fighter Alpha 3, Darkstalkers Series, Castlevania Rondon of Blood and Symphony of the Night, etc. But besides that there really isn't too much going for it since original titles (especially compared to the DS) are few and far inbetween while having third party titles subpar to their predecessors or just subpar in general such as Star War Renegade Squadron, Metal Gear Solid Acid 1, 2, & Portable Ops (if you REALLY thought this game was good then you must have ridiculously low expectations) and by recent previews Silent Hill Origins, and by looking at the future there isn't too much happening to it along the lines of third party titles. As for multimedia capablities, that is the biggest crap I've ever heard. What is a few gigs of memory going to do for you? Hell I can't even fit half of my music library on that.

The DS however is sorta opposite. It tries to be a handheld nothing more. The system is flourishing with ground up titles like Eliete Beat Agents, Trauma Center, Contact, Hotel Dusk, etc. Hell the system has gotten so popular that it's begining to get REAL extensions to franchises such as Dragon Quest IX, Contra 4, and Tales of Innocence. I wouldn't really listen to those who say that the DS doesn't provide a lengthy experience, I've played some games that have immersed me enough to put a few hours into the day. The variety of the system is extreme it lasts from super easy mini-games to dreadedly hard of the hardcore like Etrian Odyessy. The future also looks very good with as I've said REAL extensions of games coming out for it and companies like Bioware and Treasure having titles lined up for it. The thing is though that the whole "fresh and new experience" is few and far inbetween. The majority of the games on the DS just try to be solid games with a few uses of the touch screen such as Lunar Knights, Castlevania, and others.

Basically if the PSP sounds really appealing to you. Get it. But if not the DS is the only way to go.

Neither. I own both the PSP and DS, and ever since I got my laptop for $499 (dual core), haven't even touched them.

DS: Almost as epic as the GBA, will catch up in a years time.

DS: best purchase I've ever made.
