It's true, but why the hell say such things so openly?

Thankfully Xenoblade sold more in the US than in Japan. In fact, it sold out. The sequel wouldn't have been localized otherwise.

The Wii U name is still shit.

Your 2 statements contradict each other. If the game sold more in the US than Japan and sold out, then it's not true.

It is true that localizing niche games of such scale is a pretty dangerous business decision and said games would most probably bomb unless it's proven that they have an audience. Even more when it's about a Nintendo system; sales and profits are not guaranteed.

What I say is that I'm grateful that wasn't really the case for Xenoblade, and I still want more games to be localized regardless.

@JangoWuzHere: Great point. I was going to credit developers for just putting subtitles in their games. But you are right a proper localisation Can really sway fans towards the game.

[One more thing I forgot to mention here]

The guy not only said things he wasn't supposed to say (business trade/secrets and all that), he basically told everyone "Hey, no matter how much you scream at us to get your most wanted game localized, we don't want to lose money trying to localize a game that doesn't have enough fans to help recoup the costs." It's the truth, but it also makes Nintendo look bad on a PR standpoint. Ergo, Nintendo said "lolno get the **** out of here."

It seemed to be an honest slip up and he took full responsibility for it at the very least, but Nintendo's trust with him is no longer there. That said, I just don't like seeing a person getting fired in this tough economy were in right now and depending on what type of job he's seeking or if there's anything available, yes, it can be quite difficult to get a job that paid as good as his last one.

I feel sorry for the guy, losing his dream job and all, but he really brought it upon himself. He basically told us what we already knew: that games like Xenoblade don't sell on Nintendo platforms. Thus, they don't get localized. A fact that sheep refuse to acknowledge here, on SW.

For Ninty to bring a game like XB to the west, they have to eat the costs somewhere else. How sad is that? Still, it's one thing for me to say it, but an employee? This man has balls of fucking steel...

Nintendo Wii U is effectively dead. No amount of NDA censorship will change that.

I never understood the localisation argument, how much does it cost just to translate the text, most people would just be happy with subtitles.

People don't realize localization isn't as easy as just sending a game to different regions and then translating the language. There are shipping fees, licensing fees, advertising, etc. You pay the translators to translate the script as close to the original as possible, and you pay voice actors/directors to try and match the dialogue to the characters' mouth flaps, in the recording booth that you rent. Needless to say, localization gets expensive as hell, and if you're doing it to please a small fan base, you're losing more money than you make. That's Economics 101. He said some games don't get localized because there's just not enough people interested. As much as I'm cool with Nintendo (despite some of their questionable decisions), I'm in the minority; most people would rather play the "mature" consoles.

You can have opinions, but dont share them on the internet when it's over your job.
