No offence, but Nintendo and "innovative" in the same sentence equals lots of :lol:

Both.
Without innovations and gimmicks, gaming wouldn't move forward.
unfortunately, people like to use the words out of context and like to play them out as being something bad.
Just pure ignorance I tell you.
The Wii itself was innovative and a bit gimmicky. The gimmick went bad because of how some devs tacked on motion controls instead of figuring out ways to take advantage of it like so few Wii games do.
Hopefully, next gen, developers will try to take full advantage of motion controls.
Can't wait to see how Nintendo makes them work for Skyward Sword.
The Wii-mote gimmick died off a while ago. People are just like "meh" now.

It actually seems the novelty of the Wii has died off. The Wii draws a parallel a lot like the music game industry. It was a new way to play games, it sparked the imagination of the users, and it is a great social device that you bring out when you have company over. That excited the company and then they all go out and buy Wiis. Once everyone has Wiis the novelty wears off because it no longer becomes that social device to bring out since most people already own one and don't want to get together to play something they already have.
This is evident by the drop in hardware sales over the last two years, at the same time the PS3 and 360 are hitting all time highs in hardware sales. It would be interesting to find out what percentage of Wii users are now moving on to a PS3 or a 360. It seems Sony and Microsoft may both benefit from the Wii bringing in non traditional gamers into the industry and having a portion of them now want to play video games and move on to one of the HD systems.
In no way am I saying the Wii is a bad system. For a larger percentage of the Wiis userbase, it was a novelty item however.
and yet there are load of games on the DS made better by the touchscreen. Even one's that don't use it are benefited by the second screen for map display and inventory managementBefore DS, innovative.
After DS, gimmicky.
People will argue the DS second touch screen was innovative, but it was not. It was a slapped on average touch pad.
Iphone is what made the touchscreen device actually good and usable. DS, not so much. ***coughstylus***
And the wii:lol:
I will hold judment on the 3DS, till I see first hand if the 3D works+ adds to the gameplay.

Yeah, really gimmicky
Let me guess, you just started gaming this gen? I can understand not liking Nintendo's consoles or even their games but to say they haven't done a lot for gaming is a freaking joke. (To be fair MS and Sony have contributed for the greater of gaming as well)No offence, but Nintendo and "innovative" in the same sentence equals lots of :lol:

Innovative. Sure, some of the games on the wii are gimmicky but there is so much innovation that to me it doesn't really matter. Super Mario Galaxy 2 had original ideas nearly every level lol. But, Sony and Microsoft do innovate (sort of) but still copy like crazy off of nintendo just saying.
Little of both, I picked gimmicky because the few good first party titles it has doesn't even come close to the amount of garbage that was dumped on it this gen.
I'm actually surprised at the amount of people saying they're innovative. The majority of the comments I've seen about Nintendo have been very negative on this board.
All game companies are gimmicky... but Nintendo is far more innovative than Sony or MS...
Nintendo did Rumble, Disk Drives, 3D headsets, touch screen & glasses free 3D first in the world of home video game consoles. I'm sure they've done more, those are just off the top of my head.
Sony has done.... uhhhh..... ummmm..... dual analogs I suppose.
MS has given us... well nothing, in terms of innovation... save for Kinect.
I agree, they made some good and bad decisions, although people seem to only think of their recent "gimmicks" (motion control) and forgot some of those innovations you mentioned and- wait did you say button layout? How many other systems took the button layout of an N64 controller?Anyone who says gimmicky is a fanboy, and straight up lying to themselves. Nintendo has been innovating the industry since before many of us were even born. Just look back to the analog stick, in game saves, rumble, official wireless controllers. button layout, and now motion controlls and 3D, ect. While some people may not like or agree with some of the decisions Nintendo has made there is no denying that theyre innovative.

i bit of both honestly, more on the innovation side though. they are definitely trend setters, they also consistently release quality hardware. i'm not a wii fan in the slightest, but i love nintendo.

The current controller layouts are all based on the SNES layout with obvious upgrades and modifications. The d pad on the left 4 buttons on the right, shoulder bumpers, and the placement of start/select. The SNES controller was basically the standard which everyone had to live up to.

Started gaming this generation? No, what made you think that?
Nintendo definitely isn't innovative within the gaming industry. At least not this generation. Tell me something they've done that is innovative? And don't say the motion crap, because it's not innovative. It's been here with us for a long time. They just wanted to evolve it. There's a difference between that, and being innovative (for example IW with their revolutionary Modern Warfare franchise).

Let's see, 3D games without glasses, handheld gaming, rumble, touchscreen, and probably even more than that; and really? Calling Infinity Ward more innovative than Nintendo? That's a joke.
Both. Until the DS and the Wii, they were far more on the innovative side, but innovation doesn't bring commercial success... so they started coming up with gimmicks and hit it big.
