Ok, I have to admit, as a big Nintendo fan, the Wii has failed. Not sales wise but games wise it has to be the worst console this gen, I had high hopes for it, some great games have been released and this year a whole lot more will be released. But Nintendo is killing my hope in this console, and here's why.

  • Online: I know It's bee said time and time again, but man friends codes wreak, Xbox 360 and PS3 have a high kid audience(beyond belief right?) and they get online and curse and more stuff, Microsoft and Sony don't care, they leave the responsibilty up to who should really me taking care of the kids, THE PARENTS!
  • Some of the first parties aren't that great, or looking that great: I don't see how anyone can hype Metroid Other M, why didn't they just make another FPS, or just a conventional TPS with like over shoulder shooting, something like Deadspace set in a Metroid universe? Some of the design decisions Nintendo has made this gen are mind boggling, and they like to convince people "It's all part of this plan" if the plan is to drop few hardcore gems a year, and then a few shallow games coming in, I don't see where they built off of their delusional "Blue ocean" plan, but not to bring casuals in, but to just become a crappy to producer, who gave up all hope during the N64 era, and is just hanging around now.
  • Spin offs, spin offs, spin offs: why do they released all of these crappy spin offs of good series's? Zelda spin offs, Mario Spin offs, sports spin offs, and such, stop that! All of those ip's and all we see are new Mario's,Kirby's, and Zeldas's, Mario Karts and Donkey Kong games, and DK is a joke now.
  • Failed Add ons: That Wii speak channel is terrible, what's it's use? No one is using the Zapper, the Balance board, the Wii Speak, or even Wii motion plus, just a bunch of gimmick sales men releasing bad FPS adaptations and exercise games. Add the Wii Wheel to that list.
  • Boring channels: Who uses the everybody votes, nintendo, rate my Mii, weather, news, mii, photo, channels anymore? Nuff said
  • Storage: Biggest mistake ever, 512 MB of standard memory, what is this, 2001? And then come 3 years later with the crappy solution of high capacity SD cards.
  • Years of "It's going to get hardcore this year": Sorry nintendo, what was the blue ocean going to do again? Include everyone? Wii was to become a hardcore console now? It's 2010 now. I'm tired of waiting

Can you imagine what would happen if, next year let's say, Nintendo launches a console that's HD, featured a normal wireless dual-analog controller, and more powerful than PS3 and 360? System Wars would ******* implode upon itself...

True but will the casuals and those like the OP (and myself) still be with Nintendo when the next gen arrives?

I think they are going to suffer loses if they think a repeat of this gen will work in their favour.

So in other words, Nintendo should just make a 360/PS3 copycat, to directly compete for a share of a much smaller pie of consumers, therefore lowering their profit margin. Doesn't make much business sense.

Why would they do that? All 3 next gen systems would be mostly the same. I would rather have them be different than Sony and Microsoft.

my biggest complain is the online. Nintendo needs to work on it greatly with all the money they now have. I also expect from them next gen to have a powerhouse of a console.

I think Reggie commented that there will be changes you won't expect (could mean digital download only for all anyone knows). If it challenges the competition on all fronts, then I'll definitely keep an eye on it. After this gen thats a big hope however.

I will laugh out loud if Nintendo does a about face and goes back to traditional controls for the next console. All of a sudden traditional controls will the IN thing and MS and Sony will be jumping hoops to get out of the motion control corner they are painting themselves. Suddenly Nintendo will be called innovative and pioneering even though its the same ol'thing.

Nintendo's next console will have a much different control set up even if it uses the same features, they always have always will do things this way. I don't think they will leave themselves behind in power as much this time either, but they really picked the worst time to release a weak console (just as we all go HD, nice work lol). The biggest problem is the online, friend codes and all the over protectiveness need to go :x the kids they are protecting are more than likely left to run riot on the internet anyway these days.

Other than that the game droughts were same old same old, Nintendo need to stop relying on 3rd party companies because when have they come through for them? use some of that Wii printed cash and buy some studios.

think about it from a technical standpoint,2006 hd was nonexistant, its 2010 everybody still dont have hd tvs yet,it kind of messed up the flow of the painted picture people have for this gen but it wasnt a bad time at all

I agree with it all, the incredibly bad online, weak games, useless channels... And I really want for their next console to be as great, but people have to stop buying it for Nintendo to see they're doing it all wrong console wise. If they change nothing in the next generation, I'm boycotting them.

Im not talking about this board. I was talking in general terms. The casual owners of the Wii aren't going to make the leap from this gen to the next. So those sales figures are gone. Then you have the group of of Wii owners who realised they had to go out and get another system this gen (or knew this from the start). I doubt they'll make the same mistake again.

Also anyone who got the Wii because it was an alternative won't have that view on Nintendo's next console because they will probably have to give users what Sony and Microsoft are already offering (HD, better online experience, and very soon motion controls). So they'll lose that appeal they had going for them this gen.

Then factor in the gamers who are tired of waiting long periods of time between the same old (good yes but still they aren't new anymore) exclusive titles and you have a large number of potential buyers gone. This won't be a problem if Nintendo can attract 3rd parties to make multiplats for their console but that could be a problem.

I'm glad Nintendo took the route they did. Whenever I play the X360 and the PS3, I feel like I'm getting the same experience with minor differences. When I play the Wii, I'm getting a much different experience so I feel like my money is going towards something more substantial. That being said, I could never own just a Wii.

Really, the best thing Nintendo has done in the past 10 years was make the Wii the way it is, the Wii put Nintendo back on top for the first time since the SNES, Nintendo will not change their formula just because you think it should be more like the 360 or PS3.

those could be problems just the fact that nobody knows what nintendo is planning for the future and how its going to plan out.maybe they have those covered?maybe they dont?who knows but thats really a well thought out theory many people have the wii as a primary console, alot of people didnt have to get a new system because they was satisfied with the wii, however their are some that arent same stands for ps3/360. Finally casuals may make a leap to next gen, do you know how many times a casual gamer walked into my store(gamestop)and asked for nintendos new handheld and dont know what the name is just knows its made by nintendo?if nintendo could capitolize with different hardware like they do with the many different ds reinnovations they could certainly get the casuals again.

Thats true everything we have been discussing is speculation. Although the casuals that own a Wii are much older(average anyways) than the ones that own a DS. I don't know how many adults keep up with what Nintendo/the video game industry in general is doing.

Yeah, I totally agree. There is nothing a PS3/360 can do that a PC cannot.

Wii is it's own experience. Does it work with all games? No. But when done right, it's a blast.

Sucks for you. I love my Wii.

- Online: Never use it reguardless. I don't use PSN either.
- First party is amazing, and I think the third party is great.
- Not forced to buy spin-offs.
- Not forced to buy add-ons, except Wii Motion plus which is amazing.
- Not forced to download channels. I use my console for games, not to look at weather.
- I've never ran out of space, and I have a good amount of N64/WiiWare games, and saves from like 30 games.
- It's been hardcore since launch. People just aren't playing the right games.

The Wii was meant to attract a different audience that don't care about high definition graphics or online gameplay. There's plenty of options to choose from if you want those features.

Correction, Another Gamer that forgets about the Nintendo Wii's Virtual Console.

I still have all my Nintendo consoles, but how many times can you play the same old games?

lots of times actually.

Can you see yourself playing the New games today 15 or 20 years from now?

It's no different.

Let's not forget Nintendo's position last gen: They were 3rd place with the GameCube. While it was profitable for them, they correctly concluded the same thing would have happened again this gen if they simply followed the 'better graphics/better processor' route.

They decided to focus their energy on advanced controller hardware rather than graphics, keep the price affordable, and go for a new audience.

They don't have the financial backing Sony and MS have. Nintendo essentially does consoles and games, and thats about it. Think about the other income sources MS and Sony have.

While price isn't everything, there is no way the Wii would have sold as much as it did if it was $400+ dollars.

Also, keeping the architecture similar to the GC made it easier and more affordable for 3rd party developers, as well as their own. Thats a big plus in a bad economy.

And now, they are positioned for nextgen, with a better mastery of motion controls and cheaper hidef graphic options, along with a whole new, previously untapped user base.

DazedDarkness

I would much rather have companies try new stuff, than keep the old traditional stuff.

I would also rather have them try something new and fail, than just keep the same old stuff. Because if it fails, that's unfortunate, but it's only one game. If it's brilliant, it becomes an influence for numerous new games, and then we have a ton of good games.
