Nintendo NX To Be Revealed In Mar-May, Announced in June, Released in Oct-Nov 2016

Nintendo (7974.Japan/NTDOY) slipped 5% in Tokyo after Nomura Securities said the mysterious new console NX, to be unveiled this June, will cannibalize the existing sales of 3DS and Wii U.

According to analyst Junko Yamamura, Nintendo will make NX available by 2016 year-end’s shopping season. Nomura expects Nintendo to announce the “concept” sometime between March and May, unveil the actual console in June, and launch it between October and November. “We think the NX will start to boost operating profits in 18/3, when it will have been on the market for a full year and will have a line-up of software titles, which carry high operating margins.”

Okay, so several things:

• The timeline checks out- Nintendo can hold a preliminary conference in, say, April, to reveal the system, sort of like how Sony held one for PS4 in February, or Microsoft for Xbox One in May; they can then do a full blowout at E3 in June, and launch in October or November;
• The release date timeline is in line with what we have heard from the manufacturing pipeline, reported by iDigital Times;
• The timeline checks in with precedence too- Nintendo does have a Direct every year in April, June is E3, and consoles do launch in Q4 of a year, generally speaking;
• The new system is expected to cannibalize the 3DS and Wii U both, confirming that it may be some form of a unification of handheld and console

Basically, this sounds increasingly likely now, and if it is true, we may be, at the earliest, two months away from knowing just what the NX is.

I'm curious, are they waiting to reveal the NX, or are they waiting to drop the ball that Zelda U is the lesser port of an NX killer app and the shit-storm that could erupt if they reveal that too early? best to announce that bit later to minimize time for Wii U loyalists venting their hate Nintendo couldn't properly support the console to the end. though that'd piss me off, Nintendo would be stupid not to try to have Zelda U as a NX launch title.

Sounds about right... even though I'm not really a Ninty fan, I'm very interested to see what this console turns out to be.

The NX version will be the port. Wii U version will probably be worse, but it's the lead platform.

Hopefully The Legend of Zelda will be ready as a launch title. There's no point in getting the inferior Wii U version with NX around the corner.

everything about this sounds very interesting. i never had a Nintendo console before because I dont like Wii, but if this is good, I'll buy it.

Depending on whether or not the NX has some kind of second screen solution, I may buy the Wii U version.

It'd be awesome, but not unprecedented, Nintendo did it with NWC last year and Super Mario Maker :p

I'm just surprised that for something that is this close to release, something with so many big companies working on it (off the top of my head, at least Nintendo, AMD, and DeNA), something that had its dev kits sent out to third parties October 2015 at the latest (with earlier showings having been done at E3 2015 and E3 2014), something that apparently has an entirely brand new concept... we still haven't the foggiest idea what the NX is. What is it going to be? Why have there been no leaks? How have there been no leaks? The 3DS and Wii U were almost completely leaked by the time they were revealed, the NX is a total mystery still somehow.

I think they're going to be too late to the party. I can't imagine them showing something so new, and innovating that they'll be proper competitors for the Xbox One and PS4.

Since when has Nintendo cared what its competitors have done? they have and will continue to do their own thing. I just hope what they come up with next will be more successful. Though not having to use the TV to use the system is one of the best things about the Wii U.

so..they release the Wii...then the WiiU with the exact name,appearance and zero advertisement to actually make it look new over the actual Wii.NOW a 3 years later they want to desperately release yet another console? LOL!!! im seeing SEGA all over again here..I have zero faith in Nin.I lost all my love for anything new from Nin after the N64.I simply could not care less for them at this point. Prove an old fan wrong and we'll go from there.

How long has in theory Nintendo had to work on new projects for the nx? Nintendo dropped a clanger with WiiU and had just Mario for launch and then zero games till March.

People kee saying that Zelda NX would be the best possible launch title. I disagree. Fully 3D MMO RPG Pokemon would have this thing flying off shelves. And since GameFreak would be working on a title that works for both the console and handheld, Nintendo fans will finally get the console Pokemon game they've a always wanted.

Didn't the PS4 and XB1 also remain pretty much a secret (in terms of specs) until very close to the actual release? Especially the PS4, the rumours available pre-February show were pretty much all wrong.

@Desmonic: rofflcopter! No, not even remotely close in the case of the Bone. There was a leak that told us it would be Kinect only TV controller with low range specs like almost a year before the reveal.

Why? The PS4 can't even match the hype or sales of the Wii in its prime. I don't think Nintendo is looking at a dying console market and saying, oh yeah what it needs is the Nintendo version of the PS4! You see, they tried that already. Gamecube anyone? Wii U anyone? When Nintendo tries to be the competition they fail. When they branch out and do something new, they succeed.

I need to see launch lineup and immediately cross off any Mario games and see what's left.

VG leaks had very accurate specs for both the PS4 and XB1 months before they were officially announced. Only thing they got wrong was the amount of ram in the PS4 which doubled at the last minute.
