Nintendo or Xbox - who has been the better competitor to Sony?

Yeah. I remember a popular question on forums being "if you were in charge of Nintendo, what would you do?" Many of the answers were cringe. In a nutshell, it was basically:

• GameCube part 2
• cater to AAA third party
• Star Fox, F-Zero, Metroid, and other games that have yet to crack 3 million sales but are somehow really important
• buy third party companies

It would be so delusional. And they thought they were 'saving' Nintendo with those suggestions. The GameCube vs PS2 was a 22 million vs 155 million slaughter. Yet people want Nintendo to make a part 2 of that... It just doesn't make sense. I honestly think the Switch is their best console because it sells like the Wii, but has the audience and games of the NES/SNES and more.

What actually happened is that Nintendo bludgeoned Sony right out of the handheld market. There was such shame at Sony they left the market forever, while Nintendo still has a foot in the door in the home console market with the Switch also functioning as a home console.

If big third parties get on board Switch 4K like Rockstar, there won't be much reason for Sony to exist.

I've seen Nintendo change strategies in the home console and portable market, but never outright wave the white flag after getting mercilessly beat out of the market like Sony did by Nintendo.

Xbox is SONYs biggest competition. Nintendo doesn't directly compete with either.

I once owned a Vita and couldn't stomach Sony anymore when they just ran away from Nintendo like chickens after getting savagely beaten out of the market.

Universal Studios, Disney and many other film producers are Sony's biggest competitors.

Despite the sales talk here, I really don't see Nintendo as a direct competitor with the other two. I think they'e doing their own thing.

As a primary gaming device, no one who is interested in what PS and Xbox has is going to Switch and no one who is interested in Switch is going to PS and Xbox.

Sony dumping the Vita was BS. They were like, others can make games, we're done. Asshole move.

It's funny to call Nintendo a competitor when they have been making clear that they're not competition anymore, more like an alternative to Sony and Xbox.

Nintendo has strong legendary licences and a total monopoly on handheld devices since they released the Game Boy. They just don't do the "power race" anymore since that's not what appeals to them.

As for Xbox, I guess they're the sole and only competition here since they are clearly fighting agains Sony for supremacy.

I guess the moral of this story, is that it's all well and good for Nintendo to say they're not competition to stay under the radar, but they have taken over the indie scene, are getting more and more AAA third party support, and third party AAA games like MH Rise are breaking sales records, not to mention Nintendo are on track to have the best selling platform ever.

When the 4k Switch drops, Nintendo will be even deeper entrenched in the same market as even the OG Switch is already getting high end games like Doom Eternal that are competent ports due to the scalability of game engines in the present day.

To me it looks like Nintendo has already checkmated the competition because mobile tech is quickly catching up and they have a complete monopoly over the more desirable and mainstream hybrid form factor, while MS and Sony are stuck in front of the TV.

Considering they Nintendo have been outselling PlayStation for 36(?) months in a row, I’ll say that they are the biggest competitor! Of course the poor disillusioned cows will try and move the goalpost and say that the switch is a handheld even though most people use it as normal console only….😂😂

What is even the point of a Playstation this gen? The most expensive games of any type of system and their exclusives go to PC where it will be cheaper. Hell it is not even like it is the most powerful console because the Xbox is the most powerful. It is an overpriced system with overpriced games that will end up cheaper on the PC. It is not even like the Playstation even has something equal to Xbox game pass.

@CanYouDiglt: gamers are willing to support their favorite games and developers. Ratchet and Clank was number 1 on Amazon top sellers list for video games. If you don't like the price, then wait for a discount.

The 4k switch will be interesting to see if AAA devs take time to deliver quality 3rd party content its difficult to not take notice when its selling the way it is.

To be fair to @casey-wegner, Nintendo didn't completely drop the Wii U. They gave it decent games for a while actually. It was plagued with droughts, but meh.

The Switch shouldn't really cater to AAA devs imo. They're fine with what they're doing now, for the most part. What they need to improve on are:

- Online: seriously, they're so far behind that it's crazy.

- Games: with the combined handheld and console, you'd think they'd push out games much faster... They need to work on that.

Xbox... Easily. Yes, Ninty is hugely successful, but MS operates withing Sony's play-pit.

Perhaps if Nintendo did have competition, it may try to improve its online capabilities and push out games much faster. Thanks to lack of competition, Nintendo, like all companies that have a monopoly, has become "lazy" and has little incentive to improve its services.

Until the day a company comes to challenge Nintendo in the market it has a monopoly in, it will not change. The "blue ocean" Nintendo is now in needs to become a "red ocean" to effect change.
