I hope they do it and make it backwards compatible. The 3DS hardware is pure garbage but I really want to play the games.

XL means extra-large. That would make it a full-blown console, rather than a handheld.
XL would hopefully mean it had bigger controller with better buttonplacement for adult people ...
Not only is a handheld 3DS successor in development, but Nintendo is almost certainly doing R&D on a future console, just as Switch is coming to market.
Switch itself went into development in 2012, just as Wii U was launching.
Can't be right. I've had people telling me the Switch was the handheld. Because they didn't want to talk about the specs of the console. So what is this for?
ETA: This will be the thing your pokemon will be on in case you were wondering.
Hardcore gamers like high end devices, so of course on a forum people will argue the Switch is a handheld. If you think of it like a handheld it is high end, and a good complement to the 'real' home consoles.
To the masses, "high end" is bad. That's part of why the Vita failed. The mainstream consumer wants a good bargain, and they just want some fun. The visuals are secondary. Nintendo has to emphasize the home console aspect of the Switch in order to sell it as a versatile device, which makes it seem like a better deal.
A dedicated handheld might make sense to consumers who only care about the final price tag. That goes for the system and the games.

Also, the power consumption and battery life.
This is one of the worst moves Nintendo could ever do.
That said, if they're just now thinking of a 3DS successor, then it'll probably launch in the next 4-5 years after the Switch has had its run, but ehh, we'll see.
I just hope Nintendo doesn't shoot themselves in the foot.

Cut down Switch with just the mobile mode and reduced price.
