[QUOTE="Tylendal"]People who think that Nintendo are creating an artificial shortage need to read this.wooopz

How about all during the year when we all saw decreased NPD sales and there was always a sell out??

I think it was JAN 435K then Feb 335K yet it was always sold out?

apparently they can produce 1.8 mil a month on holiday months but on regular months they can only produce ~500k

watch the numbers go back to ~500k after the holidays which is great anyhow, but yet ppl will say its still being sold out and they cant keep up with demand

i h8 to break it to u ppl but thats creating artificial demand

What makes you think they've been producing 1.8 million a month all year? I'd say that they only just recently reached production limits of 1.8 million a month. Plus, as I recall, sales in North America jumped up from 300k/month to 500k/month when the sales in Japan dipped, whereas back in January and February, the Wii was selling only slightly less than the DS.

i didnt say they were producing 1.8m a month all year long. read what i wrote again. what im basically saying is watch them start producing less after this holiday system but ppl will still be saying they are selling out and cant keep up with demand. Which would then show artificial shortage.

Then what makes you think they'll be producing less?

"Artificial shortages" rank right up there with spitting in customers' faces in terms of stupid business practices. Nintendo won't pull down production. At worst, they'll keep production level, because chances are demand will fall to manageable levels next spring. But they won't limit production for the sake of keeping their product "sold out."

Hmm these are crazy numbers I wander where Nintendo managed to get the supply from. I thought they werer only producing 1.8 million per month? Were retailers just holding consoles for black friday?-Renegade

Uhmmm...if they sold 650,000 in two weeks, and there are roughly 4 weeks in a month, and they are making 1.8 million a month...do the math.

Plus it is possible for Nintendo to risk a shortage on one week in order to ship more consoles during a week they project will be much busier, like black friday.

I doubt most of those sales are for properly owned systems. How many of those do you think belong to scalpers attempting to make a quick buck during the holiday season? I am sure if someone looks up craigslist or ebay, you may find a surge of those systems on the listings all ready to be bought up by over eager people who will just perpetuate the dealings of overpriced consoles.peralta775

Of course, but if everyone floods Ebay with those Wii's then they won't be able to sell them at above the MSRP, unless there is a greater demand then there are number of Wii's on Ebay... The prices will fall after a day or two... and that's not happend... So even if they are being scalped they are going to people who want them... and really they are going to the people who want them the most (Willing to pay the most)... It's efficient actually, more efficeint then rafles, or waiting in line...

People seriously that's worldwide. That's really not much of any better then they did lastmonth. Think about it. 650k in 2 weeks worldwide. Say half of all of those sales are in the US which is probably pretty close that's 325k. That would be 650k in a month. They sold 520k last month.

What, the 35,000 a weekthey've been selling in Japan?

Just because Nintendo of America sent out the press release, doesn't mean it is referring to only NA sales. Nowhere in that article does it state those 650,000 were only NA sales. I think it is logical to assumethat number is most likely world wide sales.

I don't. November is the start of the big holiday push. Sales for every console almost always double in November, and that's usually the minimum. Most of the time they triple or quadruple. The Wii sold over 500k in October. It's not beyond reason for the Wii to sell over 1.2 or even 1.5 million in November in NA alone. Hell, it's expected.

Not if they don't have stock. Honestly that's probably world wide sales and if that's the case that's really not very good at all.

First of all, for all you know the 500,000 in October sales WAS the doubling you speak of as people want to get the jump on the holiday season instead of waiting until the RUSH when they have to fight crowds. We also don't know that those numbers will hold all month or if they will drop off after the black friday rush. Second, Nintendo has already stated there will be shortages. THIRD, according to your own numbers, you predict the Wii will sell over 1.2 to 1.5 million in NA alone. Okay...so add in the roughly 140,000 the Wii is on track to sell in Japan for November, maybe another 200,000-300,000 in Europe...and you still fall under that 1.8 million total shipment.

My point is simple. The numbers work. There isn't going to be some sory of major insane shortage because NA might have sold 300,000 a week. People here are acting like the Wii is going to have a demand for 3 million a month but Nintendo is only sending out 1.8. Not so...no matter how you look at it.

First of all, no, the 500,000 in October was just a natural progression. The Wii's been selling 400,000-plus per month since July.

Second, I think you're seriously underestimating the Wii's holiday selling potential. If supply was unlimited, I'd say that the Wii will sell 1.4 million in NA, 500,000 in Japan, and 900,000 in Europe. That's just for November. IF supply was unlimited. As it stands, Nintendo probably hit the 1.8 million cap last week.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but those are not worldwide numbers. NOA announces how they're doing in NA. The only part of Nintendo that does announce worldwide numbers is Nintendo of Japan since they're the main headquarters.

I'm not underestimating anything. I just don't think the shortages are going to be as insane or crippling as people here make them out to be.

And to be honest, even if they are....I already have my Wii so I really don't care.
