IMO Nintendo calling it 3DS was a mistake. It gives the impression to devs they need to make a 3D game. And the impression to consumers the games they buy will be in 3D. If they named it something like Nintendo AdvancedDS:P They could of put on the box if it was 3D compatible or not. You can't put not 3D compatible for a platform that has 3D in its name. Its like buying a blu-ray with a DVD disc inside.

Thoughts?

I think the fact they launched it without greater differentiation between the old DSi and XL was a bigger problem.

Actually, it's exactly like buying a blu ray player- any bluray player will also play dvds. Any 3ds game can be played with 3D on or off. You could even say it's like buying a bluray combo pack- watch the bluray version or the dvd.

Actually, it's exactly like buying a blu ray player- any bluray player will also play dvds. Any 3ds game can be played with 3D on or off. You could even say it's like buying a bluray combo pack- watch the bluray version or the dvd.

It's more like buying a 3D t.v. so that you can get better refresh rates. You don't even need to use the 3D to get the benefit from the system it's just higher quality than a non 3D system.

In the T.V. space a 3D capable t.v. has much higher refresh rate because they have to flash the image on screen 2x as fast with active or passive lens'. However the benefit is that the higher refresh rate will make even 2D content look cleaner and crisper and gaming will be better as well.

The 3DS uses a different technology so it's not the same in that respect. I don't know if the 3Ds gets better refresh rates. However the build quality, the capabilities, and the hardware are just great. I dont' know what features this touts over a DSi, since I skipped that gen, but in my opinion, if you haven't gotten off of your DS or DS Lite you owe it to yourself to get a 3DS. Actually you should have gotten it the week of the price drop whether you got it 1 day early from Target or Wal-Mart or you bought it earlier and asked them to fullfill a 14 day price change guarantee so that you could get the awesome hardware and free games.

I mean the DSi used to be the same price that the 3DS is, but the other consoles got a price drop. So really everyone is benefitting if they wanted to upgrade or replace an aging or dying unit of an older generation. 2GB SD card isn't the greatest, but it's a nice addition. Especially considering the fact that there are some REALLY good DSi games to be bought and some interesting 3DS ones will come out.

As long as they don't segment the 3DS market I'm happy with my purchase. If they add a second analog stick to the thing next year I'll be fine as long as developers don't start making it mandatory to use. The 3DS is pretty solid. Especially at its current price point. It really just needs games. So as soon as a the next 100 something pokemon are released on a 3DS series, the console will probably explode.

Hindsight is 20/20. Sony shouldn't have released the PS3 with dual 256MB memory chips so that they could have had a cross game chat feature. Microsoft shouldn't have tried to force Xbox LIve Gold on PC gamers. Apple should have made the Mac more gamer friendly...

At the end of the day though... it doesn't matter. I don't think calling it the DS3, would have made a stronger impact. Maybe Mario Kart will just be better when you have the 3D on. Maybe it won't have an impact. It's better than people give it credit for. Maybe they could have gone with higher definition cameras. That would have been nice. At the end fo the day though... it depends on the quality of their games OTHER than ______ 64 in 3D library.

The DSi ware is strong enough as it is, but not so strong that it's a good idea to save some money and just get a DSi instead. I'd say stick with your nintendo handheld until you're compelled enough to get a 3DS. But prices went down no matter how you look at it, so... it's a good thing IMO.

you do have a point. I cant tell you how many casual gamers i talked to that thought this was just a DS with added 3D visuals to the top screen. It would have worked out as a fine name if it hadnt been that the DS had like four different updates all with the name DS in it but still being the same system. How was a NONGEEKY gamer to know 3DS was actually the DS successor unless they were told? SO yeah new name would have gotten more casual buyers

The problem with the name has less to do with 3D and more to do with consumers not knowing that it's new hardware after all the DS revisions. After the end of the starfox trailer I watched it had a fairly lengthy message about how it wasn't a DS game and wouldn't work on those other platforms.

Valid point TC. I (I've never looked at the DS's so I don't pay attention) thought that the 3DS was all 3D games. I was actually looking to buy one on eBay if the price was right - assuming that they'd be in 3D, all of them (games). I honestly didn't know this... hmm

Vita should be called PSP GO 2 considering that it will have the same earth-shatterring success the PSP GO had.Or even better: Dreamcast Portable should be Vitas real name,as it will probably be Sonys last handheld and could and should bankrupt them.Next-gen expect Uncharted, and all the PSN and flash games Sony is selling at launch on Vita to be available on the 3DS 2.

Maybe they should have just called it the DS2. That would have been clearer.

I don't think that the lack of differentiating between 3DS and DSi/DSxl/DSlite/DS is going to have a big impact. By the time the PSV releases the 3DS library will be substantially better (than it is now) and the people who will want to play these games (which is what really drives hardware sales) will soon find out you need a 3DS to play them.

When I first played a 3DS at a Gamestop Kiosk, I was playing it at a certain angle as the Kiosk lock wouldn't allow much adjustment. And when I turned the 3D on, it was pretty easy to notice the distortion. My right eye was in severe pain after I got done playing it (Dead or Alive was the game in the system at the time...). Not sure if the angle I was playing the game was the cause. But I'll just assume for the moment that it was. I just think it would be more convenient if they delayed it to add such a feature since they do have cameras in the front. The delay would have also closed the gap a bit software wise instead of having such a long drought right after its launch window....

I think the main problem is that a typical consumer or mothers thought this was just another iteration of the DS, not an entirely new handheld. The system needs to be rebranded.

How dare they associate their new product with their last handheld product which sold phenomenally well! Gamble again and completely change the name like last time...

It allows 3-D and it's the DS' successor. It makes perfect sense. Maybe soon they'll start making non 3-D games for it and they'll put a sticker on the box that indicates if a game is 3-D or not, but until then it's just all 3-D... or it's just sitting on my desk while I wait for Super Mario 3-D and the other good games to come out :P.

Although the name Wii grew on me after a while, i still think Wii-U is a foolish name. If they belive casuals are having a problem diferentiating the 3DS from other DS's, won't the same thing happen with the Wii-U and the Wii?

[QUOTE="HaloinventedFPS"]

they tried to cash in on the 3D gimmick (thanks to Avatar) it failed of course, because 3D is a gimmick

I think Vitas overrated graphics are the real gimmick.

Why you mad? There's nothing wrong with fantastic graphics. Anybody with eyes knows this.

I think the main problem is that a typical consumer or mothers thought this was just another iteration of the DS, not an entirely new handheld. The system needs to be rebranded.Diviniuz
What would you call it?

anything that doesn't that isn't one symbol difference from its predecessor.

What, like PS1, PS2, PS3, and PSP? Or did you mean like Xbox and Xbox 360? I personally think that the idea of rehashing the names of game consoles is boring and unimaginitive, but according to others around here, you'd swear Xbots like myself wouldn't buy another MS console if it wasn't named "Xbox-something-something." I'm a firm believer that loyalty belongs to the console maker, not the brand name. After all, a Nintendo handheld still wrecked the competition without being called Gameboy.

yes, it was a terrible choice for a name. Not because of the 3D part, but because people think it's just yet-another "original" DS re-release and not a whole new next generation console.

[QUOTE="DarthJohnova"]They should have called it the FailDS.foxhound_fox
Why? It has done pretty good commercially, and should explode come Christmas.

Do you mean into pieces ? Sale or no sale the 3DS has failed since launch.

3ds was just a bad marketing name to begin with. For awhile (and i'm sure still amoung the general public) people assumed it was just a ds with 3d, not a whole new next gen handheld.
