no question these smartphones are interupting the future of gaming handhelds. Thats why I think its odd the 3G version of the NGP should of been a full fledge smartphone aswell. basically combine the NGP and the Xperia Play.

There still a market for traditional gaming handheld though.

Eventually it will happen, but it's still years away. The lack of buttons and dedicated game development community (largely due to the lack of capable and consistent hardware across the industry line) are what limit the smartphone medium from overtaking handheld gaming devices.

The biggest problem with handhelds is that they're getting too expensive for their own good. The DS didn't really explode in popularity until it fell to $129.

Mobile gaming may be noticeably inferior to dedicated gaming handhelds, but many people would rather just use the smartphones they already own than invest $250+ in a dedicated portable device (which, incidentally, they'd have to uncomfortably carry together with their phones and ipods).

To make matters worse, that $250+ could have been invested in a "superior" home console.

To me, most jumps between generations offer little more than a graphical upgrade. That's not always true though, as the N64 and PS1 really made 3D environments realistic and the PS3 and Xbox 360 made online a possibility (I KNOW THE PC DID EVERYTHING FIRST!) Since people who game on phones don't care about graphics, the only thing that is going to keep people playing is to offer something phones can't yet. That thing is online atm. Handhelds seem like a generation behind consoles and phones a generation behind them. If I were to make a guess, phones will overtake handhelds when they have nothing to offer except better graphics. Its a big reason as to why I think Nintendo isn't going to have such a successful portable generation, especially since it really doesn't innovate off its predecessor like the DS did. Its also why I think the NGP will beat Nintendo. If I can play Call of Duty on the bus with my friend who is home sick, people will look up. Its something that can't be offered on phones yet that is really pretty cool.

No.

There will always be a HARDCORE gaming market on Handhelds. And both 3DS and NPG are dedicated to these markets.

I have an iPhone myself, and even the APPS that i have are NOT EVEN ENOUGH to satisfy my gaming urges on a typical NYC subway ride to work.

Or that $250+ could have been spent on games for your smartphone as well as any other apps you may want for your phone.

The market is surely fading. With an iPod touch being cheaper and offering cheaper games than both the NGP (assuming so) and the 3DS it's a no brainer.

Well if all the mainstream franchises gets iterations on the smartphones/tablets casuals will start questioning traditional ones for sure. "Why should I buy a 3DS/NGP when I already have an Iphone, that can play a cheaper version of a "Resident Evil" game?" .....Although for a core gamer, those are watered down, shallow versions that will not replace the traditional handhelds.

Then again, 3rd party franchises aside, ppl are drawn to 1st party franchises too you know. They don't even need to reinvent the hardware, a Pokémon MMO would suffice in order to save themselves as a last big desperate push, if it goes that far.

As for the 1$ app thingy, no that won't make a dent in traditional handheld gaming sales, at least for now (3DS/NGP gen), maybe next gen.

They don't need to worry about that until smartphones can "reinvent" movement and camera controls to work on a touchscreen....

Wait what? Call of Duty Portable? :? The 3DS flopped? 4 million units in a month is flopping? Nintendo is mad? Where does Nintendo even come into all this? Project Cafe stinks? Have you even seen Project Cafe?

Really? Are you talking about the hardware, because that is just incredible. The software? Yes, that is lacklustre, but do you really expect AAA games for a console right out of the gate? Do you remember the PS3 and how long it took to hit its stride?

Basinboy

iOS for iPhones and iPad so far are pretty consistant and they have a pretty big gaming community.

Nintendo takes them seriously and a few developers make a lot of money from these platforms- Gameloft, Chilingo,

Android O.S. is starting to make some headroom with Honeycomb and their next iteration Ice Cream should work across both phones and tablets-

Regarding Nintendo.. For a company that stated they will only release a new console when they have some great new idea to back it up with. Glasses 3D gaming is kind of weak tbh.

This. Smartphones are much like the PC market, though computers were where games were designed, with consoles coming from that legacy. Handheld game devices were established well before there were practical mobile phones though.

It's the naming scheme to differentiete andorid versions. Rather then just 2.2 (froyo). There is also gingerbread (2.3), and other treat named verisons prior to those that I can't be arsed into remembering. I believe cupcake is one.

CoD is on the DS already and Cafe isnt released as of yet so its hard for it to stink and finally 3DS sold several million so its far from a flop.

Oh no! Well we will see. I just sold my PS2 at the beginning of this year. I had been using it as a DVD player but it was acting up so i decided it was time for a Blue Ray player. Still haven't watched anything on blue ray but will soon.

Exactly what I was going to say. As long as Nintendo continues to focus on making quality games that kids can play, there will be a market for their handhelds. Sony should follow suit. Smart phones could be more powerful than consoles and parents still wouldn't buy them for their kids.

I spent $60 on "popular" iPhone games and almost none of them were good. They're merely visual eye-candy with bad gameplay. I could saved the money for DiRT 3 FFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUU

Once game developers can learn to properly craft mobile games encompassing all the different genres out there, handheld gaming may not be needed anymore. At least that's how I see it. Either way, mobile/handheld gaming doesn't interest me much at all, so I don't really care.

Infinity Blade is a PunchOut clone

GTA Chinatown Wars is basicall the PSP version with worse controls + fingers blocking the screen

Asphalt is a ripoff of Burnout, which the PSP has (and is also way better)

When my son gets older, i do not think i will want to give him a cell phone (yet). I think i would be much happier seeing him have a DSiXL.

Exactly what I was going to say. As long as Nintendo continues to focus on making quality games that kids can play, there will be a market for their handhelds. Sony should follow suit. Smart phones could be more powerful than consoles and parents still wouldn't buy them for their kids.

Alot of kids these days have high tech phones.

no question these smartphones are interupting the future of gaming handhelds. Thats why I think its odd the 3G version of the NGP should of been a full fledge smartphone aswell. basically combine the NGP and the Xperia Play.

There still a market for traditional gaming handheld though.

Nintendo thinks that Sony will need to reinvent portable gaming? How exactly is their 3DS reinvention or are they acknowledging defeat? ._.
