Nintendo held a press conference this morning to discuss financial gains, new games in the works, and overall plans for the next year. We have been reporting on the goods of that conference all morning long now. What we didn't get to you are Mr. Iwata's comments on Ken Kutaragi retiring from Sony.
Mr. Iwata has stated that he would love to see Kutaragi join up with Nintendo. Even though Ken is retiring, he will still hold an honorary position at Sony. Mr. Iwata then stated that honorary position may make it a little tough to work with him.

A cheap shot... funny. :) But a cheap shot none-the-less.

Anyway, the treories behind Ninty's and Sony's console's are so different that even if Kutaragi DID join in with Nintendo for whatever reason, it would accomplish little, other than a hefty slap in the face to Sony.

Nintendo have been behaving rather fanboyish lately,I don't recall Sony stating they "welcomed" Yamauchi when he retired.

I guess when you go from being seen as the kiddy console, to being seen as the popular console with no games, you can become cocky.

When a company is in lead for too long... they do tend to get cocky. Nintendo really pushed around their supporters when they were on top and now look what Sony has done to themselves.

If Nintendo wins this gen and then the next one... I think they too will get cocky and be dethroned by another.

As for this... i dont see it as being cocky at all, just polite in honouring a rival.

haha... and if sony DID offer anything to Yamauchi, the back lash would have been sevre... that little old man was fill with wrath.

Er... sony has yet to make a single console that was more powerful then their rivals... actually they were all VERY poorly designed.

Every console they've made has been the most powerful when it was released.  :|

There's nothing poorly designed about any of them.

Most powerful this gen is still yet to be seen.

And PS2 was designed with plastic guiding tracks on a laser reader that has a lot of motion. Using plastic (which warps over time) was a poor design flaw that Sony kept denying until they were sued.

1.  There isn't much doubt that the PS3 has more overall processing power than the 360

2. Ken Kutaragi designed the console architecture, not the reader in a DVD drive.  I don't see how its relevant.

It's more straightforward than EE was.  I don't think it'll be problem.

Wrong. The Playstation was started because Nintendo *screwed* Sony over when they realized that *gasp* Sony would have some degree of rights to the CD add-on they were developing for the SNES. Nintendo did the unthinkable and screwed over a fellow Japanese company.

Think of the Playstation as karma for what Nintendo did.

Nintendo would love to have a guy like Ken Kutaragi because he was, and still is, brilliant when it comes to developing hardware. The failure of the PS3 is the fault of Sony's current CEO, Howard Stringer, and it is unfortunate that Ken had to be the public scapegoat for what should have been a successful system.

Says who? The DS and Wii are tests for the market. Do you think Nintendo would just pull a 180 for no reason and abandon its reputation for technologically advanced hardware?

Having more overall processing power is not indicative of final outputted power. You, or all posters, should realize the value that comes from having a complete package, and not just a faster processor (which was not made specifically for gaming to begin with). Like I said, the final graphical war between the two systems is far from over, and we may never have a definitive answer.

Also, you never said the architecture. You said the previous PS brands had no design flaws. It might not have been the architecture, but the PS2 did suffer a fatal design flaw. Who's decision plastic was, I have no idea, but someone made the wrong design choice.

I'm perrty sure Iwata knew that Ken was retirering, and gave a sarcastic response when ask about it.  When the repoerter didn't catch the sarcasm and told him about the special position he had.  Iwata just gave another sarcatic responce. You see its all in the timing of delivery, that makes it grand.

If you're going to talk about "outputted power" (which I assume means how well games actually perform) then you need to talk about about 8000 other factors that go into game development.  Kutaragi's job as system architect was to design a console that has the potential to perform, and he did his job well.

We're talking about Kutaragi here, I didn't think I needed to explicitly state that I was only talking about his contributions to Sony.

So what you're saying is that Nintendo plans to be a generation behind the tech curve?

Nintendo has made it abundantly clear that the Wii and the DS weren't meant to compete with its competitors in terms of hardware.

Slow down there. You stated Nintendo was going to step out of the technical race. What I stated is that they themselves have said they plan on supporting an HD console next generation, and a graphically powerful handheld successing the DS. Did I say anything about the DS and Wii being those? No. I said they were tests for the market. I know they have stepped out of the race for this generation, anyone who can't see that is in denial. From what you've said, you think they've completely abandoned technological leaps.

And you're first sentence makes no sense. An HD console could range anywhere in power, from a Wii that supports 1080p to a console rivaling the PS4 and Nextbox. I stated nothing about the power of their console, only of their handheld.

Ken doesn't exactly hold good blood with Nintendo. He was really pissed off when Nintendo screwed him over with the PlayStation addon for the SNES. The Japanese are very proud people, so I wouldn't expect Kuturagi to feel compelled towards the Nintendo camp.

First of all.. PSX and PS2 were the 2 faultiest systems to come out and their defect rate was far higher then anyone else's (360 is up for the challenge however... it seems)

PS2 had powerful hardware that never ever realized its potential because of its dumb design. GC was in every way better and was much cheaper. PS3 seems to be in the same situation... powerful stuff, but all locked away never to be used.

Sony got to where it was not by their hardware, but rather their business practices with developers and marketing. The Consoles themselves were horrible.Â
