If those games could have been done last gen they wouldn't have gotten perfect reviews.DireToad

not necessarily, it could all just be a question of polish

If Nintendo thinks that a lack of Mario and Zelda are the only reason people are angry, they clearly have no understanding of what the problem is.

mdisen

Exactly. If anything I'd find it more insulting for Nintendo to think that they can just throw a Zelda or Mario game in there like that will make everything better.

Why is an anti-Nintendo fanboy such as yourself so insulted by Nintendo? Perhaps because you want to be?

Because I'm a gamer. Yeah I don't like Nintendo. Or rather, I don't like what Nintendo has become with the Wii.
The DS is great, the GC was ok and the N64 was good.

But what Nintendo is doing now reflects and affects all of gaming. And I am bothered by it.

The only difference between the Gamecube and the Wii is that the Wii is successful. Nintendo is popular again = Nintendo hate. The Wii is on track to have a significantly better software lineup than the Gamecube ever had.

If you truly believe that the only difference between the GC and the Wii is sales then I don't know what to say.

please, inform me how so...

You are correct. Games have not changed at all since last generation. Only thing that has changed is visuals.

Sorry, if you feel that way and you don't see any other changes, I got nothing for you.

no, i didnt say it like it was a rhetorical remark.

im serious, how couldnt they be done last gen?

i have GTA4 and MGS4, besides the graphics, i dont see what couldnt have been done last gen.

but im willing to change my opinion if you show me something i havent noticed about those games...

Not positive on the AI in MGS4 as I haven't tried it yet, but the framework under GTA IV (AI, animations, physics (body and object) and the much more persistant assets would not have been possible on older hardware.

Mass Effect could probably have been done on older systems.

with GTA4, although i agree a little on the physics part, it seems like they sacrified that for pop-ups and framerate dips... or maybe thats just how my 360 version is

i think their goal is farther than their reach. just like Hideo Kojima said, "the hardware this gen is not ready for a 'real next gen' game"... or somewhere along those lines

i can see hardcore gamers here in SW are very different from those from the other boards who just love and enjoy games and don't care about this kinds of arguments. I think hardcore gamers here in SW!=hardcore gamers in the outside world and maybe hardcore gamers in SW==fanboys!=fans. Besides, the wii is getting many great games such as Mad World, Fatal Frame IV,etc. How one still whine and whine about this stuff i really wonder. I must think he must really be blind and stupid.

Oblivion? GTA4?Dead Rising? I'm no lemming, guess they could throw some more in there. :P

And when you talk about "severe graphical down-grade" are we talking about so severe it starts to impact on gameplay?

stvee101

no im not talking about affecting the gameplay, i havent played GTA 4 nor dead rising.

As for oblivion could last gen consoles create an oblivion type game?

the answer is yes

Gimped to the detriment of the gameplay imo. Fog was really bad in places.

maybe so, but everything else was there wasnt it? and yes the game had fog i wouldnt say to the point of detrimating the gameplay

Read the bolded statement. Yeah the wii is already having more mature games than GC could have (NMH, MadWorld, FF IV, etc.), the wii released its big guns from nintendo on its first and a half year (SMG, MP3, SSBB,etc.),etc.

They thought true gamers and true Nintendo fans understood that they don't show major "core" games at E3 anymore.

Anyone who is mad at Nintendo's E3 is basically saying "I don't follow the news about Nintendo"

There's no other way around it

Reggie quite clearly built up to the fact that there would be "announcements from our key franchises for core gamers that will be out in 2008" at E3.

I don't care about games being mature. I care about games being good.

Take a look at the Wii's library. Remove all the VC games and last gen ports and take a look at it.
Now look at the Gamecube's library.

Don't tell me they're the same thing. The Wii has a long way to go before it reaches the GC's software quality and it's not with Wii Music or a half assed Spore version that it will get there.

You know things are bad for the Wii when I'm praising the GC's library in comparison.

your statements are ILLOGICAL meaning contradictory. The Gamecube's life has ended and the wii's life hasn't yet. The wii is still getting games and it's still far away for this gen to be over. If you want to be LOGICAL, compare the GC's life that is equivalent to the wii's life right now. I think it's almost 2 years.

Compare any current gen console with the GCN's library. The GCN has been out for alot longer, if you could compare from time of release, that would make sense.

Plus the GCN does have more Gamespot GOTYs(3) then any other console, so it's library isn't exactly terrible....

Don't you think I know that the Wii still has years left?

I'm not saying just look at the numbers. I'm saying look at the types of games. Look at the THIRD PARTY GAMES. Look at everything and then tell me the Wii and the GC are the same.

They're clearly not.
And as for filtering the GC's library down to the second year or so... I don't have time for that... Right now.

I dont know why they didnt just announce Pikmin 3 at the conference and not like 10 minutes after, also a quick 10 second CG trailer for new Zelda would of sufficed imo.

EDIT: Personally, I think Nintendo should bring back one of their older IP's, Star Fox, Kirby, Donkey Kong.

Umm I do own a PS3 and 360 so my hardcore needs are met. I just wish nintendo would wave their hands and say "we do have more core games coming" it would have made them look good at E3. Instead they are getting smashed by everyone.

Well, to look on the bright side, at least we can say for sure that Nintendo is acutely aware that core gamers are severely disappointed. Of course they've always been asked about core games, but after E3, just about every interview with Nintendo higher-ups had the question of core games come up at some point.

I suppose now we just have to wait and see whether Nintendo is actually going to act on this criticism, because they're clearly not oblivious to it.

This is another thing that bothers me about Nintendo loyalists. They don't give enough credit to Nintendo.
They actually believe Nintendo when they say things like this like they hadn't planned for it to happen.

This is Nintendo for god's sake. They've been in the business since the 80s and they haven't left it since.
They know what they're doing. Everything they do is thought out and planned. You know, like a normal corporation.

Everything they did at E3 was planned. There was no "it didn't go as planned". Every video they showed, every person that talked, everything was planned. Nintendo wanted to do E3 the way they did it.

And now they're giving us sad excuses after the fact, excuses that were probably planned before E3 as well.

Yet you've got the sheep hanging on every word Nintendo says, telling us that we should have faith in Nintendo, or that they deserve some slack like they didn't know what they were doing at E3 and it was all a big booboo.

I've always thought this but to me sheep are the most unbelievable (as in "not to be believed") of all fanboys because they have this sort of unhealthy emotional relationship where Nintendo can do and say no wrong because the NES and the SNES were awesome childhood consoles.

I've always thought this but to me sheep are the most unbelievable (as in "not to be believed") of all fanboys because they have this sort of unhealthy emotional relationship where Nintendo can do and say no wrong because the NES and the SNES were awesome childhood consoles.

I'm confused.....when did Nintendo say that their E3 press conference was an accident or didn't go as planned?

OMG

"We're sorry" aka.....we misjudged how big of a negative reaction we would get from showing nothing.

mjarantilla

Even then, how could you not show anything and somehow be "surprised" at the negative reaction. Gimme a break...

Why else would they apologize or give us excuses for it then?
Why would they feel the need to apologize if they thought they did a great job at E3?

Because they thought they did a great job at E3 for their main audience, but thought that they didn't do such a great job for their secondary (but still large, and very vocal) audience? Considering that both audiences are almost mutually exclusive of one another, too.

I believe the usual cliche here is, choosing the lesser of two evils, i.e. pissing off the lesser of two audiences.

I think your post perfectly describes why so many people are disappointed with Nintendo right now.

Here's the thing about using subjective terms like "so many": you don't know in what context to take it.

If the "so many people" you're talking about are mostly "hardcore" gamers like the ones scouring boards like this, then I'd say that they are irrelevant and Nintendo was right in holding the kind of press conference they did. If you listen to the "hardcore" on any issue, progress will stop. On the other hand, if people across the spectrum were disappointed, that's another story, but I highly doubt that's the case.

To be fair, in the same way, you don't know how many others might be disappointed/not disappointed either. It's just hard to have a good gauge on it, unless some other outlets that don't exclusively cover gaming or there's some type of survey done to non-core gamers about how they felt about Nintendo's E3. I dunno.

I'm pretty sure they don't care.

Not even gamers care that much about the E3 press conferences. Places like this inflate the importance of such events way past their actual significance.

Oblivion? GTA4?Dead Rising? I'm no lemming, guess they could throw some more in there. :P

And when you talk about "severe graphical down-grade" are we talking about so severe it starts to impact on gameplay?

st1ka

no im not talking about affecting the gameplay, i havent played GTA 4 nor dead rising.

As for oblivion could last gen consoles create an oblivion type game?

the answer is yes

Morrowinds world was not as large as oblivions, simply reducing graphics "which isnt just simply lowering some scale" would not make morrowind equal to oblivion.

Exactly. Every real gamer knows Nintendo fans can't play real games, they have to be dumbed down to where any moron could play. Sony is just as bad, they made the cgi cutscenes famous. Who wants to watch video games when you can play them?

Who wants to play games when you can send your bricked 360 in for repairs and look at the back of your game cases!?

I think you can count Neoguru in those ranks. Either that or he's EXTREMELy immature for his age.

So does a batch of 13 year olds that watch Heat or The Godfather, or Resivor Dogs ultimatly dismiss those movies as imature?

Nintendo hasn't had a huge 3rd party supported system since the SNES, when there was hardly any competition. Nintendo has always been good for great first party games and some rare 3rd party hits. If you want the multiplats and 3rd party games, then go out and get a 360/PS3.

They thought true gamers and true Nintendo fans understood that they don't show major "core" games at E3 anymore.

Anyone who is mad at Nintendo's E3 is basically saying "I don't follow the news about Nintendo"

There's no other way around it

Jaysonguy

If they don't announce their core games at E3, where do they announce them? Because there haven't exactly been a lot of core game announcements between E3 2007 and E3 2008.

Face it, sheep, your holiday 2008 lineup has been announced, and there's really not a lot there. Those third-party games had better come out on time, or my Wii is going to be gathering dust this winter.

Leipzig, TGS, E for All, GDC is where most game announcements are.

I expect them to release games for the core gamer at something FOR the core gamer.

E3 is not for the core gamer, it's not for ANY gamers. They changed E3 all around and Nintendo was the only one paying attention. Because of that they picked the perfect strategy last year with Wii Fit to get media coverage and they follow up the same direction this E3.

You completely missed the point! The medium isn't immature, the audience who consumes it for the sole purpose of making themselves seem "cool and hardcore" are immature. In movies, it's what I like to call the "Scarface Effect"

I remember. Nintendo had the 3rd party market almost by default, and the only other competition was Sega, who had even less support in their heyday than Nintendo does now.

BTW, because I mentioned Sega in this post, expect to see Panzer_Zwei in this thread within 3 minutes.
