So is this a realistic and thoughtful thing Patcher said? I don't know. It sounds like another prediction that's doomed to fail. Sega stopped making consoles, but that's an entirely different story.

At this point, I don't care about Nintendo anymore. They used to be my solid secondary console of choice but since they went all motion control crazy, I haven't cared for them.

I think they can survive off of handheld gaming alone, but it'll be a shame to not see their talents being pushed to the max on a console.

They're really trying to make sure the WiiU is a success by trying to release as many quality games as possible. That's the way I see it. They don't want to discontinue the console, but add more quality things into the system. Not just games (i.e Mario Maker)

Nah, they'll be fine. Just wait untill next gen and make a more powerful console. Just as good as the competition, if not better.

Wii U can survive, or at least last, on exclusives until then. Enough to be profitable for Nintendo.

While I see that as a possibility, it's not something they need to do in the immediate future, I'd even say they have at least another console generation to look forward to.

I think Nintendos model is on the way back. He states that Nintendo is ten years behind the curve, but the curve is already half way down the shitter. Even though sales say otherwise, it is the xbox and playstation models that are on the way out. The younger crowd will grow up and see all the bullshit these companies throw around. First on, only on, best on, exclusive content, timed exclusive, day one dlc, subscriptions, subscriptions upon subscriptions, hd remakes, etc. That train of marketing is on the way. Nobody wants that. "The most advanced hardware on the planet?" Money will pay developers to make some show stopping, best visual games, but that will only last for X amount of time before it is the content that matters.

Ironic how people said, and continue to say, that the wiiu is garbage yet it is the only console that has released great games, shows more great games and releases these games, and then shows what is on the horizon. They don't give these ball fondling answers like Sony and Microsoft.

I'd be happy to buy Nintendo peripherals if they want to go PC only. Hook up with steam and provide some gimmicky devices. I'll buy them if they are amusing enough.

Its hard to say the Playstation is on the way out when its the fastest selling console "EVER". Nintendo makes great games they always have but there hardware sucks . Sony has loads of quality exclusives coming and when you factor in third party support the PS4s library will stomp all over the Wii Us by the beginning of next year. The Xbox brand has been regulated to a PC port box yet again but at least the hardware isnt a complete laughing stock.

I think its funny Nintendo fans get so mad about the posibility that they may not make hardware forever. It could be a disaster if they focuesed on Mobile phones and tablets. But imagine what a new Zelda or Metroid would be like on the PS4 without the contraints of hardware that should have been released in 2005.

This is horse crap. wii u is not the only console with games. its the only consoles with exclusive games - and that's all the morons on SW cares about.

But in the real world, third parties drive the industry. third parties are what made gaming mainsteam. The playstation made gaming mainstream, then the ps2 after that and the highest selling games were third party.. it was third parties that drove those systems and continue to drive the industry, selling 10-20-30 million copies per game and reaching many audiences... aside from the wii gimmick, nintendo consoles have always sold like crap - 20-30 million only for the n64, gc and even less for the wii u... it is time they wake up because their games could be some of those 20 million sellers if they put them on better hardware

Nintendo always has many different possible roads to choose from; Patcher always likes to talk about the road that goes into the wall.

Not butthurt at all. I've got a ps4. Was hyped for it like a lot of other people. It is the worst console I've ever owned. It really isn't even a game console anymore. It is just a pc in a small box. The games are drmd. The physical discs aren't even really physical discs, but more like authorization codes. What people seem to forget is that Nintendo has been in business for a REALLY long time AS A GAMES COMPANY. This is what they survive on. Pull up earnings over the last 20 years. Let's see which company made the most money. Let's look at which company(division) has the most money in the bank. Of all the console manufacturers out there it is Nintendo that is MOST LIKELY to continue developing hardware. Their hardware and software development is really just one thing. Releasing their own hardware allows them to keep quality up.

Because Nintendo is strictly a games company, releasing a really high spec console at a loss at this current time--with how wii slightly diminished the brand in some eyes--would have been very risky.

Nah, Nintendo just needs to combine their handheld and console together into one product. The successor to the New 3DS should be at least 720p and playable on the big screen.

No one really buys Nintendo systems for power anymore (just the opposite of Sony systems), so the fact that they still make home consoles at all is honestly a bit redundant. That said, the 3DS is far too low resolution to be an effective games console even if the games were playable on TV. With the Tegra K1 mobile graphics have finally caught up to last gen systems, so Nintendo should have no problem integrating a Wii U-level chip into their next portable system.

Gamers are already treating Nintendo as 3rd party.

Buying their consoles ONLY for the 1st party and buying everything else on other systems.

Sony as a whole has been in trouble. They must be privately funded somehow. Perhaps something to do with design patents....i don't know.

Sure but the PS4 is an amazing success already, it's not going to die. Even if it had to be spun off as a separate business (unlikely). When companies go out of business, that doesn't mean their valuable assets die.

Sony and MS will end up being streaming services before long, and their services will be on Nintendo's consoles. Pachter got it wrong. Nintendo will have the last console standing.

If the quality of software remains intact, Nintendo should stop making hardware and go multiplat.

Yep, pretty much this, right now there isn't that many reasons to get a PS4 or an Xbox One, specially not after most third parties are going PC too, look at MGS5, arguably the biggest third party franchise, sure, PS4 will have some amazing exclusives, mostly by Naugthy Dog, but as of now, i'm extremely happy with my PC+WiiU+PS3.

I don't know. VR could open up possibilities for new kinds of games, and Nintendo may see some opportunity there when/if the time is right. They have expressed interest in VR before, I mean, long after Virtual Boy which was way before VR tech was ready.
