@speak_low: Even if all you say is going to happen in the next three years, It far more likely for Nintendo to be bought out or be acquired in a merger. If they go bankrupt, then their IPs gets auctioned off and depending on the buyer, ends up as third party IPs.

For as much as Nintendo holds my interest with only a few games (that happen to be from franchises 30+ years old......*yawn*), I really don't care what they do hardware wise. That's irrelevant at this point and should be the least of their worries. Nintendo's nigh irrelevant to me, their games are always quality in craftsmanship but are otherwise pure routine and by the numbers in passion. A sad decline from their past.

He's right about Nintendo. There is interest in the content but not the home console hardware.

"B-b-b-bu-but wh-wha-what about the 3DS sales!"

Yeah, what about them? Nintendo is selling 3DS and still reporting heavy quarterly losses, and the company is witnessing their worst losses in history. It's not surprising that these miserable results coincide with Nintendo selling their worst-selling home console ever (Wii U), along their worst-selling handheld ever (3DS). Something has really changed these last few years and Nintendo (the insular, blind and dopey company that thinks they know everything) has been caught off guard.

The handheld market is irreversibly shrinking worldwide and they are losing mountains of cash fast. And worst of all, consumers and developers have turned their backs on the Nintendo home console, and some are not coming back.

So what is Nintendo going to do for next-gen? Take an even bigger financial risk and make a super-powerful console that is not guaranteed to sell well? It could attract more third-parties back, but it could also sell much worse than PS4/X1 and just put Nintendo deeper into the hole and lose billions more.

I think Pachter was being nice. He meant to say, "They're fu**ed, man!"

Sheep probably don't think the scenario is that grim. But then Iwata announces this new, expensive QOL project, when they are already losing considerable money and have had to lay off workers in Europe. Do you really think these are the actions of a company doing well? So Nintendo is in zero financial trouble now?

And console launches are not like our lovely springtime seasons where every tree displays beautiful renewal, and every bad ache and memory is forgotten and we start over fresh again. Nintendo is witnessing (with the exception of the Wii/DS years) huge contraction each generation (losing followers and sales), and it's eventually coming to a choking point - and this may be the critical fork in the road where Nintendo has to decide to either take one last gamble or go third-party.

How do you know QOL is expensive to R and D? I don't think QOL will have crazy costs, but it will have a moderate R and D most likely.

Exactly. This is why we see nintendo specifically going after that crowd. Not only that but if I remember correctly the Dreamcast was the most successful product launch IN HISTORY.

Pachter has been saying this basically since WiiU was released. And from business point of view it kinda makes sense. But Pachter has also said several times that he doesn't understand Nintendo.

Patcher can go suck his own cock as he always does.

3DS selling 40 million in about half its lifespan and Nintendo should quit hardware?

Seriously, the 3DS has the largest instal base of all current gen platforms...and THEY should quit hardware? C'mon this is just getting pathetic...

Analysts are wack and think they can predict the future..haha funny

Pachter is reliably always wrong, so this article is good indication that Nintendo should focus more on hardware.

It doesn't take a genius to see this.

If it wasn't for the Wii being a huge hit with casual gamers last generation, Nintendo might have already gone the route of just strictly making software.

The Wii U is a failure. I don't even see how you could attempt to argue other wise. There are tons of people out there who aren't even aware of its existence and it launched 2 years ago.

Nintendo caught lightning in a bottle with the gimmicky Wii, but that's not going to happen again. The Wii U can't compete with the PS4 or the XBone and who honestly thinks that's going to change when the next generation rolls around in 5-7 years?

The Wii U could very well be Nintendo's last console.

What a load of complete nonsense. Nintendo hasn't been dominating for quite some time. Wii was a blip fueled by casual gamers but if Nintendo went the industry would roll on same as before.

Wiiu will pick up sales. It will continue to sell as more and more games arrive. Not that the xbox and ps4 won't do that, but most people that want a ps4 already have one or will buy one within the next year as the real software arrives.

Wiiu is sort of a transitional console. Where the wii was the ultimate success in sales, it also diminished the nintendo brand in the eyes of a lot of gamers. Nintendo somehow tried to please both crowds with the console. The non-gamer ultimate casual crowd that ran out to buy the wii likely aren't factoring into the wiius sales. I don't know how many wiius have been sold but i'd guess that most are from core gamers that also play on the other platforms. In this way it is a success as the games that nintendo has been releasing speak for themselves.

i think the full quote from pachter was that games would only be delivered from the cloud in the next 10 years or so and that nintendo would be in a position to deliver such a service because there around 10 years off the pace. The original source:

http://venturebeat.com/2014/09/05/the-deanbeat-a-microcosm-of-mobile-games-reveals-the-coming-death-of-the-consoles/

so basically he thinks the PS5 and X2 will be more akin to the little onlive console since the games will be delivered like onlive gaikai. nintendo wont be able to do this.

he is right in that nintendo wont be in a position to stream their games. in this area being 10 years off the pace is a generous remark. i would put it closer to 15 years (though they probably have learned some lessons from the wiiu since that can stream games to the controller).

if he is right though then it looks like a truly dreadful future for everyone. streaming games like onlive? no more games being played on your own hardware? you have to be kidding me....it would be beeping woeful.

still if thats the way things are to go (and its pachter...so its probably way off the mark :P) then nintendo could let the other services run on their console. MS and sony would want to do this as the more devices they can get their streaming service on the better for them. any mini console they make would be used as a delivery mechanisim only. ideally they would prefer not to make any hardware at all (except maybe a controller).

still....a woeful future for gaming if he is right. *shudder*.

thats useless....the only reason to do that is to appease 3rd party...mario 3d world, mario kart 8, smash would all look the same at 1080p

nintendo has to throw out an olive branch to 3rd party. and the hardware would be a branch.

however i dont think nintendo will give in to them. nintendo will try to survive on their own.

So is this a realistic and thoughtful thing Patcher said? I don't know. It sounds like another prediction that's doomed to fail. Sega stopped making consoles, but that's an entirely different story.

Hm, has Patcher ever been right before?? Have any of his predictions come true?? Because he says that Nintendo is more than 10 years behind console trends. I don't know.

Patcher have been on the spot several times to be honest. Sometimes way off too.

Nintendo is in a tough position as we speak. The main issue is that it seems they cant get those franchises into the new era of gamers as they did with older generations. Quality of their main franchises is still high but it seems are not as appealing as they were many years ago , specially for newcomers into video gaming.

That leads to serious problems. Die hard / nostalgic fans are not THAT many to be able to sustain Nintendos profitability. Missing major 3rd party support also doesnt help at all when 9 out of 10 new age gamers all they know is .. GTA / COD / BF / LoL / WoW and repeat.

I think it's far more likely Microsoft would exit the console hardware business before Nintendo. Nintendo still has mountains of cash, and they're much too proud to submit to demands from investors, or anyone else for that matter. Microsoft on the other hand, isn't tied to gaming or gaming hardware. They could thrive without that aspect to their business. If they continue to lose money on the Xbox brand, they will dump it.

That would only leave Sony basically and that could be bad. Nintendo is getting killed because they refuse to adapt to the gaming market.

As patcher said they are way behind the curve. Nintendo has no new megaton western based IP's and their network is the worst by far. Their hardware sucks and is missing most of the standard features but only cost 100 bucks less than a ps4. I grew up on Nintendo but I am not a kid and the games they make have lost their appeal. My taste have changed and Nintendo stayed the same.

Not sure if the leadership can change. They had their pay slashed 3 years in a row and they still can't get it right. If that is not a wake up call shit what is ???

Elaborate on this curve. Because where things are is fucking terrible. What features is the wiiu missing, really? It is a game console. All that bloated bullshit on ps4 is just fucking ridiculous. i think if nintendo wants to remain relevant they should just count their losses with the wii u and focus on their next console release. It should be called Super Nintendo 2 (which shows that they are serious about this) and the box should atleast be more powerful than the ps4 . Nintendo has become too predictable. We can already predict what the next games for the next system will be. Rehashed zelda/ Rehashed Mario Kart/ Rehashed SmashBros/ and some mario bros rehash. Rinse repeat till kingdom come. Dead formula is dead

Now obviously they shouldn't completely abandon the wii u, thats not what I am suggesting...They still have to make some games for it to not disappoint wii u customers. But if they think they are magically going to shoot ahead of their competition with a biblical type of miracle they are sorely mistaken. The WII U is a flop.

It still updates all the time, which was supposed to happen in the background, and the OS eats up half the damn memory.

The faults of the wii u and the lack of features are on the net all you have to do is look.

I own a wiiu and a ps4. The ps4 is a much bigger hassle. Also, Mario Kart 8 online is really really good. Some of the most stable console online I've ever played. I just don't see the faults. PS4 has more.

@ConanTheStoner:

I'm thinking that anything he is good at has nothing to do with gaming.

I think he might have made comment on his lack gaming knowledge before, but im too lazy to find it.

I just personally wasn't sure about who Patcher was. But now I know he is just spewing rumored BS to say it bluntly.

I kept hearing about Patcher this and Patcher that, but it seems to me that deep down inside he is anti Nintendo. Would I be correct?

I wouldn't say he is anti-Nintendo or any company. The guy is an analyst, he gets paid to observe market trends, and give predictions on the performance of items in his respected field. Though video gaming is not his field of expertise last I heard, many people still come to him and ask his opinion on the matter. He just gives a response based on where he sees the market heading.

Mos of the time those predictions are wrong.

Whilst I'm not a Nintendo fan, I sincerely hope they don't exit the hardware market in the future... The industry will be worse for it.
