I'm not sure what the cost is or what I'm buying yet. If I see value with what they are offering I will perchace... if I don't I'll pass.
I typically don't play nintendo games online, so if I'm paying just to mp it's an easy pass.
Online Paywalls have no value , let alone this one
No one will disagree with you on that.
That said, I am willing to pay up to $30 USD a year to play my Kart, Smash, Splatoon, Animal Crossing, Fire Emblem, and Pokemon online.
I agree it should be free. So should Sonys and Microsofts.
However people (me included) are stupid enough to pay for it so they will charge for it.
All online should be free, but we're a little too late for that.
all of them should be free, but especially Nintendo's because their focus on online has always seemed lesser to me
+1 , Yes that's the spirit , don't pay a fuc--king cent

Yep, they should all be free. Agreed.
All online should be free, but we're a little too late for that.
Yup.
Though at least in the case of PSN and XBL, they can half ass justify it. Some effort is put into these services. And if you happen to enjoy some of the "free" games they offer, you could even rationalize it as the service paying for itself.
I don't care for them personally, but I can see how others find enough value in them.
Nintendo? No, I don't see them offering something worthwhile, at least not early on. And I wouldn't be surprised if they try to charge higher fees than the competition. Because Nintendo.
@the_master_race: For Smash Bros id pay up to $50 a year.
Jesus ! how about buying a game from steam instead ?
Agreed, especially if Nintendo games are the only ones that will have robust online gameplay features.
Paying for basic online multiplayer is ugly across the board. GWG and PS Now should be all about the games subscriptions.
For me, it depends. If they are investing that money back into the network to try and build out features and compete with Sony and Microsoft and their online offerings, then I'm more apt to do it. If they are just tossing a subscription fee on there just simply because the other guys have it, then no, not a chance. Also, it all depends on the games for me. If they are fun and have a good, stable online network to fall on, then I'll spend money for an online network.
While I don't know what the cost will be yet I find the fact that Nintendo is only going to let you keep the games they offer for free on it for a month pretty insulting. They need to let you keep them for at least as long as you subscribe to the service. Right now there are only two Nintendo games that I am interested in playing online and those are Mario Kart and Smash Bros. I'm not sure how much I'm willing to spend just to play those online though. I'm fine with spending money to play online for Microsoft's service because I find it to be a quality service and I continually get great free games and sales. Nintendo is going to have to really step up their online offerings to compare.
Every online service should be free. Its not like the other 2 give us anything worth a crap. No joke, i had less problems with free PSN on the ps3 than PS+ on the ps4.
Free online was always going to be unsustainable though - yes, Nintendo offered some great online experiences that were free (say via Mario Kart or Splatoon) - but there was no way they were ever going to strengthen and diversify their online offerings without a revenue line to support it. If they throw in some free games and special discounts here and there, and if that balances up well against the price of entry, then it will be worthwhile.
I won't be paying for the online service. I'll leave that to my pc gsmes for free. I do imagine everyone who buys Splatoon 2 will be paying though.
@the_master_race: The problem is they can't compete with that model anymore. They need third party support to survive and one of the major stumbling blocks for getting those games is Nintendo's garbage online. Having said that, I wasn't gonna pay for Nintendo online from the Gek-Go! I only play Nintendo single player almost my life. I totally agree that while Steam provides a good online service and charges nothing for it. So paying for "quality online" makes no sense when it can and is done for free but this is just saying that Nintendo wanted to charge folks just to proves they get behind 3rd party support.

thats really steep for one game just to play online...
I remember when Nintendo fanboys mocked Sony and MS for online subscriptions. Look how's that turning out now!
@jcrame10: Yes sir. Me and my Discord homiez cant be stopped.
Discord?
Its what we use to keep up with the community no matter where we are. Can use on your phone or PC. Its the future.
All of the three should be for free.
EVERY online service should be free
Sadly, that time has passed. It worked for one and now all will adopt it.
It is hilarious they are charging for online when voice chat and matchmaking are handled through a phone app. Switch doesn't have 3rd party support either so online games are already limited on the system too. No Overwatch, Battlefield, CoD, Destiny, Rainbow Six, GTA Online, Madden, NBA or any of the other popular games people play. And games like Smash and Kart are more fun to play locally than online anyway.
@NathanDrakeSwag: We got NBA2K and FIFA which will be fun. And Smash and Mario Kart are awesome online, you can play with people all around the world. Then we got Splatoon, o man. Too much goodness.

Last gen versions of those games and lol at McToon.
@NathanDrakeSwag: They still make good additions to Nintendo Domination. Theyll help Nintendo makes good money off their service. Every bit counts.
I already have it pre-ordered but I'm already [slightly] regretting it... hearing that Nintendo's online service will utilize your cell phone w/an app for voice chat is utterly ridiculous. F*king 2017 and they STILL CAN'T get their online infrastructure in order.. smdh.
I thought everyone would know this was going to happen soon, and with a new console coming this seemed like the time. I have no issues paying if it provides good value. I am happy about it actually, for now anyway, it should mean that Nintendo gets their crap together and makes a decent online infrastructure, if they don't, that's when I will be jumping in the "F@ck you Nintendo" bandwagon with the rest of you.
The only way the service will get better is if people pay for it.
People can say whatever they want about Microsoft and Sony charging for their service, but it seems like a very obvious reason why their services are so much stronger. I'm not sure which comes first the money or the quality, but Microsoft has always charged for their online and it has always been good. It's evolved over time and Sony has followed suite. Nintendo never did, and the service is pretty bad now.
I'm not a fan of paying for usage of the Internet, but it's a model that is tough to argue against (not to mention impossible, because there's nothing that can be done) at this point.
