ok so you are like, there are tons of games that run on 1080 resolution right now.

right but none of those games are winners of Best Graphics awards. so i'm talking about AAA games here.

incoming games like modern warfare 2, which easily has the biggest hype, is running at 600p resolution, not even 720 which is the minimum for HD. so playing that game in a standard TV would be fine, no need for 50" 1080p plasma.

why do games do this? well if you play PC games, you know turning up the resolution usually has the biggest impact on performance, shaders sometimes top it.

so for game developers to push better graphics out of consoles which have non-changing hardware they can only do few things. make better graphic engines, or lower the resolution of the game.

now the graphics engine will always improve since thats based on optimizations of code. so games will generally always keep looking better as time passes for the same hardware, so in the future, a game that looks like MW2 could be run at 1080p on the same console with enough optimizations to the engine. but when that happens, a game that looks 2x better will come out at a lesser resolution, though its not as sharp or crisp.

anwyays, the point im making with this topic is, game developers usually never hit the resolution cap when making games so long as their goal is to provide a great looking game with good performance. so even next gen consoles wont provide the top resolution if they try to make the best looking game. that sucks for 1080p tv owners like myself.

here are some games to show what i mean. take note that most games do run at 720p. this topic is saying that no AAA games are going to run at 1080p ever :( should of just bought a 800$ cheaper 720p tv.

PS3

Bioshock = 680p
Call of Duty 4 = 600p
Call of Duty: World at War = 600p
Ghostbusters = 540p
Grand Theft Auto IV = 640p
Prototype = 640p
Ratchet & Clank: Tools of Destruction = 704p
Saint's Row 2 = 640p

Xbox360

Bionic Commando = 640p
Conan = 576p
Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion = 600p
Far Cry 2 = 696p
Halo 3 = 640p
Ninja Gaiden 2 = 585p

so if you are planning on buying a 1080p screen JUST for playing games, don't do it! save the money and with it buy more games! but if you have a ps3 and plan on watching blu-ray movies, then stay with the 1080p tv since bluray renders at that reso.

oh and in case this isnt really starting any debate for system wars ill just say that PC rocks since with a good graphics card, you can run any game at 1200p resolution with 60 FPS on max settings, which consoles will never do. muahaha

Resolution is only one part of the graphical prowess as a whole, 1080p would not be preferable on the PS3 and 360 due to their lack of power, it's really a power issue if naything else and you have to balace resolution but also HRD, Lighting., Models and texture quality. I prefer games to be SuB HD if that makes them run at a more solid FPS.

You have a point, but i still believe next gen 1080p will be standard. Just like this gen most games have a better res than last gen ones.

errr...there are NO HD games this gen. wtf is a sub-HD? back in the day, do they call it sub-SD? lol. it's either HD, or no HD. this gen, there's no HD. all games are not HD-native. i think next-gen 720p should be the minimum. definitely better than SD, but not HD. meh. what's with all the hype this gen, then?

Wipeout runs at native 1080p and 60 frames per second, the Ps3 is the only console with the row power to achieve such a splendid display. PlayBeyond.

I agree that people should save a few hundred dollars and get a 720p tv. Even if 1080p is next gen, it's not worth it.

It's all up to devs to decide how they would balance their game rendering between resolution, and quality with various settings, among them shaders, shadows, LOD, depth of field, post-processing and many others. It is a system limitation, and devs are encouraged to use their available and limited ressources to produce the best quality possible within the time allowance they have been allocated to make a game. This is why games like Killzone 2 (large dev times) can look so great even when only running at 720p, whereas other titles running in 1080p (Ninja Gaiden Sigma), do not necessarily look better (just richer textures, but plain, clean visuals). The PC platform, on the other hand, is limited only to the latest technology available on the market. Due to its "upgradable" nature, devs are not binded by system hardware limitations and can be as flexible as they want when it comes to visuals. Games like Crysis are an example of this. Of course, they have to account for the market they target, and if the specs are too high, they will limit their sales. Due to this, consoles become a more viable gaming option for gamers on a budget, as you know that you are playing the game at its targeted visual fidelity, and you are not limited by your current hardware, just that you are playing a "standardized format". These days, cards like the HD4850 or the GeForce 9800GT (mainstream budget cards) can run MANY current-generation games at 1080p (or higher), and can still afford some MSAA or QAA for measure. It is an undeniable fact that by next generation, 1080p will be standard. Games will no longer impress with textures or AA (the main benefit of higher resolutions), but in other aspects of the gameplay, key elements such as animations, motion-capture, physics, advanced AI,.and minute details such as facial expressions. This generation, consolites have always been waging the system wars based on graphics, but I'm calling it now that next generation, all games will run at 1080p, and graphics will take a backseat to the real meat of videogames : the gameplay experience itself.

Sub-HD is any resolution under 720p.

But over 480p It's that range between SD and HD.

There are HD games this gen, 1280x720 is 720p, and here's a list, though not a lot of them are 720p or higher.

well Sony Santa Monica Studios confirmed that GOW3 will run at 1080p, no loadtimes and perfect framerate I guess that doesnt count tho. BTW the game will be at 60fps most of the time, never dipping below 30, and will likely look better than uncharted, as both Naughtydog, insomniac, and Sony SantaMonica are working on both games.:D

There is no point in making 1080p games on consoles outside of sports, consoles cannot take advantage of the resolution.

People use higher resolutions to improve the clarity of visuals on screen, but visuals have to be reduced significantly on fixed hardware platforms to accommodate that resolution. A 1080p game would be uglier than a 720p game, it would just have a cleaner image.

Seeing how we share most games across platforms these days; I'd appreciate if consoles didn't dumb down visuals any further than they need to.

No it doesn't, it runs in both native 1080p (1920x1080) when very little is going on and downscaled 1080p (1280x1080) when the screen has to much going on, it's a fantastic system and i wish more games used a setup like this.

If there is one thing i regret this gen is buying my 1080p screen, i bought mine purely for my PS3, i love it for Blu-rays BUT i have a love/hate thing with it for gaming, sure lots of games still look great but it's such a waste to have a 1080p screen and have hardly any games that really take advantage of it.

For the same reason many games fail to even achieve the 720p "standard" this generation.

Standards like these hold back tweaking every scrap of performance out of consoles they can, they drop below these promised standards so they can push their games that little bit further.

People demanding 1080p in every game next gen don't realize what a strain that puts on games.

Let's worry about getting to 720p before we get to 1080p. I don't care regardless, I am not a huge graphics whore, but the games look fine on my HDTV, so I'm ok with it. I've not had a game taht really gave me any problem.

Its quite strange considering my laptop can run fallout 3, bioshock and COD4 at 1080p with 2xAA at a steady 30fps. I definitely think next gen all/most games will be 1080p native. Even Wii2 or whatever they'll call it.

For the same reason consoles struggle with it now, all the resources are being eaten by present quality standards.

You could get 1080p/60fps in every game right now, but the graphics would be much lower compared to 720p/30fps.

exactly, its not that the games cant run at 1080p with 60fps. its that if it does, it suffers greatly in terms of graphics. thats why next gen is no different in my eyes.

they will say... "now we will really make 1080p games with the PS4!" but then developers will be like.... eh we can only use pixel shader 6 and HDR lighting at 1080p and 60fps.... but if we lower it down to 600p at 30fps we can use pixel shader 7 and Ultra HDR 3 lighting!

so you see, it will always continue like that ^

Wipeout runs at native 1080p and 60 frames per second, the Ps3 is the only console with the row power to achieve such a splendid display. PlayBeyond.

PsP remakes are the real deal people.

mitu123
A remake of a PS1 game, you know Perfect Dark on XBLA runs in 1080p at 60 FPS, remake of a N64 game with updated graphics.

I was clearly Joking, The Ps3 version is almost the same game as the psp version with updated graphics and a few more tracks. :D

GT5 is ment to be 60fps 1080p although ill believe that when i see it Haha. PC's can have 2600x something or whatever it is.. which kinda begs the question will consoles ever catch up?

o0squishy0o
GT5: Prologue actually displayed at 1280x1024 in 1080p mode, at the cost of some anti-aliasing versus 720p mode. I suspect GT5 retail will follow that trend, call me crazy. I don't think it will be 1080p at 60 FPS, sorry to say.

Well my PC runs all my games(including Crysis at Ultra) at 1080p(42" Bravia) just fine at over 60FPS(Crysis at 45FPS). It'd be a shame if next gen consoles don't have better hardware than my PC.

[QUOTE="Cherokee_Jack"][QUOTE="GundamGuy0"][QUOTE="Cherokee_Jack"] Sub-HD is any resolution under 720p.

But over 480p It's that range between SD and HD.

AKA "Enhanced Definition".

I thought ED was 480p :?

The only thing holding back the games from running at 1080p native is that the 360's framebuffer is too damn small. Know those 10mb of eDRAM? Yeah If MS had put a 32mb chip there insted there would be no problem, they would have a system that would run 1080p with 2XAA free of charge. But insted if you want to run a frame that is 1080p, which is minimum 16mb in size, you have to split the frame up and run it through the buffer in parts and then put it back together. For the PS3 they use its RAM as framebuffer, this lets the devs have a bigger framebuffer, as big as they want and can run 1080 native, but the bigger you make it the less RAM you have for your game resorces (textures, MESH's etc) and thuse they don't do 1080p. So will we see native 1080p games next gen? Yes. Cause they will have learned that putting a big enough framebuffer in their system is the thing to do.

Anyone with even the slightest knowledge in PC hardware could have, from the very beginning of this generation of consoles, figured that neither a 7900 nor a X1900 GPU would be able to perform particularly well in games at resolutions higher than 720p for years to come. I think people (console gamers in general) are expecting a little too much from said GPUs when they go on and on about how "they could have optimized X title a bit more". A 256MB 7900 won't magically transform into a high-performing beast of a GPU with 2GB of VRAM just because you optimize a game to hell and back. People need to acknowledge this.

That's the resolution output; all games are upscaled/downscaled to that resolution depending on what their native resolution is. What we're talking about is native rendering resolution.
