For all those who hate on the Oblivion can I just ask one thing. What did you do in it? :?

Goyoshi12

I haven't played it, and quite frankly, it looks rather boring. Sure you have a big open world to do whatever you want, which sounds like fun, but at the same time, if there's not much of a main story or quest and its "do it yourself" I dunno....

Weird of how so many people seem to hate Oblivion. Yet it still has a user score on here of 9.3. :?

Strange. :|

starjet905

Oblivion was a huge game and a good one, for its time was the best you could get for some years too

It is just that gaming after Dark Souls has moved to whole new levels and the standards have changed today

Err, no. Dark Souls came out very recently, and the dislike for Oblivion (personal preference, mind you) has been existing for much longer.

Maybe since Demons Souls days, also games like Gothic 1-2, Arx Fatalis, Morrowind were far better than Oblivion too imo

I agree 100%, but I still think Elder Scrolls games are an acquired taste (simply, you either like it, or you don't). Still, I do find it amazing how it's the type of game that keeps me hooked for months (sometimes years) and doesn't even have a multiplayer portion.

What? It's a game where you can do whatever you want and you consider that bad? If the game is boring and you call it a "do it yourself"game then does that mean that YOU are boring since you have no imagination of what to do in a big game like that?

No not at all :? I ddi not say it was bad, I said "it sounds like fun but..." and I do have an imgaination and I'll ask you not to insult me over a stupid game.

Why? :? Just becasue people didn't like Oblivion? If its the same type of game, its almost a safe assumption to make that that person won't like Skyrim. Unless if Skyrim REALLY changes stuff up so that those who didn't like the previous entries in the franchise will like Skyrim, I don't think is presumptuous at all.

You're right, the amount of content this series gets from the community is mind boggling, far greater than even the likes of Mount & Blade (which has a giant modding community). You can literally play it for at least a couple of years, and due to a ton of free content, it really is the only game series that can give you the best bang for your buck. Ofcourse, i'm talking about single player games only. Can't say the same for the console versions, those are really irrelevant if you have a gaming rig.

Sorry Elder Scrolls haters but it's true....you haters can say it's boring, or too long or mach the combat system or whatever else you guy's usually complain about.

However you can't deny for the expensive price of $65.00 a game after tax, that the Elder Scrolls game's give you the most for your buck.

I mean c'mon what other game can you play for months and never do the same thing twice you mean all the copy pasted dungeons in Oblivion werent doing the same thing twice?, or have your choice of over 300 locations to explore more like 4 areas over and over again, with Oblivion at least. Morrowind (whose dungeons were extremely small, or Daggerfall which were randomly gneerated, or your choice of hundereds of quests most of them being terribly designed, not to mention the character choices like?, the attention to detail with the exception of Morrowind, Elder Scrolls has had terrible attention to detail wether it is the copy paste job in Oblivion or the Randomly generated world in Daggerfall and Arena, the natural change of weather from one area to the next does this affect gameplay or rather anything?, while day sets into night.

You can make your own health and magic potions and hunt your own food, and own a home in every major city, while obtaining lethal weapons, and magic spells to use on vicious creatures, animals and thieves of all walks of life.

You can speak with hundreds of different people, and join multiple guilds, do battle in arena's to earn gold, armor and weapons yet, what is the point because money has never been an issue in elder scrolls and with Oblivion, the rewards were utterly pointless since they are scaled to your level, plus there is no challange in any of the games .....all these features and more allow you to spend months and years getting lost in the massive world of Elder Scrolls, and no other game has that kind of variety, detail or longevity.

It's simply the best series ever made....I.M.O.

Slimmin360

Replies in bold

The Sims, Mount&Blade, Depths of Peril, Starcraft, Diablo, Warcraft, Harvest Moon, Rune Factory, any mmo, Minecraft, Terraria, X series (heck any space sim for that matter), Civilization, Total War, Stronghold series, Dwarf Fortress, Team Fortress, Counterstrike, Guild Wars and probably a whole lot of other games that I am missing would like to have a word with you.

Plus, as of recently, the series has just not been fun, so boring that while the 300 dungeons may be there, they are just not worth exploring.

The main story lore was actually kind of interesting but no I didn't feel particularly gripped with the main storyline. That said the guild questlines were slammed with stuff to do. The main problem with previous Elder Scrolls games is their copy and paste feel. However, Skyrim has a much larger dev team (like 8 dungeon designers vs Oblivion's 1) so hopefully there will be a lot more variety.

Oblivion... play for months and never do the same thing twice... Does not compute. In fact, I remember going into a cave that looked the same as the last cave 30 or more times. Yes, and petty thieves that somehow had Daedric Armor and Glass swords. How immersive. Oblivion sucked.

As much as I agree that it's brilliant and you get your moneys worth but I think Football Manager has more replayability.... I put 650 hours into the 2010 version.

Oblivion only took me 4 hours to complete the main quest, and another 10 to do all the guilds. Im sure there was more, but i didn't really enjoy it.

TC - you're partly right. The Elder Scrolls games do have a ton of content, and nobody can really deny that (although there are certainly more replayable games out there, with less repetition).

That doesn't make it a great series though. It just makes it a large one...which isn't saying all that much.

The Elder Scrolls games have the best bang per money unit. No other RPG even comes close to the depth and detail of TES.

LORD_BLACKGULT

I'd agree that the Elder Scrolls games tend to have huge amounts of content - probably not more than many other franchises, but they're up there in terms of value for money - but I'm going to have to completely disagree with this.

Many, many RPGs are much deeper and more detailed than the likes of Oblivion.
Oblivion was popular for having lots to do, and for being simple enough that any gamer could jump right into it - not for its elaborate combat system, mystifying stat-charts and complex web of in-game faction relationships (to say the least). It was popular because it *wasn't* deep.

As for detail, most of Oblivion felt copy-pasted. It didn't exactly feature many lovingly-crafted dungeons or strategicaly-placed enemies, and the environments were mostly bare and unexciting (although Morrowind was much better in that regard). The lore was there, but what fantasy RPG doesn't feature a few hundred tomes full of backstory?

Now, okay, some of the earlier games were deep and detailed, but as a whole the series hasn't exactly been consistent.

Based on some of the responses in this thread, it's safe to assume Skyrim is currently the "cool" game to hate.Xaero_Gravity

Oh sure, because there haven't been Oblivion hate threads popping up every month since 2006. :P

To bad the series is still medicore. And sad that modders to make it into a polished Turd since the developers can put effort to their games.

While I see Nintendo taking years to finish a Zelda game and not leaving it as a buggy game with content missing and with a broken combat.

Obviously in his opinion, Halo, Uncharted had more bang for the buck. Especially with the multiplayers of both (Trapjak is a fan of UC multiplayer, which is perfectly fine, no need to laugh at all). And the amazing campaign that he has most likely replayed through several times, having a blast each and every time.

LBP has a map editor and with new maps being available each day, I can see how that game offers a lot more bang for the buck than Elder Scrolls.

Zelda is so darn good you may want to replay it countless times.

Besides, I would rather explore the well crafted Hyrule and its well designed dungeons over Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivous' copy pasta overworld and dungeons.

Thanks, that was my main point of the post. You don't need the large, buggy mess of a map Oblivion has to have your money's worth . You can enjoy a 10-hour linear Indiana Jones clone , a game about an elf fighting a black guy, a robot fighting aliens, and fluffy toys running around stages, and still get that $60 worth.

TC, I agree with you. No single player game gives you more game time than TES.

However MP games like Diablo, Starcraft, Warcraft, League of Legends can provide 10,000 hours of entertainment and beyond, far more than games like Counterstrike, COD, Battlefield Halo etc.

I've spent probably 1000 hours in Oblivion (about 300, 250, 240, 200, 180, 160 and 60 hours among my characters) and I can easily see myself spending 300-400 hours with my first character, 200-300 with my second and 150-200 with my third in Skyrim.

To tell you the truth, the first Elder Scrolls I played was Morrowind. I have to say that was the worst RPG I have ever played in my life. The game throws me in the world with no explanation of what's going on and expects me to be a master at it. The combat system gave me no explanation of what to do, I'm hitting enemies and getting no damage output. Later on I find out that you have to go to some guy or skill sheet to level your sword skills. How was I supposed to know this if there is no tutorial within the game? When Oblivion came out a few years later, it was much better than Morrowind but it wasn't as outstanding as my friends hyped it up to be imo. Hopefully Skyrim will be 100 times better than the previous two games.

But the game isn't fun. What's the point a ton of replayability if none of it's fun?

To tell you the truth, the first Elder Scrolls I played was Morrowind. I have to say that was the worst RPG I have ever played in my life. thats what drew me in about morrowind. it was ugly(i played it on xbox) but i love how huge the world was and how i could do anything i wanted and had to figure everything out on my own. when oblivion came out my head damn near exploded the first time i left the sewers at the beginning. from everything i hear skyrim is waaaaay better than oblivion...and that gives me a chubby
