10 doesn't have to mean perfect.

I don't know what 10 means here or in other gaming sites.

Fondness

To me, it does.

Then what do you expect to actually get a 10? After all, a number is useless without an application.

In Gamespot history, there have been 4 other games that received a 10. Pro Skater 3 Chrono Cross Soul Calibur Ocarina of Time All except Soul Calibur were sequels. /threadchrth

1st off, the subject is a game with "4" at the end is not deserving

2nd.

well what this thread means is that if you play the past games then play the most recent , and you feel that nothing has really changed then a 10 is not deserving.

if you play a predicessors lets say zelda on the snes(i dought u have) you will see why oot got 10s or almost 10s at most review sites.

zelda for instance went into 3d for the 1st time with basically no flaws(well a few camera angles issues from what i remember from past reviews)

now with gta, i have played gta3 + vc and sa, vc and sa had nothing new gameplay wise except for a few new vehicles and side mission that brought noting to make the game more fun (for me at least and i know alot of others too)

not that i played gta4 but from what i've seen/heard the only thing thats really changed is the graphics, gamplay wise, nothing has really changed, sure the side missions some were added/improved due to having better graphics also a few unique missions added but the game itself is the same thing,

like the gs video review said at the end, "most of the new features in this one except for the cell phone dont add a whole lot to the core gameplay". in other words alot of useless stuff was added that to make the game look better but not play better.

this is why gta4 review by alot of people is a hoax. same game higher score...

gta is just a rehash that gets high scores to get all the "gangster" 10 year old happy.

No game, as a matter of fact.

While GTA4 is probable a great or even awesome game, I have to agree with this.
Though I'm gonna play it today at my friend's so I'll give my opinion later.

The gaming industry are a bunch of sheep, as soon as one publication gives a great score the rest fall in line afraid of ridicule. And no game with a 4 next to its name deserves a 10, how much of that game could possibly be original? The majority of it is repacked and rehashed but prettier. Also how does a game get a perfect score if it is not bug and error free? And you might say "well no game is bug free" exactly so why do they get 10's? ... Lastly most publications list visuals as a basis for scoring a game and if Say crysis, or GT 5 is the standard set within the industry this game in question deserves about a 7 in that category. SHEEP i tell you they're All SHEEP!!!!

Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess disagrees with you there. In fact, GS has been known to buck the trend quite often. I wasnt very hyped for GTA IV before, and I thought that GTA III was the best and always would be, but it looks like I might take a closer look at it now.

Saying that, I was disgusted with the hype for it, I honestly didnt see much from it either. But like I said, I'll have to have another look now. What really saddens me is the impending wave of justification for false, silly arguments like "mature games are teh best!!1!" or "where's your 10/GTA sheep?!" as though a single game is enough to make a difference. Before SW says anything, yes you are all that predictable.

This shouldn't be just about GTA, look at the games that were scored 10 on GS (tony hawk, really GS?). For me a game has to go above and beyond for a 10, be something we really haven't seen or experienced before. I haven't played it yet, unfortunately i have to work, but I will be stunned if this game deserves a 10 instead of a 9.5.

You missed my last sentence. What good's a ten if there isn't anything up there? IOW, what good's the top of the hill if there's no king to dethrone?

That Tony Hawk game changed the genre as we know it. You have no idea. It was like nothing else in the skating genre which up to that point had been mostly filled with craptastic games. Its all about context. You had to be there at the time, play the game, compare it to what was out at the time, to realize that it really was worth a 10.

Plenty of games have been genre changing (Civ, Total war, Sims, Championship manager are examples) but never scored a 10. You can't purely base it on its genre but also on how good the game itself really is. I played TH and it was good, but not more.

Well of course not everyone is going to agree with a score. Did you play TH3 at that time when it was brand new? It reinvinted the genre. If thats not a ten than truly nothing is or can be. Thats one of the most difficult things to do is take a genre and change it to what it should be. Thats what TH did and to me thats the very definition of a ten. You can say you don't agree but you can't deny the game has been copied endlessly since its release. Thats how influential it has been. Even if the franchise has since gone off into laziness. What it did back then is important. Plus it was a great game bringing in skate fans and non skate gamers.

When you think about a game being a ten. Its not possible for a game to be perfect. Then what else can a ten mean?

Again this is why I hate the ten point scale. It creates ridiculous expectations.
