And this is a surprise to absolutely no one.

The game gets boring quick. I am more than certain most people played it less than 5 hours.
I played it for 38 hours... Never again will I play a "survival" game again. Seriously the genre is ridiculously boring and lacks any challenge.

I've played 33 hours but hopefully either "Goodbye" games (love that :) ) will continue to move it forward to something closer to what it was supposed to be (I didn't watch any of the hype until after I bought and played it for myself, so I wasn't led by false promises).
I fully believe they intended to or even had most of the features they wanted in the game and then they tried to port the full thing over to PS4 hardware. That would have been the same time as the delay last year and when the feature chopping started. Of course you can't have a game hyped to the heavens by the Sony marketing machine come out as it is now, only to have a completely different and far superior product on PC. Another thing that makes me think this is the "game will be much better when we have Neo hardware" crap that came out just before the launch.
I wonder if they still think people will double dip for a Neo version? Actually scratch that, once the Sony marketing machine kicks in again, the faithful legion of drones will be all over it again.
It's exactly as I said, after about 15 hours the game will become a repetitive and incessant bore, on top of this the UK 2nd week sales of the game physically fell off 81%.
The game is a shit boring grindfest with nothing to do, I think the best analogy has been "as wide as an ocean and as deep as a puddle"...
15hours ? make that 5 hours .
I did enjoy No Man's Sky for a little while but it slowly started to turn into an awkward grind... travel to one galaxy, grind for resources to make more hyperdrive fuel, rinse and repeat. I'm not really enjoying the game anymore, but I'll hold onto it just in case they provide patches and updates to better the game. Time will tell.
I think Hello Games has already made enough money to care too much about longevity of the game.

I just hope they Sony and Hello Games doesnt look to the earnings gained as a good sign for a sequel.
IMO this game would have been great if they would have branched off the main quest with other quests to do. Better battles and a little less grinding for resources.
You mean if it was designed like an actual video game? Yeah that woulda been nice.

Survival games can be fun and thrilling but they have to let you make mistakes. Not being able to crash your ship. Not being able to get stranded on a planet. No Man's Sky plays it safe when it should thoroughly allow you to completely **** yourself if you're not paying attention. Instead it holds your hand and is less interesting for it.
the drop off in player numbers makes sense. once you've put 15-30 hours in the initial value has dropped off. you've done most of things there are to do and it isn't as exciting anymore. i went from ~15 hours over my first weekend to ~4 hours a week now and have gotten back to other games for the majority.
it's not that it's a bad game or that there are any problems on my end, there's just nothing to hold me in-game much anymore. from the get-go i had easy 60fps at 3200x1800 and not any of the problems a lot of people were spreading as the norm, most of whom hadn't even played it. i still enjoy it and still think it's a great game.
too many people just jumped on the hype train without actually realizing what the game really was so there was a lot of negative feedback too. i think it's a wonderful idea and as more mods and future content comes out it will remain to be a wonderful experience.

Honestly I am a consumer... I don't care what was intended, literally up until release I was under the impression that you could have some form of multiplayer which was the number one appeal to the game and look at every pre-launch interview or game play... For a game that is 80% mining they showed little to no mining or spoke of it in detail.
I'm not really fond self delusion or blind faith and will call this No Man's Sky situation out for what it is... A hype job of lies and borderline illegal misinformation in indirect advertising. Sony and Hello Games both knew what the game was and in what state it would be in pretty much a year before release... Yet they continued to circle jerk in every interview.
Also on a personal level... I have played many early access games and have one thing to say about them, by the time they are in a state that is playable chances are you are already bored of the game, I haven't played Day Z for almost a year and its in a much better state now than a year ago but since I have already played 100+ hours I have pretty much zero interest in playing any more of the game.
TLDR: Early Access is flawed and I am done with it along with survival games, also Hello Games knew what they were doing and I refuse to make excuses for companies... I have worked in marketing for a decade before leaving due to soul crushing conflict of ethics, we were lied to simple as.
Good riddance. I was truly amazed by how naive some people were in thinking this game was set to be the next best thing. There were red flags from the start.
Not to mention that Murray just straight up lied about what was going to be in the game. What a douche.
@hillelslovak: It is your own fault to believe they deliver everything they "promised". This is why you should wait for reviews and also not consume everything about a game.
I didn't follow the game at all, I knew it was ambitious and that people will be disappointed because they think it will more than what it will be. I waited for the review and bought the game because I'm OK with it and do enjoy it quite a lot.
It was the same shit when Ubisoft released Watch Dog ... people got hype as **** with the trailer thinking they will be able to hack "everything" etc while the reality was quite different.

I semi agree... That being said I have yet to play one that is actually challenging. Its literally get in the server right after a reset and start building a shelter and upgrade your character so you are superior to everyone else.
Day Z... has no challenging game play, its just hey hope you find a gun and someone to shoot. The only challenge is fighting the UI and shooting mechanics of the game which are borderline broken.
Don't Starve is the only survival game I would ever recommend the rest are all complete trash.

I completely agree with you, the game was never released as an early access title, it was hyped and sold as a fully featured title. I'm surprised there hasn't been any news of law suits yet.
@GarGx1: The worst part is that I fell for the intentional vague responses and Murray's lack of willingness to divulge information about the game prior to release because I believed that he didn't want to spoil the game and even when the guy that leaked footage he was still persistent that people shouldn't spoil the game for them selves.
Now that I have played it close to 40 hours I can honestly say that there is nothing to spoil.
He completely mislead everyone, he didn't want to talk about the details because he knew that if he said you will be mining for hours and there's no real plot or story that the hype would completely drop.
He's not innocent at all... He knew exactly what he was doing. He sold us a Early Access survival game for $60... F***ing genius.
Well, a review of big releases' timecourses on Steam suggests this isn't actually that unusual a drop-off, but I'm not surprised it is seeing a sharp one given how miserably it is being received. For me, I'm loving it still - ~20 hours into it, I've more-or-less got $60 out of it, and I've found some wild stuff. If I get sick of it by 30-40 hours... so what? That's when a lot of games either end or wear out their welcome. Too much haterade.
I still enjoy it. To each their own I guess. The angry mob like mentality people are demonstrating on the Internet is stunning. Because people can't make a purchase without first informing themselves about it through reviews or whatnot they want blood! They are going to do their best to make Sean Murray's life hell. It's proof that video game Internet commentors are mostly completely out of their minds and need help.

I'm in a different position, I bought the game based on what I'd seen in a couple of gameplay videos and got pretty much what I expected. It was after the launch that I looked into what all the fuss was about and found out about the lies that Sean Murray told in pretty much every single interview he gave. That's a rather despicable thing to do, my guess is that Hello games are on full lock down and not speaking anyone about anything.
Having said that you have had nearly 40 hours out of the game, that's more time than a lot of games last. I'd be really pissed if I'd only lasted 5 or 6 before getting tired of it.
Looking forward to picking up a PS4 years from now, I'll definitely get this game, hopefully it's $10 lol.

I was lucky to realize what a turd NMS was before the 2 hour mark. Managed to get a steam refund on it.

The internet isn't even going to make sure Sean Murray has to get out of game development, much less makes his life hell. A more accurate description of what is going on would be "People who feel scammed are going to vent on the internet for a few weeks, then crack lame jokes for a couple years." If you have a problem with the use of hyperbole on the internet, perhaps avoid using it yourself?
@kittennose: my problem is with people acting obnoxious and the negativity many of these so called video game enthusiasts display about this and every other game, it's vile. I'm embarrassed to share the same hobby with some of these types. I don't think the answer to my problem is to quit using the internet however. I think it would be great if more people who aren't obnoxious idiots posted on these forums instead of avoiding them like the plague.

Seems like it's worth checking out for 10 bucks.
but by then we'll have far superior games out.
I'm sure we will, I'm getting to a point though where I don't want to keep buying new gaming platforms until I've played what I want on platforms I already own. I'm also going to stop paying for online subscriptions so I can spend more hours outside of Halo and the like and keeping making dents in the backlog. I have a backlog of about 30 games, and a list of about 70 games I'd like to play on current platforms I own before moving on, plus plenty of games already in my collection I like to revisit every couple years.
In some ways I'm up to date- currently playing the new Doom game, I'll be getting Pokemon Sun at launch. And other ways I'm very behind- I just beat Golden Sun for the first time a couple days ago lol. I had no idea it was a cliffhanger so now I need to get the 2nd one. Chalk up another game on the list.
I'm hoping I can score a really good deal on a PS3 this Black Friday so I can finally play Ico and SOTC, Demon's Souls, The Last of Us, and Journey.
I'll probably wait until I can get a PS4 for ~$100.
wow..im sure hello games aren't jumping for joy about that.
They don't care, the game sold millions.
True, but NMS>QB and MCC
thus SONY wins again.
Poor cows and their delusions.
QB/MCC > NMS on metacritic.
remember when cows used metacritic for last of us? LOL

Many people could say the same thing about those who characterize gamers as a blood hungry, idiotic mob looking to put people through hell. Particularly when all they are doing is venting about being scammed in an industry with notoriously anti-consumer refund policies.
Gamers are some of the most relaxed consumers in the market. Gaming is one of the few areas where someone can't return a product three days old because the claims made about it for the past year proved to be outright fabrications. Instead of being driven from the fandom, gamers just vent a bit and then move on with their lives. Heck, that is why Molyneux managed his cycle for so long, and why Sean will use similar tactics to hype his next game.

I continued playing it just to see through the Atlas quest and to see if things change as I got closer to the centre. Neither things are worth while.
Hours are meaningless when it comes to game time.
I spent 147 hours in Day Z and 43 hours in Borderlands 2 ... Borderlands 2 hours where better than Day Z because of consistency of action and interactions, 147 boils down to maybe 20 hours of actual fun and 127 hours of running around looking for a back pack.
38 hours of NMS?... Its like 1 hour of fun and 37 hours of mining and selling to upgrade or move to a new system(grind)
Quality > Quantity
@Grey_Eyed_Elf: let me put it more plainly: I have received $60 of enjoyment from the game. I have no doubt that I'll get bored and wander off from it eventually. Maybe even soon - who knows. But I got the game I expected, I never expected MP so I'm satisfied. I'm not criticizing those with different tastes of who feel ripped off by what they didn't get, because there is definitely a lot of evidence of HG bouncing around on the issue

low power *uses Gamespotanium* energy recharge
think this game

is really good.

I didn't even see that but you are right : "Online play (Optional)"
The texte on the box is also there as a marketing thing but still, I enjoy the game for what it is... I do the same thing in any RPG I play, I grind like there is no tomorrow from time to time.
