No More Guessing About BC With The Scorpio!!

Xbox One Scorpio will be fully backwards compatible with Xbox One and Xbox 360. In an interview with Stevivor, Xbox head Phil Spencer noted that the console as specifically being designed so that Xbox 360 and Xbox One games ‘just run’ on it, without any technical wizardry’ required.

“We’ve very specifically designed it [on Scorpio] so Xbox games just run,” he said, referring to both Xbox 360 and Xbox One titles. “It’s nothing like Xbox 360 backwards compatibility right now — there’s a lot of technical wizardry involved in that. We didn’t want to have to do that again.”

That’s good- after all, one of the major points of these iterative consoles is that they will hopefully make libraries continuous, and never lead to generational breaks in libraries of the kind that we are otherwise used to. Now Phil, if you could just add original Xbox compatibility into the mix too, it would be much appreciated…

Fanboying aside, I don't see how it's a bad thing, I would def give Sony another shot if they made PS1-3 games BC, that's an insane library right there

I have a PS4 and I'm pretty happy with it, considering both consoles this gen have been lackluster in game quality and quantity but the bc for the XB1 and it's various versions is such a plus. If MS carry this on to next gen, I think may be switching over.

Microsoft actively working and supporting Xbox free backward compatibility is a great thing and gives their consumers confidence that your games will always go with you on future consoles. There were so many last gen games that I didn't have time to try out, so when they add it to the BC list and sometimes offer it free for GwG, it's an awesome option.

This is good news... system sounds better and better the more I hear about it. I have a lot of 360 games on the shelf.

Since I passed on the X1 think I'll scoop up a switch and a scorpio and be content with vanilla PS4.

I wish Sony would go this route as well. This is a very smart and pro consumer move. I hate having to keep all my consoles or lose the ability to play my library. With this, that worry is gone.

I'm confuse here, why would Phil say Xbox Scorpio would play Xbox One games when Scorpio is an upgrade console? It's like saying PS4 Pro will play PS4 games.

Damn, me too. That would actually give me a reason to get a Scorpio at some point. For some reason no one made a working emulator for the OG Xbox even though it had some really good games that were much better than their PS2 counterparts.

Scorpio's Xbox 360 BC wouldn't require Xbox One's Xbox 360 BC technical complexity.

Xbox One's Xbox 360 BC requires big chunks of game data to be converted before running the game i.e. static + dynamic emulation method. This method requires additional work on MS's side.

If Scorpio has a faster CPU, it run Xbox 360 games while data is being converted during run time i.e. dynamic emulation method. This method requires less work on MS's side.

It's another hint for Scorpio's CPU is not an overclocked Jaguar and XBO already has 1.7 Ghz Jaguar CPUs.

Xbox One's Xbox 360 BC list may be throttled back when Scorpio is released i.e. MS doesn't want to do further work on static conversions.

I'm bettign they meant all currently running as BC on the One, will work on Scorpio.

Oh, that makes perfect sense. CPU never came to my mind about running 360 games than the standards Xbox One games. I'm sure MS will find a way to make there Scorpio fantastic I supposed.

If they can somehow make this system natively run original Xbox games as well this would be the perfect system going forward, and they could forward translate this to any further consoles they build down the line succeeding Scorpio...

You should more likely expect the IPC levels of haswell/broadwell which again is a massive upgrade already

Scorpio will not have Xbox 360 hardware.

Laptop clock speed AMD ZEN CPU with Intel Haswell level IPC will be class above AMD's Jaguar CPU.

At 4K, expect R9-390X + laptop i7 Haswell with 8 cores like results.

AMD hasn't released RX-480 with R9-390X's effective memory bandwidth. Vega 11 replaces RX-480 sometime next year.

Scorpio's 8 core ZEN CPU may have reduced L3 cache, SMT disabled, turbo clock speed mode disabled and about 2 Ghz clock speed.

Cool I guess, I still have some of my 360 library - even though I ditched the console and haven't got an Xbone yet.

Truthfully though, it's only worth it for a few games for me. Unless they make the BC so that all 360 games are bumped from 720p (or worse) to native 1080p. Most Xbox 360 and PS3 games are pretty much unplayable compared to PC counterparts. Still, there are a few 360 games I will probably regret selling because of this (and ironically - I had to keep a few "multiplats" because they were so worthless they weren't even worth the effort to sell).

That is fuckin' great. Their approach to BC has been great.

I agree 100%, the potential would be fantastic, as a consumer you would love having all your games in 1 console, kind of like steam.

I never expected any less, after all this is a Xbox One only more powerful.

I'd have thought that BC on the Scorpio was a given, it's just an Xbox One with upgraded hardware running on exactly the same OS. If MS didn't allow older games to run on it they would literally have to create code to block them.
