Metal Gear Solid 5 Phantom Pain Doesn't Support Pre-Loading in PC

Many PC games support pre-loading, but Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain won't be one of them. Metal Gear Solid community manager Robert Allen Peeler has confirmed the stealth-action game won't support the feature, which he admitted was a "pretty common practice" in the PC space.

Asked by a fan why this is, Peeler replied, "I don't have a specific reason," noting that he was circling back with the development team in an attempt to find out.

Though you can't pre-load The Phantom Pain, you can pre-purchase it today from Steam. The game will officially unlock on September 1 New Zealand time, which is actually August 31 at 5 AM PDT / 8 AM EDT.

----

The console versions of The Phantom Pain, meanwhile, do support pre-loading. They will unlock on September 1 at 12:01 AM EDT / August 31 at 9:01 PM PDT.

Pre-loading allows players to download games ahead of their release so they can start playing immediately at launch. This is a particularly nice feature, as file sizes for games today can be quite large.

According to GameSpot's sources, Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima will leave Konami after The Phantom Pain ships next month. Just recently, a Nikkei report exposed the troubling culture inside of Konami.

The PC version of The Phantom Pain was originally supposed to launch on September 15, but Konami this week brought forward the game's release date to match up with the console version. Konami also announced that everyone who preorders The Phantom Pain on Steam gets a free copy of Ground Zeroes.

In other Phantom Pain news, Konami has published a new trailer and confirmed the game's multiplayer mode--Metal Gear Online--will not be available at launch.

It's basically BS. What do you expect from Konami though? Well, at least, the consoles will be able to pre-load.

I don't think consolites read the OP very well. This means that people playing on PC will still potentially be playing the game earlier than console users. It unlocks on Steam at 5 AM PDT August 31st, whereas it unlocks on consoles at 9 PM PDT August 31st. Since the (installed) game's only 28GB you can expect to have the download finished within a couple hours, provided your internet's fast enough. So, uh, enjoy having the ability to preload, I guess? According to the OP I'll be playing MGS5 more than 12 hours earlier than PS4/XB1 folks. :^)

What difference would it make to preload? If your internet is fast enough you should have it up and running the same day or relase, just the same way you won't be able to play it until that day even if you preload

No biggie, I mean I love pre -loading on day 1 and playing games at the turn of Midnight, but games often release on a Tuesday anyways and I usually have work the next day so I usually can only play 1 hour or so.

This is sad for me as my net speed is only up to 3Mbps. Not only that, once I downloaded at least 2GB, it is throttled down to 1/5 of its speed.

Actually that is very good news.

I remember Max Payne 3 having something similar going on. No pre-loading until release. But it released quite early on release day and it was a great PC version.

I don't see how they could mess up PP after the incredible PC version of GZ.

On PC is going to be released 16 hours(*subtract some hours for the downloading) earlier than PS4/XB1.

So for 16 hours* the MGS5:PP will be exclusive to PC LOL

I live in Guatemala. I have a 10mbps connection and the fastest available is 20mbps, but can't afford for it. Basically a 28Gb game like this would take me around 8 hours with consistent good speeds.

At least the pc peoples can be content with the a AAAA game not delayed for 6 months with the Publisher terrified of piracy.

Once they see the sales, that attitude will probably change, but, for the time being, rejoice.
