Sony is in on it too

The guy's the founder of Quantic Dreams, maker of Sony exclusive Heavy rain:

"Guillaume de Fondaumiere: I would say that the impact that the recession had, that the most important impact especially on AAA games on console, was the rise of second hand gaming. And I think this is one of the number one problems right now in the industry. I can take just one example of Heavy Rain. We basically sold to date approximately two million units, we know from the trophy system that probably more than three million people bought this game and played it. On my small level it's a million people playing my game without giving me one cent. And my calculation is, as Quantic Dream, I lost between 5 and 10 million worth of royalties because of second hand gaming."

They didn't "Lose" anything... they sold a copy to a person who has a right to sell it to someone else. The original person no longer owns the game or can play it.

Lots of developers make lots of money with out online passes or restrictions on used games... figure it out... but stop trying to punish consumers.

Well good thing their games are published by Sony who won't let them pull that sort of crap.

Sony have confirmed that while third party games are left to the publisher, they won't be doing this sorry of stuff.

I do recall QuanticDream saying a while back that way more people had trophies for heavy rain then the number of people that bought the game. I'm telling you the reason developers are in such an uproar about used games is because of trophies and achievements. They track and see how many people bought the game vrs how many people have trophies for it.

Sony haven't said what they're going to do, they stated they would not block used games just as MS are not blocking used games. We need to wait for both to give some proper details.

I agree, if used games go then games stores can once again stock up on full inventory like they used to, as it is now they stop ordering new supply when they run out to sell their used buybacks. The used game market makes those not so popular titles really hard to acquire. Without used games taking up like 60-70% of GameStop and EB Games shelf space maybe they can start managing a full selection of titles. Anyhow, more money for devs hopefully means we won't always see studios getting canned the moment they fail to make a blockbuster.

For a company that puts out story-driven single player games, the used game industry is definitely a concern. The early adopter will buy the game new, play it for 10-20 hours, then sell it; because once they beat it, there's no point playing it anymore. Then the businesses that actually buy back these games go out of their way to sell the used version over new copies. I've actually had to ask GameStop employees for a new copy of a game because they tried to sell me a used copy without telling me. So it's not just a matter of the consumers buying and selling used games, but the retailers doing everything in their power to encourage buying used games over new ones. Retailers are able to make up to 80% profit on every used game they sell, the company that made the game gets none of that money, and the retailer does its best to prevent the consumer from buying a copy that would help the game's creator. It's not too hard to see why many in the gaming industry do not like this practice..

The industry could do away with Gamestop since they mainly make money from used games. I'd be satisfied to just buy my games at Walmart or some other big chain store.

Rarely do I spend $60 on a game. It's really just once in a while. But I hardly ever do the used thing either. What I do most of the time is wait a while until a game becomes $20-$30. I don't know how much money they might lose selling them for that latter price but I do think a lot more people would buy them for that.

That guy doesn't have the final say on things. Sony has been a little cagey on this subject as well, just saying something about it being up to publishers. I don't know exactly what will happen but I don't think things are going to be exactly as they were this gen.

Probably a combination of pirated, rented, borrowed, and bought used. But it's likely more than that cuz not everyone that plays bothers ever hooking up their console to the internet.

Sony stated they will not charge a fee for buying or playing used games on PS4. MS has stated they will be charging a fee on used games on X1 & their game's publishers will also be charging a fee on used games. Sony stated they can't force publishers to not charge a fee on used games. Sony doesn't control everything and charge for everything like MS. Stop trying to make it look like they do.

No some people rented it from gamefly and some bought it used. I think multiplats should not charge a fee on used games as they sell it on multiple systems and make more. Exclusive console titles like Killzone need to make more from the sales and should charge a few dollars if you buy it used or rent it when you put it in the console. I'd be OK with that. But forcing people to pay to simply connect and play online and MS charging a fee on all used game sales and all game publishers also charging a fee on games is way over board.

This article proves Sony has stated they will not be charging a used game fee.

http://everydaydigitals.com/heres-what-i-think/23/microsofts-xbox-one-reveal-played-right-into-sonys-ps4-plans

Sony no doubt had to be getting a kick out of seeing Microsoft getting hammered amongst the gaming community and press but they remained silent. This silence has led some to believe that Sony may too be mulling around the idea of restricting used games on the Playstation 4 as well. When asked after their press conference in February, Sony's Worldwide Studio head denied such restrictions would be put on PS4 games. I guess we'll have to wait until E3 to know for sure on both systems. Beyond that, Sony has it's own issues to worry about. In their February reveal they promised a lot but showed very little when it came to services and features for the PS4. The online game streaming company they bought over a year ago, Gaikai seems to be the backbone to the streaming service and features promised but no working demo was showed nor was a lot of the user-interface that would be used for the PS4. While Sony warned that all of the streaming services won't be completed by launch and it will be a continual process, they will have to make good on some of those promises or they could receive a blowback of their own come E3.

Horrible logic... because your statistics show that 3 million people played the game but only 2 mil copies were sold at retail price doesn't necessarily mean that if you get rid of used games your numbers jump to 3 mil copies sold. Chances are the vast majority of the people who bought the game used wouldn't have bought the game anyway. If those 1 million people bought the game used and liked it, chances are you've increased your fan base and your next game will, hopefully, sell more than it otherwise would have.

Why is it all the xfans believe that what MS does Sony must also do?! It just baffles my mind! Sony made PS4 with gamers in mind and concentrating on games and making it a good console for gamers. It's obvious! MS has made the X One as a cash box to make money in every way possible and doesn't have as many games as Sony. MS is going for the casuals and Sony is about the hard core gamers.

Totally! A lot of people who buy it used are getting it because it's affordable for them. Most people can't afford nearly as many games if they have to pay full price or close to it. The fact is the more games cost the less games people buy. MS charging a used game fee and their publishers charging a used game fee will raise the cost of used games. This wont make a lot more money for them becuase people will buy less games. Infact if Sony & Nintendo don't charge fees on used games, lots of people will buy their consoles instead and buy more games on those consoles. Which will make games on those consoles sale way more. MS and the game publishers will push away gamers on their console. It will backfire on MS if Sony & Nintendo don't have used game fees.

[QUOTE="FLegendOfZeldaU"]They should be flattered that 1 million extra people played their awful game.clr84651

I don't have PS3 and therefor have never played Heavy Rain but it's got a 87% at gamerankings. That's awful? Pllleeaasse.

Heavy Rain was a good game. That person is obviously a fan of another company and never played it.

Lmao, how much does Sony pay to DC bad games?

People will play less games. It wont equal more games sold as people play only as many as they can afford.

There are viable arguments for the market. Putting the rather pompousness of the "if you can't afford it, erhrmhermher" argument, what benefit is it if less people can afford to buy a game?

I've spent the last five years before I got a job as a university student. I was as poor as it gets while keeping your electricity on. I lived on noodles. I still bought my favorite games day one for full price. It is not a matter of people not being able to afford games. It is a matter of people naturally buying the cheaper alternative, because why wouldn't you? But if games are becoming more and more expensive because they aren't selling enough copies to make the money back that went into developing them, surely stopping used games would result in higher sales of games at full price and as a result, the cost of games will come down. The net result will be that more people will buy games at full price, and games not worth full price will fail. The quality of games will improve, or at the very least, games offering less value for full-retail money will be retailed cheaper than they are right now. tl;dr everybody wins. Publishers make more money. Developers are less cash strapped. Games will end up better and cheaper.

Ok.................... I supported online passes. BUT i dont support the FULL blockage of the use game. Although I personally dont have a problem since i never buy use games and through-out this entire 7th gen have never borrowed a single game from anyone, but i think its morally wrong to deny some one the simplicity of letting his/her friend borrow a game. Thats messed up.
