At theGamesBeat 2009 Games Conferencein San Francisco today, games industry analysts Michael Pachter (Wedbush Morgan), Colin Sebastian (Lazard Capital Markets), and David Cole (DFC Intelligence) delivered their thoughts on the next 10 years of the games industry. Most interesting are the analysts' predictions for the next console generation -- or lack thereof.

"I think we've seen the last generation of consoles," Pachter claims. He says Nintendo will likely upgrade the Wii at some point (perhaps withHD and more storage), but all three console makers will be reluctant to release any subsequent consoles -- in the future it'll be more about a standard delivery platfrom. Why? Because there's no money in it for them. And because the third party publishers simply won't allow it. "[Third party publishers] are not going to support a PS4 or Xbox 720," he says, pointing to the fact that they're already largely struggling with the cost of developing games today. "The content is not going to change in any meaningful ways because the publishers can't afford it," he continues, suggesting that the current crop of consoles will be the ones to last us well into the future.

Sebastian disagrees, instead saying the game's industry will have one more console generation, which will hit in 2012. Cole agrees with him, saying that in 2012 the PS3 will be the leading platform for software sales and that both Microsoft and Nintendo will be forced to launch new platforms (Sony would likely wait a bit longer).

Patcher at least agrees that we wouldn't see another Sony platform for quite some time. "Sony is not going to put out a console until they make a profit on this generation, and my math puts that at around 2015."

The #1 reason this has close to zero chance of happening is because this is arguably the biggest gen ever. There is no ivory tower and hit games are selling by the multi millions on each console, don't tell there is no money to be made.

this post proves that michael patcher is full of ----. it also proves that in a matter of seconds, i did more research for one post than patcher did for the past year.

In this article, a Japanese analyst did the same thing. It states

"Late last month, executive shake-ups at Sony prompted one Japanese analyst to make a bold prediction: Sony was moving out of the gaming-hardware business and focusing solely on software. "I cannot now imagine a PlayStation 4," said Nomura Securities' Yuta Sakurai"

However Sony went on to rebut the claim, stating

"I think it would be rather shortsighted for anyone to predict there might not be a next generation of PlayStation product."

I think it's some Pachter trying to get his name into the gossip circle, I mean come on, is there any evidence to justify and end to the consoles?

After seeing OnLive it's obvious there is no need to ever have a next generation of consoles after this.

All Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo need to do is provide a service similar to the one on OnLive and just let us download a small updated and run it through our current consoles.

It's a much better idea than having us fork up for a new machine again, especially when a viable streaming gaming on demand platform now exists.

The PS3 already won you just don't know it yet.

That is VERY unlikely

MS has said that they will try to have the 360 to last 8-10 years. There are a few reasons behind it: First MS has lost so much money with the 360 hardware failures they have to keep the console life as long as they can to make up for their loses. Second the hype machine it still going and they can still add and change things for the console, until they cant do what they want to do, they wont be going to a new system. Next for the most part graphics arent going to get much better besides draw distances better textures etc which pc's have the advantage there. Until Dx11 comes out and its like night a day differences between Dx9 or 10 they have no reason to design a new console even in the next 3 years. Now with the PS3 in the last year they have been on the ball and devs are able to produce games easier which helps. And like the ps2, sony might out sell the 360 just because it has a little more head room to grow and use stuff. Now the Wii is in its own league so I wouldnt even worry about them. And now with this Onlive thing if it takes off consoles will feel the brunt of the blow because 2nd/3rd party devs wont be able to cope. So consoles as we know them might change or be gone later down the road. 04dcarraher

ok i need to correct...everything you just posted. first off, the rrod cost ms $1billion to fix. they paid that off in one shot and they don't have to worry about it ever again. second, they have been making a profit on the 360 since last year.every xbox sold makes ms a profit, unlike the ps3. third, ms is making changes to the 360, they're called firmware updates. nxe was the latest one. fourth, d3d11 (the named was changed from directx to direct 3d with the intro of d3d10), will be out at the end of the year or y march 2010 with the intro of windows 7. it will be windows 7 exclusive and is said to be levels better than d3d10 was over dx9. fifth, the ps3 is dead last by several million units. this generation is half up and unless ms stops selling the 360 now and sony starts to sell the ps3 at $200, they will not surpass the 360 sales-wise. not even catch up. sixth, onlive will be a failure. giving bandwidth caps and speed issues related to current broadband in the us, no one will be able to get decent graphics from the service. currently there are only 2 servers in the us with a third to come and none any where else in the world. this means that international gamers are better off with actual game consoles. anyway, this was already done before by a service named gametap. it failed too. the way consoles are made and how they operate will not changed anytime soon.

Patcher is a ****ing moron. Seriously, PS4 at 2015? Or he thinks they won't release one? lol, how does this guy get paid for this advise? Here is what I find funny, he still thinks the Wii was a "new console". It wasn't, it was a GameCube with upgraded memory. Anyways I don't think it's possible for Sony to make money off the PS3 anymore, that would require making billions which wont' be possible. What is more likely is Sony will keep the basic inards of PS3 and just upgrade the memory and graphics card, call it PS4. Developers won't have to change their dev tools at all. The part that made me know this was not true was when one guy said ps3 will be in the lead in 012. That is so unlikely its not even funny, and I'm getting one soon.
