I picked up at noon on Sunday at my local gamestop. When I got there the line was from the counter to the entrance to the store. I decided to give them 15 minutes for the line to go down so I went to target. Returning to the store at 12:15 there were a few people in line and for the time I was in the store (prob. 10 to 15 minutes) a few more people came in. So I would probably say my local store sold 25 give or take a few.
That said, I picked one up by trading in one of my DSlites ($70.00 trade in value). It was a DSlite I picked up at it's launch so several years old. Although it worked perfectly fine I traded it because
1. it had the dreaded hinge crack the lites experianced early on.(I fixed it with exopy myself as Nintendo at the time didn't honor fixing it for free)
2. The battery life wasn't what it used to be.
3. it was a white one so it was starting to show the yellowing on the buttons and pad.
That said, the DSi really is an improvement in just feel alone. I know a lot of people complain that there isn't very much "new" to the DSi, and while that is true to a point, I think the greatest thing about the DSi is not even talked about... Ie it feels better while your playing it... Bigger screen, clicky dpad, better feeling buttons, far better sound, bigger screens, even the actual texture of the machine is superior to the DSlite.
As for the camera and sound recording, while I was pretty convinced they would be worthless they are actually quite fun. In the future I'm looking forward to the online store living up to its potential with some cool applications and games.
Yes for a cash strapped person I can see sticking with DSlite as it's a fine machine, i'm just pointing out that it's easy to overlook the fact that the DSi does have few things going for it both now and in the future.
Until then, well i'm happy having both, although I see myself playing on the DSi far more due to reasons pointed out above.
