Every time I see a DS vs. PSP thread, it's filled with posts that'd have 12 year olds offended. Summary: DS is win, PSP is fail and has no games. It seems such a mindset was abandoned for every system but the handhelds. As I've said before, pretty much everyone in System Wars is a Sony fanboy; That it, until it comes to handhelds when everybody becomes a Nintendo fanboy. So, I thought I'd make a thread, while not claiming the PSP's superiority, shows that it's not as bad as you System Warriors think. As you can see, in First/Third Person Shooters, Racers, and Fighters, the PSP not only has more games, but they're of a notably higher quality as games in such genres on the DS usually have near brain dead AI, inferior level design, and arguably inferior controls. On top of that, there's less content, lower quality visuals, lower quality audio, and inferior presentations. In the Action Adventure genre the DS and PSP are roughly equal, though the PSP wins in quality. In the Turn-Based Strategy genre, they are, again, nearly equal in numbers, but the PSP has a slight edge in quality and the DS has a slight edge in controls.

The DS may have a superior library (as far as scores are concerned), but depending on the genre, you may find the PSP to be the only way to go.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that I left out Sports because I really didn't feel like editing that much text. Though, I assure you the PSP won by a landslide in that genre.

Sorry, this post doesn't change how I feel. For handheld gaming, I prefer the DS so much more.

I prefer a system with less realistic games. I want a game that makes me admire all of the imagination in it.

Take Blur for example. You can throw power-ups in, but that isn't going to make it stand out at all.

Games that stand out -> Games that fit in

As I said in the OP, I'm not claiming the PSP's superiority, but showing that it's not as bad as people say it is.

As if the PSP's library consists solely of realistic, unimaginative games.

The DS rules the roost when it comes to RPG's, Action Adventures, Platformers and Strategy titles. Eventually, they're what count for handheld gaming. It also doesn't help that the DS has Mario Kart DS, which totally outdoes the entire PSP racing library on its own, and automatically makes the DS racing library superior.

Thanks for this. In the realm of First/Third Person Shooters, Racers, and Fighters, the PSP is king of the handhelds. The same is true of the DS in terms of RPGs, Platformers and Adventure/Puzzle games. Both have their strengths and weaknesses, and sure as we acknowledge that the DS has the overall better library, we can also see that their strengths belong to different genres and certain audiences may indeed be better suited to purchase a PSP over a DS.

The problem with the PSP is, it doesn't try to be a handheld, but like a mini console. Whichever you prefer when you buy a handheld.

The PSP is great and definitely worth getting. And if you haven't got it, then you probably are a fanboy.

No doubt the Sony handheld is on a roll this year. Amazing games coming out. I wouldn't miss out.

I don't know about you, but my preferred handheld is the one that has the most games that suit my tastes, not the one that puts up the best act.

I agree that the difference is not that bad I have both and from personal experience both have something good to offer, I still prefer DS mainly because of RPGs, platformers, and puzzle games but that doesn't mean I hate my PSP, I actually consider MGS PW as my no. 1 handheld game so far this gen followed by TWEWY and/or Pokemon SS, I'm also looking forward to KH BBS and DQ IX. It's best to have both handhelds.

EDIT: waiting for fightninja162 to turn this thread to another pointless DS vs PSP thread

Same. I mean, I own both too, but I like the DS more. That's probably because I'm a sucker for RPG's and the DS is full to the brim with those :P

I took a break from RPG's and puzzlers back in mid '09 (which is when the PSP became my preferred system) because I got tired of grinding and started craving more "actiony" games. I plan on getting back into them (RPG's, that is) starting in Q4 of 2010 with 4 Warriors of light.

Don't forget Golden Sun DS. That game promises to be awesome.

No, I listed all games scoring above 7.0 in genres where the PSP does well.
