How about you compare its story to that of another games. and as for dime a dozen stealth games? im sure you meant shooters.

tmntPunchout

I could compare it to another game, but it doesn't seem to make sense for me to do that when the majority of MGS4 fans praise the game's plot as better than most movies. Compared to the plot of your average game, it's pretty good. That is only because most video games have ridiculously poor quality and depthless plots.

The way that MGS4 was made though, they wanted it to be compared to movies. You don't fill a game with hours worth of animated cutscenes just to be compared to yet another cookie cutter game's plot.

As for the game, yes I did mean stealth games. MGS4 really does not shine that much from your average stealth game. Itt's good, but the quality and quantity of it does not justify your 50 dollar purchase alone.

What difficulty did you play the game at?

I used the normal difficulty. I'm not saying the game is easy though, it's not really that hard either, but that's not the point. It's the quantity of the gameplay itself, not how hard it is. There's just not enough hours worth of gameplay to justify your purchase if you're not a fan, especially when most of it is broken up by cutscenes.

LMFAO

You pick the most abstract part of a game - the story, something which is pretty much entirely subjective and say its bad. What rubbish. Try again.

And yes, being familiar with previous installments in a movie franchise very much contributes to your enjoyment of the sequels, the entire story and the characters. Watch Godfather 2 without seeing the first one. Watch Empire Strikes Back before watching New Hope. Then tell me its the same experience as if you had seen the first installments of those franchises first.

MGS4 doesn't have unique gameplay? Um, please give me another game where you can play through it entirely using stealth where you are never seen and never kill anyone else, and then can play through it again like a straight on FPS/TPS where you kill everything and use 70 unique and customizable weapons to do so.

Here we go again, talking about cutscenes and their length. If the best thing you can come up with when saying a game is bad is because it has too many lengthy cutscenes, then guess what, you're playing an amazing game.

This is nothing short of epic fail on your part.

Cloud_Insurance

First, please never say "Epic Fail" it's annoying.

Is there even a reason I could give you that you wouldn't throw off as just being rubbish? You're blinded by your love for the series, which isn't a bad thing, but how can I expect you to take a single criticism of the game seriously?

Neither of those examples you gave apply the same way that it does for MGS4. While of course watching the previous installments will help (Like I said in my first post) if you were to watch Empire Strikes Back without seeing the previous films, the movie would not seem ridiculous, it would just be slightly confusing. Playing MGS4 without playing through the previous games though, the entire story just seems to be full of melodrama and emotional scenes that wouldn't even slightly affect the viewer.

Now for the gameplay. The stealth is NOT that great. It's on par with most stealth games, like I've said before. Take Splinter Cell Double Agent for example, while it's just my opinion, I felt a much more immersed sense of stealth in that game than I did in MGS4. And MGS4 does not even begin to compare to an amazing FPS. There just isn't enough features in it for it to be comparable in the slightest way.

Also, we were not solely talking about cutscenes, don't try to pull it back to that and discredit the entire bottom half of my post. Gameplay and cutscenes are being discussed here, if you're too blinded to see the validity in any MGS4 criticism it's not my fault.

No offense but with someone who has an avatar of PW (and i assume a fan of that game), i see no reason why you can complain about long cutscenes and dialogue with little gameplay in MGS.

I see what you're saying, but I enjoyed the unique aspects of Phoenix Wright. Court, investigation, questioning witnesses, the gameplay allowed for lengthy dialogue because the cutscenes and dialogue didn't come off as trying to be a film inside of a game. Almost every dialogue scene was relevant to the court case ahead and paying attention to them meaned more than just watching character development.

Played it. Wasn't really impressed though, I enjoyed the online play of other games of that type a lot more, just didn't really see any point in playing it more than once or twice. In that way though, I did enjoy the single player experience of MGS4 a lot more than I enjoyed the online play.

This is one thing that I've been seeing here that is really getting to me. If anyone says even the slightest thing against MGS4 they are assumed to be a lemming right away, but that's not always true. I own both a PS3 and a 360 and BY FAR PS3 is my favorite system of the two. When it comes to MGS4 though, I despise the game. I felt the storyline was ridiculously overrated and cheesy. Felt like a soap opera in a video game setting. Yet I love my PS3 and I love the games on it, I feel most of them are superior to every 360 version when it comes to Multi-Plats, but I still hate MGS4.

MGS4 is not the crown jewel of the PS3, it's mediocre game that rides off the coat tails of its previous games. Stop making so many assumptions.

LittleHands134

You fail to see WHAT mgs4 is.
It is a fan-service. It is not for people who never have played a MGS game before. It is made specific to ME and people lie me, who lovethe MGS universe.

Understandable. With that in mind though, how can you justify a 10.0 rating when GS specifically states that an AAAA game should be able to be enjoyed by anyone who plays it?

Name 1 thing about the game that is mediocre? I'll wait, because you can't.

There is a difference between saying a game is bad because of things like technical problems and design flaws - a game like Too Human for example.

And saying a game is bad because you personally don't find it enjoyable.

I could say all racing games suck because I don't like the genre. That doesn't make me right. I should still be able to appreciate and acknowledge a good game, even if it doesn't personally satisfy my tastes.

That said, when you look at MGS4 and are familiar with the series, its one of the best games ever made. Its really that simple. Nothing about the game is generic or average or mediocre or remotely close. This isn't my opinion, its a fact. Look at every area that a game could be possibly rated in and tell me how MGS4 falls short.

Make sense?

Yup! This man makes sense. If it were up to me, all RPG's would score less than 2.

Most MGS fans will praise the game as on the same level as a movie. As far as quality it can't even compare to a good movie.

When compared to a game, the storyline is decent but the basic story flaws are still there.

That pretty much sums it up.

Does someone know how much time is spent playing MGS4 vs. Watching Cutscenes? Overall storywise..I'll give it to MGS4 anyday. The thing was like a movie basically....when I first played it, it was like walk down the street *cutscene, Run around the corner * cutscene, Climb up a ladder *cutscene. lol. Not to take anything away from it but c'mon.
