Team Ninja + Nintendo = Metroid another GOTG

The combination of these two developers will be deadly, maybe even greater than Nintendo and Rare.

They make up for eachothers shortcomings very nicely.

-But please don't say that. Combo better than Perfect Dark, Goldeneye, Conker, and Banjo. ALL which have scored above 9.5 :?

- That being siad, I was extremely excited to see this. Image what the reception would have been if it were ZELDA insted :o.

Everyone would be lost as hell.

You don't even need a cutscene to tell a story. Fans would feel alienated though.

Maybe it's just me, but I prefer cutscenes to actual elements in the game that tell the story. That's not to say that I don't want the story to be told in the actual game - it's just that cutscenes are needed too to make a story-driven game.

I disagree that cutscenes are necessary for a story-driven game. They defeat the point of interactive entertainment to me.

Well, considering that the vast majority of games today use cutscenes, you must not like a lot of video games.

Judging by Miyamotos comments on the round table the next Zelda is going to epic. Cant wait to see it.

I deal with them, but i don't like them. A lot of developers are moving away from cutscenes, trying to find new and unique ways to move the narrative forward. They want to deliver a story without removing the player from the game.

To be honest both could be a part of a game. I think of SH 1 or 2the main story it self was cutscenes, but if you wanted to get even deeper and even learn some side stuff you had to read some of the writing in the game.

i.e. Mass Effect's fully interactive dialogue with amazingly realistic facial animations.

Logs (Metroid Prime series, Bioshock), Interactive dialogue -thanks FFox- (Mass Effect, Fallout) Quick Time Events (Resident Evil 4/5, GoW series). More and more devs are going beyond the standard cutscenes.

I don't know why people are hating on IronBass for not thinking the game looks good. I think the game looks great, and scanning is a great and unique way to develop the story. But the Prime trilgoy is done now, so their taking it into new direction, and i like that. I thought voice acting was good, but whatever. This and Mario Galaxy 2 stole the shows for me. Then Alan Wake, GoW3 and Splinter Cell. Last Guardian looks sick too, but i got no PS3.

That is an interactive cutscene. I believe IronBass is referring to cutscenes like those in Final Fantasy where you sit there and twiddle your thumbs for half an hour.

Though, I personally enjoy Kojima's work with Metal Gear Solid and the blurring of the lines between game and film.

That's a bad comparison. Firstly, bcause that "cutscene" was filled with QTE, making it very interactive. Secondly, that cutscene was a fight, there was no kind of story behind it.

I'm a huge Prime fan.

I'm a bit let down about this new entry in the series (but I'm also happy to hear that Retro is working on something else, so at least we'll get another game in the series.) The last Ninja Gaiden was a bit of a let down, and Team Ninja WITHOUT Itagaki is a shadow of its former self. This game looks to be all action rather than the adventure/exploration that defined the Retro entries, I'm also worried that it'll have all the frustrating camera issues that sometimes worked their way into Ninja Gaiden.

Metroid made by Team Ninja WITHOUT Itagaki rather than by Retro? No thanks, I'll hold out to see what Retro is working on instead.

I disagree, one of the reasons I do not like the prime series is the pointless scanning, I did not like it at all. Immersion or not it was tedious and boring. I'd rather 9 hours of well made cutscenes with VA ala MGS than hours upon hours of tedious scanning with little or no VA I'm not trying to change your mind cause it seems your dead set on hating the game, just saying how I feel.

You know, I wouldn't be surprised if there are two cinematic cutscenes in the game, one at the beginning and one at the end. I think we're getting ahead of ourselves.

I personally think Samus should talk. I agree that Link should never talk but I think Samus should so long as its not Phillips CDI bad. I don't see why people are argueing over cutscenes and scanning. Maybe both should be put in and Nintendo is also involved si I'm sure they no what there doing. The only skepticism I have is the camara and whether Team Ninja is writing the story or if Nintendo is writing it.

As for Retro, I would prefer if they do something new. Also, as much as I think Metroid Other M is going to be great, I also love the Prime series to the pint that metroid Prime was my favorite game last gen. Prime turned out well and they were an unknown developer. My point is lets just wait before we jump to conclusions to a game that was just annouced yesterday.

Ever play Metroid: Fusion (made by Nintendo R&D1, the same team who has made every single other Metroid that isn't a Prime)? Samus has a full speaking role and is always talking about Adam Malkovitch. Do you even know if it is Team Ninja that is making her talk? Because not only does she talk in Metroid: Fusion, but also talks in the official, Nintendo produced, Metroid manga.

Silent protagonists are a thing of the past and limited production resources. So much more can be learned about a protagonist when you can hear all of their thoughts and feelings.

But my complaint was more foucsed on the cheesey dialogue and the weak voice-acting.

Metroid Fusion was win. But that's because I was able to "read" her. A

fter so many games with a silent protagonist, I have "how would she sound like" in my head.

Actually listening to her... is fail.

Nostalgia preventing change. It happens often with Nintendo fans. They beg for "change" but when it comes, they cry foul.

Then you cannot adapt to the times. She hasn't been a silent protagonist since Super Metroid (she talked in first person at the beginning of the game about the developments between Metroid 2 and Metroid 3).

Samus is one of the only characters in Nintendo's repertoire that has the potential to be so much more than just a blank slate for players to see themselves as. She is nothing like Gordan Freeman... she is a character with a defined personality... and if Nitnendo chooses to change her, then you have to accept it as canon. I enjoyed Fusion more than any other Metroid game when it came to plot and narrative... because there actually was one.

Nintendo needs to stop living in the past. At least in Half Life 2, there is a strong and detailed narrative built around Freeman's silence. Gone are the days of the NES and stories like "The president has been kidnapped, are you a bad enough dude to save him?" Now we have games with branching plots that tell epic stories. I've always thought that the next big step for Metroid is into the narrative-driven RPG realm. Its the only Nintendo franchise that is adaptable to the new developments in narrative.

I can bet you that every single Zelda fan who cried about Twilight Princess being too similar to Ocarina of Time will cry when the next Zelda is so different from the Zelda formula that it doesn't resemble it at all.

I think it will be a very good title but Super Mario Galaxy 2 looks outstanding.

Then you cannot adapt to the times. She hasn't been a silent protagonist since Super Metroid (she talked in first person at the beginning of the game about the developments between Metroid 2 and Metroid 3).foxhound_fox

I don't mind listening to her. Just that I expect dialogues and voice-acting on par with the character.

I enjoyed Fusion more than any other Metroid game when it came to plot and narrative... because there actually was one.foxhound_fox

Agreed. Fusion's plot was excellent.

I can bet you that every single Zelda fan who cried about Twilight Princess being too similar to Ocarina of Time will cry when the next Zelda is so different from the Zelda formula that it doesn't resemble it at all.foxhound_fox

Change is not the problem. Majora's Mask was a good example of change. Another M, so far at least, doesn't. I hope I'm wrong. And btw. TP was awesome. I wouldn't mind a Majora's Mask 2, though.

This will be potentially one of the best games for the next decade or longer.

[QUOTE="mdisen2"]

It looks like Super Metroid 3D, same asthetic. I was happy to hear the creator of both Metroid Fusion and Super Metroid is working on this, and that the story would bridge the two games.

screechmario

Exactly and that's exactly what I wanted to see. Screw Metroid Prime. I want Super Metroid back in 3D.

Also with Team Ninja on the job you can bet the combat engine will be deep.

My god this is gonna be awesome.

I'm with you guys on this one. This game looks far more like Super Metroid than the prime series tries to be. The dash attack returns!! That used to be a super metroid exclusive!
