[QUOTE="walkingdream"] Only because it's Multi platform. Both GTA and COD If they were Exclusives then theres no way they would be bigger than Halo this gen. Mario is the only one thats bigger. TheMaryCeleste

How about this. COD is bigger on the xbox 360 than Halo is this Gen. It has sold more than Halo even when you count individual platforms. COD on 360 alone as sold more than Halo 3 and Halo ODST.

No, it's not even close to Halo 3.

http://www.vgchartz.com/worldtotals.php?name=&publisher=&console=X360&genre=&minSales=0&results=50&sort=Total

Even though i hate VGchartz. The fact that MW2 on 360is still charting in Monthly NPD's top 10says alot about the franchise

Mind you MW2 was released less than a year ago and its still charting in NPDs monthly

 VGChartz also claimed StarCraft II sold 1.8 million in 24 hours.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_Xbox_360_video_games

The Halo 3's sales figure is from January 2008.

Face the facts, CoD will never be bigger than Halo on the 360.

OH i see your talking about MW2, i thought you were talking Cod4 and you made it seem like you were talking about one Cod game when comparing 3/ODST. Why not compare it to Cod4 which came out around virtually the same time?

A franchise is not limited to only one product.

Halo as a franchise is much bigger than CoD and GT. I'd go as far to say the only company with franchises larger than Halo would be Nintendo with Pokemon and Mario.

Then you can add tons of other franchises with video games that are massively larger than Halo. Start with Transformers, Spider-Man, and Ironman and don't forget to pass through Hello Kitty and Toy Story.

Halo as a franchise is insignificant. As a game collection it has a lot of relevance, but still overshadowed by a lot of other game products.

Thats why i said that this is a gaming forum and people still wanna throw other things in there that stil makes Halo insignificant

Doesn't a franchise define everything that is involved in it? The Lord of the Rings Franchise ..etc...looks like your wrong when it comes to defining what a franchise is.

This is a gaming forum. And even when i use your example halo still is not close. POKEMON includes the books, movies, games, soundtracks, books about the lore. So calling Halo the biggest is still wrong.

Phew...luckily I never called Halo the biggest or bigger than Pokemon...phew

[QUOTE="DrOldGuy"]Halo > Mario.delta3074
not really, mario has over 200 games with 210 million sales, Halo only has 6 games with 35 million in sales, yeah i would rather play Halo, but theres no denying that Mario is the biggest gaming franchise in history, Halo, i am afraid, is not even close.

Not really most of those are games that Mario has a cameo in because if you look at that list it includes stuff like Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time which Mario was in but he was in a painting that you can see if you look in one of the windows in Hyrule Castle. If you actually look at games with Mario in the title or games where Mario has a big part of story it is a lot less games.

Way to misread my post young man. Halo is not that big. Certainly not as big as that xbox director guy is making it out to be. People say halo has books and all this other stuff. Now when you start throwing all these other stuff in there and apply it to other franchises it still makes Halo look small. It does not help Halo's case. Do you understand what i am saying now?

Mario has appeared in more than 200 games and has been here since 1981. It's obvious that it's bigger than Halo. Why are we even discussing this?

Yes i do but that still doesn't make me agree with you. I'm not saying it's as big as the Xbox director is saying it is (its his product what else is he going to say?), but it's a massive franchise and to call it Insignificant is just poor poor comment IMO. Also on the post above why wouldn't you? MW2 came out at a much later date compared with Halo 3 despite only selling a little bit more on the platform. Not to mention Halo 3 destroying Cod4 in 360 sales, which came out around the same time. BTW this is all VG charts so how can we know it's exactly correct anyway?

Pokémon is presumably the biggest phenomena in gaming history, but it also depends on how you define "big" or "successful". For instance, StarCraft has been a bigger success than any Pokémon game, and WoW is the most successful computer/video game of all time.

Yes its came out later than HALO 3. 2 years later and it has already eclipsed the total sales for Halo 3. COD MW2 sold more in 10 months than Halo 3 did in 3 years. Do you see what i am saying? and the year they were released does not really matter. Unless we wanna start throwing ODST in there which makes the numbers even worse. But i'm not even gonna go through that route.

Now we talking about the biggest franchises. But i'm calling the franchise insignificant when you compare it to other franchises out there thats what i'm saying. In the realm of gaming its one of the biggest for sure, no argument there. But once we start to take it out of that realm of gaming and compare it to other franchises, it really starts to pale in comparison. Thats what i am saying.

This Gen Mario 2d has outsold HALO 3 and ODST Combined.

Mario KArt Wii has done the sane. Once again You are still wrong.

Blaze-Agent

Still wrong? When was I wrong the first time? Also you do realize there are more things that define the word "bigger" than just sales...you are amusing.

Wow really please do share. And you were wrong as soon as you said that This gen Halo is bigger than Mario. (GT i'll give you since GT5 has not released yet, but not Mario). Please do tell by the way what constitutes big in your eyes.

Well you can define the abstract statement of "big" in other areasbesides sales such as,name recognition, popuarity, and talked-about-ness. Now I'm not saying sales don't play a huge role...so please don't take words out of my mouth. I'm also not saying Halo is the biggest video game franchise ever, but it is very large. It already been mentioned, but Halo has a massive franchice from books, to games, to collectibles...hell it has a couple movies too.

There is absolutely no way anything that started as a game beats Pokemon when it comes to overall franchise, however your ignorance of Halo's impact and largeness in scale is disconcerting.

ODST wasn't a sequel........ And no your using VG Charts, and yes it did come out later so therefore bigger install base = more potential customers. Why are you so reluctant to compare games that came out at the same time and have to use MW2 that came out much later to validate your point which my not be correct anyway?

Not really, WoW is the most profitable game in history--that's pretty much a fact.

And StarCraft's history is a fascinating one. It's been actively played for 11 years, and players there earn $200,000 a year for playing the game, not to mention the fact that one gamer has a 500,000-strong fanbase.

Look, when a game is broadcast over three television channels, and when it makes the gamers media celebrities, you know it's big.

You seem to me like the one pulling stuff out of thin air and changing your argument. First we shouldn't include other Halo merchandise since this is a gaming forum and we are talking about games. Then your talking about how Halo is insignifcant outside the realm of gaming and I'm still not getting over the 300 million viewer Top Gear statement...I think that falsehood coupled with your use of VGchartz pretty much sums you up.

http://www.thefirstpost.co.uk/66349,news-comment,entertainment,cruises-top-gear-loses-to-sherlock-in-tv-ratings#ixzz0zAKYEuKu

Top Gear is estimated to have 350 million viewers worldwide, making it one of the most successful programs produced by the BBC.

The link you provided was just for the UK. I'm talking about WW

Pokémon is presumably the biggest phenomena in gaming history, but it also depends on how you define "big" or "successful". For instance, StarCraft has been a bigger successthan any Pokémon game, and WoW is the most successful computer/video game of all time.

Now i know you really dont know what you are talkinbg about and just puling stuff out of thin air. Both of your statements are false

Well if i could link it i would but it wont let me. I'll pm it to you then. If you wanna take Halo out od the realm of gaming it becomes really insignificant when compared to other franchises.

Plus i already stated that i dont like using VGChartz but thats the only means of accurately measuring the sales for now. Plus you ignore the fact that MW2 still charts at the top 10 IN NPDS 10 months after its out. Even Halo 3 did not manage that. You also ignore the fact that MW2 outsold Halo 3 by a million in the first month that they were both out.

Wait but you say its bigger than pokemon. Which is false. Plain and simple.

How am i trolling? Practically Every pokemon game thats been released. LIke Pokemon sells like2-2.2 million copies per release week in Japan Alone. That does not even account for its success in the west.

The amount of WoW copies sold in all likelihood eclipses the best-selling Pokémon game, not to mention the fact that they're not close to being as profitable as WoW.

And neither do I see any individual Pokémon game that had a bigger impact than StarCraft. Obviously, they sold more, but success is much more.

Anyway dude, I don't want to waste your time. If you want to think what you do, do it... I don't really care.

Ok guess we both win then. To each his own. But if you think Polemon has not had more of an impact than Starcraft then i bet you would be in the minority. And i doubt that the best selling WOW game eclipes the best selling pokemon game.

http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/93518-NPD-Reveals-World-of-Warcrafts-Lifetime-Sales-in-the-US

It's safe to assume that World of Warcraft has sold quite a few copies at retail in the US. Now we can add a number to that assumption thanks to the NPD, who have revealed the lifetime sales figures for WoW to Gamasutra. Counting every single version of WoW that's been released thus far, the series has sold a whopping 8.6 million copies to date.

I Think its safe to say that even combined WOW versions sales don't compare to individual Pokemon sales.

"Halo is the biggest video game series in history and as a pop culture icon it's been called the Star Wars for the joypad generation," said Xbox and Entertainment director Stephen McGill.

I think he forgot to say "one of" because Mario has Halo beat by a landslide. Of course we all know that it's the director's job to forget about stuff like facts. :^)

blackace

Yeah,,,, it's just PR spin, like Sony saying "PS3 it just does everything." lol!!

Yep. Cows ignore that statement yet jump all over some stupid PR comments.

Hard to stomach the idea of any FPS at all being the most popular franchise known worldwide and recognized. Now I can understand a mascot like Sonic or Mario, but not some FPS game.

well im not sure about the other big games. but I do know halo has a lots of things like books, graphic novels, soundtracks, movie, toys, adult collectible toys (there's a difference between the two),clothing, and I guess there is more. a little similiar to star wars.

Anberlin_2004

In order to even compare with Star Wars, Halo will need to maintain it's popularity until the year 2027 much like Star Wars and Mario have for the last 25 years.

perhaps I should have said the two(star wars and halo) are being milk to make the similarity?unless you don't believe halo is being milk like star wars. Should I have said that halo and star was have an expanding storyline? help me out here please.

They are both sci-fi and they both provide a lot of merchandise. In comparison, Halo is still considered new by some, and only time will tell if it can keep this momentum going for the next couple of decades. It may become an even bigger series if it goes multi-platform like COD.
