i've played and loved all three... but honestly SMG and GeoW can't compare with MGS4.

The closest i've seen this gen are Bioshock and Fallout3

Chutebox

SMG can compare. Seriously, you guys need to stop making MGS4 out to be more than it really is.

Who's to say it isn't to us saying the good things about it?

Uh, did I make sense?

You guys make it sound like no game can compare to MGS4. That's Overrating it.

Well for me neither of those games, or any games since FF7 can compare to it. I know you dislike it though lol.

Never said i disliked it, what i've said is it doesn't deserve all the praise and perfect(prime) ratings it gets. What did it do to put it's self so far ahead of any game sincce FF7?

Excellent controls, great graphics, superb music, top notch directing, an epic story arc, strong voice acting, and a powerful narrative. And all of this wrapped into one of the most varied single player campaigns ever producing a satisfying conclusion to a 20 year old saga. Yeah, I think that about sums it up.

Just the overall experience. It's hard to explain exactly, but to me no game in recent memory has done such a good job of bringing up emotions from the player. I'm not talking just about sadness just either, caring for the characters, the story, and really taking the word epic to a whole new level (think act 4). I don't expect everyone to agree though, that's just silly.

-Controls are clunky and poor compared to other TPS game.

-Cover system is complete trash,

-Graphics were subpar aside from character models,

-Direction was far was from top notch: watch movies if you want to see good direction,

-story is full of deus ex machinas, plot holes, bad and redundant dialog,

-voice acting is not strong. -Powerful narrative overshadows gameplay.

-Stealth gameplay isn't up to genre standards (ie beginning of act III was boring, they could have executed the only forced stealth gameplay much better) -Essentially MGS3 with more refined controls nothing new in this regard ,

-Game is poorly paced because cut scenes tend to overshadow gameplay in the later half of the game.

-Drebin breaks stealth gameplay, you never really need to worry about the silencers losing their effect because you almost always have enough points to buy however many more you need.

-Drebin is also a lazy plot device to feed you overly sappy and depressing back stories to the bosses.

-Boss fights don't hold up to previous games. Much less original. The second part of the boss fight grew tiresome and repetitive.

-Story is too over the top to be taken seriously.

If it is ahead of anything, it's not ahead by much.

Why are people debating people's choices? I chose MGS4 and I dont care if you can bring me a PhD article on why game X is better than MGS4, because its my personal choice and I enjoyed MGS4 more than the other GOTY games. I dont care what game X has done to revolutionize a genre or what its done for the video game industry. All I care about is the fact that I enjoyed it. You can argue all you want, but its not like im going to change my choice :?

Both were really good. I go for SMG only because the length of the cutscenes started to get to me especially towards the end and i didn't get half the story/fanservice stuff because i only played MGS original in a far away past.

Especially if you're an MGS fan it's 100% fan-service.

In everything other than gameplay.

Its barely a stealth game anymore.

Its still good, but the lack of sneaking (and this goes downhill as the game progresses) really f'd me off.

One of the best bits of the game for me was the

***spoiler***

flashback when you play as snake again from the original game

Firstly, there is stealth in the new MGS game, it just depends on whether or not you want to use it or not. Its not forced upon you anymore, its a choice now. Secondly to use spoiler tags type [ spoiler ] *input your message here* [ /spoiler ] No spaces of course. And if you get an HTML error and you are sure all your HTML is perfect, open up notepad, CUT your entire post, paste it in notepad, then recopy your post from notepad and paste it back into GS. Press submit and it should work. Notepad seems to clean up any html errors.

it starts off like that, and yes there is a little bit of it in the game, but it goes down hill rapidly. The first act is probably the best.

Later on the optional stealth goes out the window...and its never feels quite the same. Its been a while since I last palyed it, but from what I remember most of the stealth was more happening in the middle of battles. You didn't feel like the master of stealth undetected behind enemy lines.......you felt like a dude in a war zone running the other way.

IMO anyway.

The only level that I remember feeling like a MGS game is that bit back in shadow moses where you are sneaking past those odd sensor drones. The ones with the arms.

Which one was that - I can't remember the act numers very well after the first - the game gets very cutscene heavy very fast? There was the one when you are a "tracker" and follow the footsteps. I thought this was a great idea, but just ended up feeling like it didn't work - the levels were too small and linear for it.

and then there was the bit were you are following the guy through the city - again, not bad, but it felt weak compared to the old games.

Yea, act 3 is when you're in Europe and have to follow the guy to the hide out while staying out of his and the PMCs view.

They were all voted game of the year here but if you look elsewhere like Gametrailers Gears of War or Metal Gear Solid 4 didn't take game of the year there but Mario Galaxy did it was GOTY virtually everywhere.

Also Super Mario Galaxy is better than both. I think it was a nice idea to have Mario in space. The gravity idea worked really well ands most of all it was fun. It was easy but thats what made it such an awesome experience.

hah, based on the postings, many people seem to think GeoW or SMG is better than MGS4, but the votes say otherwise, by a large margin. I think this proves that the fanatics are alawys more vocal than the general public. Whatever we see on the forums do not represent the silent majority.

Doesn't really mean anything. Vote results will be different on every site. As for the vote, I didn't play MGS 4 but I wouldn't even consider GeoW to be near the same level as Galaxy.

Metal Gear Solid 4>Super Mario Galaxy>Gears of War 07 and 08 were much better and far more competitive years than 06....Gears 1 winning in 06..isn't as impressive to me as SMG winning in 07 or MGS 4 winning in 08.jg4xchamp
true that. The only other notable game I can remember for 06 are TP, Okami, kingdom hearts 2, and dead rising.

MGS4=SMG, but I'm a big MGS fan, so taking my fanboyism away from that SMG probably deserves it for me, but then not really, it's hypocritical because for me that factor still matters. Hence it's =, which is what I said in the first place. But the real joke is on you, wasting your time reading this drivel. Shame on you, shame on you.

GeoW is starting to feel a bit irrelevant. GeoW 2 is better, and at this point I've lost much of my original love for the game. I'm a bit tired of the gameplay actually of the entire series actually, evne though there's only been two games.

well, yet another xbox360 game people try to pull of as excellent because their was no competition! typical! Not to say 2006 was a awsome year! Gears was the first real next gen game combined with great gameplay and sound! You guy's forget it's an accomplishment itself to have a game like gears back then! There was no competition because gears was ahead of it's time ( in comparison to all the other games ). That's not to say it's the best game this gen! That title belongs to other games that came out later! But i don't think it's fair to say gears won because their where no other very good games back then!

Gears of War had a gritty setting, Super Mario Galaxy proves that you don't need guns and blood for games to be fun, and MGS4 is the physical representative of the marriage between movie and gaming in the high point. I would say that although MGS4 is an achievement in gaming, it will and will continue to split the gaming community. Super Mario Galaxy reinvented the Platforming Genre, is a fun game, and really stood out head and shoulders above the rest of what gaming really is, a fun and addictive hobby that the industry should never forget about. In rankings I would say that it's a close one between MGS4 and Super Mario Galaxy, but I would give the edge to Super Mario Galaxy, because in a industry that is steadily moving towards making games just like movies, Super Mario Galaxy will always remind people that making a game fun is what made the first gamers attracted to the Ataris and the NES.
