@mariokart64fan: Oh ok I didn't get the memo that the devs are the ones who call the shots.

@jcrame10: Oops, Lol :P
I've been thinking that they should bundle the NX with a traditional controller for free of cost with the NX console, hookups, and "gimmicky" controller. They also need to make the traditional controller the primary way to play 3rd party games, and most 1st party games. This will: 1. Relieve 3rd party stress over controllers, 2. Make the gimmicky controller feel optional (relieves gamer stress), and 3. Bring back a little bit of their hardcore audience.
Now I said a little bit of their hardcore audience because Nintendo needs to do a whole lot more to win ALL of them back. However, that's for another thread.
Edit: Do you think that would work? I know they need to market the dang thing like there's no tommorrow as well, but would that fix the controller issue?
How can you even toy with this idea when we have no idea what the NX is, or what it's power levels are? You can't just assume the worst because that's what the loudest voice is saying, when their are plenty of other equality viable sources saying it's more powerful than PS4.5, both sides have as much chance of been right. Let's at least let Nintendo announce the damn thing before telling them to scrap it.
We know Nintendo is aiming for an inexpensive device, which means don't expect the NX to cost more than $249.99.
Nintendo also doesn't expect to sell the console at a loss.
They are literally trying to recapture the OG Wii's success again. The reason why they think they can get away with underpowered hardware is because of "innovation". They tasted that sweet success with the OG Wii and they will bury themselves into the ground trying to recapture lightning in a bottle. They don't realize that the average gamer gives two shits about innovation, because if that were the case then the Wii U, or XB1 with Kinect would have been the #1 platform this gen. Nintendo needs to realize that the OG Wii was a once in a lifetime success. Right product at the right time. Its time for Nintendo to get competitive again and make the next SNES.
@jcrame10: So, you believe that a dramatic number of people (tens of millions?) don't want the console mainly due to the GamePad? No, just no. As for selling more than 800k, that's not enough. The amount of work required to make the Pro Controller the primary one would require a tenfold increase in sales, or even more if hitting $200 results in a loss (remember that the GamePad cost $80 to make at launch and likely costs less now, on top of the fact that all of the hardware in the console required to make the GamePad work cannot be removed.
You also don't understand Smash and especially Kart very well. They are not true system sellers like Splatoon. Their sales are actually strongly tied to the userbase. By your logic, 3DS should at least be over 100 million sales due to having Smash and Kart and being cheap. Lo and and behold, it's barely scraping 60 million with a version of it available for under $100, and its version of Mario Kart sold 10 million less than MKDS. You simply have no idea what you're talking about. Also, that bundle is only "$100 more" if you ignore the fact that it comes with two games. For someone who wants both of those games, it's $20 cheaper in total and gives them a controller that works better in Splatoon and is required for Super Mario Maker if they want to buy that at some point.
@techhog89: grandpas want super mario maker. Gamers want smash.
Smash and kart have always been console based games, sorry there's not a 100 million people who want to play them on a handheld. I sure as hell don't.
You're saying that SMM is a purely blue ocean game. I can't believe what I'm reading. It sounds like you simply think that your preferences apply to the entire market, and as a result any console that satisfies what you want will be a smashing success. Looking at your chosen career path, you may need more time in school. NX will likely put your theories to the test anyway.
Also, you still haven't addressed the issue with the fact that a $200 Wii No-U might not even be profitable. Also, they'd have to sell the controller seperately, which is another problem in and of itself. There are so many things to consider that rebranding Wii U as a new console would have made more sense than dropping the controller, ultimately. The GamePad isn't comparable to Kinect at all.
New Generation as in "NEW PS4" and "NEW Xbox One" Generation?
Cause that's all the Xbox 2 and PS Neo are you know that right? Same Shit just new Tech to handle VR.
@techhog89: you refuse to acknowledge the numbers- 12 million sold and only 800,000 projected. That's more than enough to back up what I'm saying, you just refuse to see it. Whether you like it or not, the Gamepad is a turn off for a lot of people, people who would prefer a standard controller.
Yes, NX, NEO and Scorpio are Gen 9.
NX = Gen 9
NEO = Gen 9
Scorpion = Gen 9
What is the problem with NX?
Neo isn't Gen 9, and NX is on-par with XB1 at best so it's Gen 8-level hardware and can't get any Gen 9 games.
There is a reason the nx was pushed back
How do you push back something that wasn't announced? What is the NX? You seem to know something the rest of us don't. Because from everything I've read, all we know is the code name and that some folks got dev kits. It's not like those are final or anything.
Nah, Kimishima isn't even hiding the fact that they planned to launch it sooner. He pretty much said, "We planned to launch this year but decided against it because it wouldn't have enough games." There's no way that a March launch was their original plan anyway. If 2017 were the plan from the start, Wii U wouldn't have a completely empty year and it would release in November 2017.
Cancelling something before it's even announced to the public what it is based on rumors on what others may be doing?????????
That denial. It's not healthy.
@FreedomFreeLife: NX has also been "confirmed" to be...
Remember, none of this info is coming from Nintendo, it's coming from random people on Twitter and Reddit, who claim to have inside sources. We know NOTHING, I'm not saying that it won't be weaker than X1, but I think it's a bit premature to jump the gun before we have any info on it.
The only people with any reputability at all have said that it's weaker than PS4 (other than the CPU,. but that doesn't matter half as much as the GPU). There's more than enough evidence to say that it won't be anywhere near Neo, and will be a gen behind XB2.
If rumors aren't convincing, here are some facts:
Just from these three things, we can safely say that they're aiming for sub $300 price point while make a profit, and that makes even matching PS4 almost impossible. $250 is more likely, and that makes even matching XB1 a stretch. I've crossed out what has been ruled out 100%, and thus there aren't any major contradictions.
How can you even toy with this idea when we have no idea what the NX is, or what it's power levels are? It was already told it will be weaker than XBOX ONE because NX gamepad costs too much like Wii U
Okay, I know that you're trying to defend this thread, but you made that up. or badly paraphrased something.
Yeah scrapping all they put into the product in R&D at this point is great business sense.
It's called cutting your losses. They aren't going to make that money back anyway, so it's better to not waste moneyb on marketing, manufacturing, and shipping and to just bow out now to minimize the inevitable net loss.
Maybe the reason we don't really know a whole lot about NX is because they can redesign the hardware base at will as long as nothing is rolling off an assembly line.
No, that's not how it works. Chips can't just be redesigned on a whim. It would take a good year or two to revamp the console.
Without even addressing the tremendous amount of assumptions you are making (all of which are based off of "confirmed/verified" rumors...w/e the hell that means) I have to ask one question: what if Nintendo's new gimmick for the NX is a lightning-in-a-bottle scenario similar to the Wii and they dominate with casual sales?
That's fine and dandy, but another thing it'll need is consistent, timely releases of 1st party software. That's probably a more difficult issue for Nintendo to tackle.
Yes, NX, NEO and Scorpio are Gen 9.
No, Neo (and possibly even Scorpio) is a revision of a Gen 8 console. If Neo is Gen 9, then New 3DS is Gen 10 (since DSi would have been Gen 8, making 3DS Gen 9) and Vita is Gen 9, since PSP 2000 had a minor overclock which would make it Gen 8. Thus, if NX is both a console and a handheld, it'll be gens 9 and 11 at the same time.
I think gens are officially dead.
@techhog89: there is no profit issue the reason why they can't sell the wii u any cheaper is cuz of the Gamepad being bundled. If they dropped the Gamepad they could sell it at a lower price
But how much lower? A Pro controller isn't free, so the amount of money that the production cost would be reduced by is equal to the cost of the GamePad minus the cost of the Pro Controller. The Xbox One controller cost around $15 to make at launch, so I'd expect a similar cost for the Pro Controller. Thus, in order to hit $200, the controller must cost around $115 to make. Now, how much does it cost? Well, according to this breakdown, it's $80. Or rather, it was $80 at launch. To be kind to you, we'll say that an additional $5 is saved in shipping. Thus, the profit per unit would drop by $30. That is a lot, and at launch they were already losing money on each unit. Then you have to consider the costs of the revamped marketing, changing the name to match (since the "U" wouldn't really fit anymore), revamping the UI, selling GamePads separately, and going back to patch games to work without the GamePad (some require it to even start, even if you think it wouldn't be necessary). They'd need to basically stop supporting the GamePad for anything beyond off-screen play, Super Mario Maker (which a game for gamer whether you like it or not unless you feel that only casuals played games before PS1) would not be usable on those units, and Splatoon would have been far less interesting (though I know that you don't care since the world revolves around you). You failed to consider so many important factors that it's not even funny. You can't just equate Kinect to the GamePad, since Kinect was never the primary controller. With all of the costs considered, it was probably just more cost effective to start over with a new brand and marketing which hasn't been tainted. And if you still think that dropping the GamePad is easy and Nintendo is stubborn, I have one thing to say to you: Explain the 2DS.

Also don't forget that it is somehow being powered by intel, ARM, and AMD and is both x86 and is not x86.

emgesp: "They [Nintendo] don't realize that the average gamer gives two sh... about innovation, ..."
It is kind-of both funny and tragic the way you say that.
