Xbox 360 – 381,000 (15% y-o-y)
Wii – 319,000 (-31% y-o-y)
PS3 – 267,000 (-3% y-o-y)

http://www.nintendoeverything.com/60934/

he information below comes straight from Wedbush Morgan…

Current generation (PS3, Wii, 360, PSP, DS) software sales were $572 million, $52 million above our estimate, while legacy software sales were $4 million, $6 million below our estimate. Wii software sales were $179 million (down 20% y-o-y), Xbox 360 sales were $170 million (up 8%), and PS3 sales were $141 million (up 24%). DS software sales were $72 million (down 13%), while PSP software sales Entertainment: Software| 3 were $10 million (down 37%).

The increases in sales for the PS3 and Xbox 360 platforms have become the norm, and declines for the other consoles have also become the norm. Over the next year, we expect Wii and DS software sales to continue the negative trend, but anticipate strong sales for Nintendo's 3DS that should spur overall handheld software sales back into positive territory. We expect PS3 software sales to spike when several high profile releases launch in the coming months, and believe that overall PS3 software sales would benefit immensely from a hardware price cut, expected in June.

Under one-fifth of PS3 sales included bundles with Sony's Move controller, suggesting another modest month (we have chosen not to subscribe to peripheral data). Just under three-fifths of Xbox 360 sales included bundles with Microsoft's Kinect peripheral, as Xbox 360 Kinect console bundles again outsold PS3 Move console bundles by almost 5:1. We note that the top selling Kinect software titles easily outsold their Move counterparts

not surprising there. 360 dominates, the wii is sputtering along and the ps3........dead last. sony needs a price cut ASAP. they have to do something to spike the sales. but if they do, you know MS is going to counter. the 360 is in the best position, at least in america (i will throw that in for the cows) :P

If the Wii is sputtering along that makes the other two companies look pathetic :P Down 31% and still not far from the lead behind a console that had a massive hardware revamp in Kinect? The Wii is doing just fine :P

i think the wii will continue to decline in sales, as it doesn't seem to have any more tricks up its sleeve to boost sales again. I don't think releasing a new colour will boost the sales for long, it's already cheap and peripherals are unlikely to do much. I think nintendo will want to boost the nitnendo console interest again by announcing a new console either this year or next for a 2012 release. microsoft as mentioned are in a decent position at the moment, kinect and slim have boosted sales nicely, they just need to show the world where they actually intend on taking kinect. sony need a price drop if they want to boost sales.

The market saturation is hitting them. Nowhere to go but down. I still don't own one, however. That could be +1! Maybe when Skyward Sword/price cut?

I never understood the infatuation some people have with hardware sales. How does it affect you personally if x console sells more then y console? Fanboy bragging rights?:?

The problem is that the Wii and PS3 are going down because everyone that wants one has one and that they dont die like the 360's do. I really wonder how many of those 360 sales are rebuys because the warrenty is done or does not apply to their issue.

I remember somebody bringing that issue up a few years back and the 360 fanboys were in denial about that happening.

Ya, personally I know four friends that had to rebuy a 360 after all of them died at least three times after being repaired my MS each time. My brother himself has went through three 360's and his last one wasnt covered by the warrenty and plus the fact that it ended awhile before it died. I sold him my 360 since I barely used it.

everyone gets the 3 year rrod warranty which was the main problem, so really it's only the last couple of years that early adopters would be rebuying consoles. People rebuying the slim even if their console was fine is a possiblity although i doubt it adds up to too much. Kinect and slim are the biggest contributing factos, just like if sony dropped the price they will get a boost.

Me thinks only reason Wii is not first is cause of Kinect craze.

To tell you the truth, I don't think PS3 can overtake 360 with sales this gen

Calling people stupid because they pick one video game console over the other. Sounds like something I would here in a elementary school.

Japan is cancelling the lead which 360 gets from NPD every month so guess the key to this war is Europe and the rest of the world.

Technically it is damage control since the subject mainly concerns NPD numbers and isn't about the rest of the world. But yes, it is ignorant to think that North America is the only country that matters in the "sales game".

Nothing wrong with personally not liking something. It's just that your comment reminded me of kids saying things like "that console is *insert homosexual term here*" back in middle school.

And trust me, I'm all about the lulz in SW, but what you said wasn't all that funny. :P

not surprising there. 360 dominates, the wii is sputtering along and the ps3........dead last. sony needs a price cut ASAP. they have to do something to spike the sales. but if they do, you know MS is going to counter. the 360 is in the best position, at least in america (i will throw that in for the cows) :P

US + Japan (NPD + Media Create) numbers for January:

360: 397,000

PS3: 485,000

Pretty good numbers.

lol well I am sorry. I don't mean to be like that and believe me I am no fanboy. I hope next gen ALL the consoles please me and I love the 720. I guess I just have a lot of pent up anger at the 360 :P. I think the lack of reliability was completely inexcusible, yet noone seemed to care. IDK if that is fixed or not with the new 360's, I hope so!

Yeah... and considering the PS3 generally sells better in EU (with the sxception of UK) and all the other markets, Looks like PS3 is well on the way to beating 360 for another quarter. I guess 360 tying PS3 for Oct-Dec must have just been a fluke.

US + Japan (NPD + Media Create) numbers for January:

360: 397,000

PS3: 485,000

Pretty good numbers.

very good for the ps3 when you add in world wide numbers. however, not being number 1 in america has got to sting a little bit. on the flipside, 360 is killing it here in the states, but its gotta sting to not be popular in the rest of the world

Indeed they would be--Nintendo's console is the only console this generation to go extended periods of time without pricecuts. Get that Wii does to $100-150, and I believe it'll sell buckets again.

That's not ww numbers, just 2 countries. I'm pretty sure Sony can live with 360 selling better in the US. The sales advantage PS3 has in Japan is, on average, MUCH higher than the sales advantage 360 has in the US, and PS3 leads in most of the other markets as well.

We expect PS3 software sales to spike when several high profile releases launch in the coming months, and believe that overall PS3 software sales would benefit immensely from a hardware price cut, expected in June.

their main focus at the moment is the 3DS, but if a new console isn't announced this year, I think they might have a price cut around christmas.

Christmas is too far away, I predict the Wii momentum is going to hit rock bottom before Christmas hits with the Xbox 360 and PS3 both sweeping the Wii off its feat.

I never understood the infatuation some people have with hardware sales. How does it affect you personally if x console sells more then y console? Fanboy bragging rights?:?

coltsfan4ever
Lemmings had a valid point early on with 360 having such a big lead that 3rd party devs might not support PS3. But now it really doesn't matter. Both have a healthy install base and both systems are selling really well. I don't really understand why 360 is leading NPD right now, PS3 has the better games coming out every month.

I wonder if Nintendo really is going to release a new system this year. It would be interesting to see the 360 continue on with the Kinect and the Sony with the NGP (and PS3), while Nintendo makes a more powerful system that is at least along the same lines as Ps3 and 360. It seems as though the PS3 and 360 are not going to get successors for a bit.

Five years into this gen and all three systems are selling well. I honestly expected lower numbers with the current price points as the PS2/XB/GC were a fraction of the cost at this point. These companies have done an outstanding job at keeping the current userbase happy while catering to new users.

This year? No chance, that would take momentum away from their new handheld. They're probably going to want to separate the two a bit. It's like Microsoft releasing Halo Reach and Gears of War 3 in the same quarter. It's just too much, one or the other might detract from the other. I would predict a new Wii is going to be announced this year at E3, but won't release until Holiday 2012. I wouldn't be surprised if I'm wrong however... but the Wii has been showing its age since its inception, and nowadays, the Wii craze is no more and the fascination with "High Definition" is still very high.

HD will always be around (or something better lol). That is no gimmick, it simple visual clarity that is easy on the eyes. Yeah I dont particularly like my Wii as a system (although its durable and backwards comparible which is awesome), but Zelda, mario and more begged me to buy it :P.

*Insert obligatory NPD=/the world here*

Duckyindiana

Technically it is damage control since the subject mainly concerns NPD numbers and isn't about the rest of the world. But yes, it is ignorant to think that North America is the only country that matters in the "sales game".

And yet we have the same sort of thing with Japan numbers every month don't see you in there saying this sort of thing!

Excuse me, but I have yet to see anyone in a Media Create thread claiming anything about "PS3 beat 360 in Japan 360 is dead". Everyone is aware that these numbers are not representative of the world. Most of the time it's just a showcase of how much we are self righteous about our gaming taste, with a few "LOL PSP-GO" here and there.

Me thinks only reason Wii is not first is cause of Kinect craze.

To tell you the truth, I don't think PS3 can overtake 360 with sales this gen

Kashiwaba

Japan is cancelling the lead which 360 gets from NPD every month so guess the key to this war is Europe and the rest of the world.

Let's look at last year sales in NPD and Media create:

NPD 2010

  • 6,764,089 - 360
  • 4,333,500 - PS3

That's a difference of 2,430,589 units.

Media Create 2010

  • 1,586,122 - PS3
  • 210,826 - 360

That's a difference of 1,375,296 units.

Which comes down to a 1,055,293 unit difference when you minus Media Create from NPD.

In the UK, both the PS3 and 360 sold equally the same; France outsold the 360 by 272,000 units. Don't have any other numbers, which means we're left with a final difference of783,293 units... so, the rest of word would have to have put up quite a large difference in defeating the Xbox 360 last year.

One word Kinect. The casual maket is what drives sales and right now that is centered around Kinect in the USA whether you like it or not. I have no plans to purchase Kinect but it seems like a lot of people are interested in it.

Sony beat 360 for the last 4 qtrs. and tied them for 4th qtr 2010. So it looks like the rest of the world is buying the PS3 over the 360.
