yeah, i wasn't knocking people who want to build one, but a few posters on SW who shall remain nameless make it out to be as easy as tying your shoe, which is just not the case.

rimnet00

While it's not as easy as tying your shoes, it's as easy as putting together a lego set. Except, there are less pieces, and everything only fits in one way. Heck, everything is color coded even. I understand that some people can feel intimidated by the assumption that PCs are hard to build, but I assure you... anyone with a Middle School education can do it.

they never used to be colour coded, well not as much as it is now :O

MBs are mega colourfull.

I actually built my first machine in 8th grade - and that was a while ago before Windows installed all the drivers for you automatically and patched itself to the latest and greatest version.

It really is so easy now that anyone can do it. I've put together IKEA furniture that was more complicated than building a computer.

"In terms of raw processing power, the high-end PCs are at least three times more powerful."Painballz

Well you cant argue with this statement, but consoles are good in thier own way, they are not meant to be the most powerful. Just powerful enough to provide an easy way to play the great games they release on each console.

I think would be absolute nonsense from Nvidia part, to consider real gamers want cutting edge hardware, without many games to even remotly use that harwdare

If 90% of PC games were looking like Crysis, then the investement in "cutting edge" would be wellcome, now there is only that, Crysis, a bit far from ideal reason to waste money on the best hardare if you ask me, when all other games look subpar comparing to that one

And even Crysis is not fully optimised yet for current quad cores etc

As i see it PC is a total huge waste of money and time, i will gladly wait for xbox720, and not upgrade, if the best that appears in years to come remains Crysis, frankly i have not sen a single coming game on PC that looks like it

It's not the putting it together part that is the hardest part, it's the picking the right parts that causes most people trouble. Whenever I piece together a rig it always takes me awhile to make sure I am getting all the right balance of parts etc, and that all specs are matching.

Even if you are on top of things and reading reviews on the latest hardware, there is just so much to consider that it still takes awhile once you sit down and actually start selecting hardware.

I have a quad core, and believe me, that did not make Witcher any bit less HORRIBLE or last gen in graphics, that is my point

lol funny thing actually, I'm not bashing PCs or anything, but when I was building my most recent rig the colors on the mobo were the opposite colors of the cables for the HDD LED and the Power button, I had the HDD LED hooked up to the power button pins for a good week before I figured out why my it wouldn't turn on.

FF7 and 9 were on the PC :P

I'm sure you meant 8. And 7 doesn't run on modern PCs (I know--I've tried).

But what about 10 and 12? Thing is, the PC isn't a big market in Japan (it's actually consoles and cell phones there), so PC development isn't a top priority with Japanese developers.

That said, the PC is king in many other markets, such as Europe and the rest of Asia. And though PC isn't king in North America, it ain't last place, either. It holds it own against just about any other gamin platform on the market.

No one said you had to invest in amazingly high end rigs that blow consoles completely out of the water like a nuclear warhead. I have a fairly modest rig that only cost me 650 bucks (all ammenities included) that can run all the most recent games [including crysis] at competant settings and get graphics higher than consoles.

Actually, the PC market is huge in Japan, its just extremely different from what we see in the western countries. The TYPE of games that are on the PC greatly differ from the shooters that you may find in the west. That does not, however, mean that the PC isn't big in Japan. Not to mention I just ran Final Fantasy 7 on my rig like two weeks ago.

And the only reasons I'm spending more than that is because I'm looking for extra performance and reliability...and not necessarily for gaming. Having a RAID 5 array provides both extra performance and a good level of reliability. And 4GB Dual Channel gives me both speed and headroom.

Now if only that *deleted* Q9450 would show up...

Having a raid setup isn't worth the significant increase in cost. Even with the minimal increase, its still way too much. This is the thing that I don't understand about many people. Why on earth are they spending exhorbant ammounts of money for a negligble increase in performance? I'm able to get a performance equal to consoles for extremely cheap.

Got some real-world numbers? I've been told RAID 5 only stinks in writing. Anyway, it's not like I'm paying exorbitant prices. RAID was free on the mobo (on-board SATA RAID chip); I just needed two more drives--not that expensive, really. Anyway, if it doesn't really work out, I can try again with the drives separated.

I didn't say that RAID 5 stinks, but its not going to make a huge increase on your ingame or otherwise performance. Raid systems are only for techies who are overprotective of their information and want to have sections in various places. Its a lot more expensive than one harddrive. I use one 120 gig harddrive, which doesn't cost much at all. Many people end up buying HDDs that are twice that size ending up costinga bout 300-400 USD a peice.

How the *deleted* did you do it? I couldn't do it without a retro rig with a Voodoo3 installed. And as for PC games in Japan, are we talking mainstream games or...games meant for private consumption, if you get my drift (the market for...private...PC games is big, I'll admit)?

I was running the game in compatibility mode as the admin. I was talking more along the private market in Japan. There are TONS of story games [different kind of adventure titles], fighters, etc.

I just bought two 320s to go with the 320 I already have. They were $75 a piece.

PS. I need the space. The main reason I'm going quad is because I plan to do multimedia work--space-hungry and MT-friendly. But since you mention it doesn't make for that good a time, I'll probably go RAID 0 instead.

I'm able to do all my multimedia work (sound production, video production, writing, photography, and otherwise) on one 120gig HDD with games installed. Consider yourself lucky for finding 320gig harddrives for 76$. The lowest I've been able to find is 130 dollars from the cheapest website on the internet.

Closed market, mostly. That's why we don't hear a lot about it. Okay. But it's funny the big boys don't jump into the PC market that often if there are plenty of Japanese PC users. Wonder why is that? I think we both agree, though, that outside of Japan PC is almost always king.

It has more to do with the culture than it has to do with market trends or anything like that. Companies in Japan have this unspoken bond (forgot the japanese word for it) that don't allow them to do business with certain people or otherwise. Someone from Japan may know what this custom is called.

Let's just call it "bad form" and leave it at that. Still, I think the shell's cracking a bit. I know those with hands in the arcade market (still strong in the East) have no choice: your modern arcade rig is essentially a PC (that's probably why Capcom still does PC games--they needed a PC team to do SF4). But...custom's hard to break. And I'm sure Sony, Nintendo, and the like would like to keep them (and their money) on the consoles.
